The fastest test is activation. A minute repeater sounds only when the wearer slides or presses its control, and it then announces the hours, quarter-hours and the minutes since the last quarter. A sonnerie strikes on its own as time passes, following a fixed schedule while its striking mode is active. Some watches have both, so the question to ask is which function a given complication performs, not which of the two words the watch carries.
Activation: on demand versus automatic
The distinction that matters most is who starts the sound. A minute repeater is an on-demand complication. The wearer activates it, and it then strikes the time in a fixed sequence. A sonnerie is an automatic striking complication. It sounds at set moments without any action from the wearer, so it works like a bell tower that rings through the day.
This difference determines how each one is used. A minute repeater is a way of reading the time in the dark or without looking at the dial. A sonnerie is a way of hearing the time pass while you go about your day, and most sonnerie watches let you silence the striking.
How a minute repeater encodes the time
Patek Philippe describes a minute repeater as striking a low-pitched note for each hour, a double high-low tone for each quarter, and a high-pitched note for each minute that has elapsed since the last quarter. Audemars Piguet’s official overview describes the same three layers: hours, quarters and minutes, struck on demand.

Patek Philippe’s operating instructions for the 6301P, published around 2020, show how this works on one movement. The sequence runs in order: the hours first, then the quarter sequences, then the remaining minutes. Its worked example is 12:59, which produces:
| Element at 12:59 | Strikes | Pitch and form |
|---|---|---|
| Hours | 12 | Low-pitched |
| Quarters | Three quarter sequences | Double high-low tone per quarter |
| Minutes since 12:45 | 14 | High-pitched |
| Total | 35 |
Read this as the example the manual uses for that mechanism. It is not a universal acoustic standard, and other makers and calibres can sequence their strikes differently.
Audemars Piguet’s overview adds a structural detail: its minute repeater is mechanically programmed for 720 sequences, one for each minute of the 12-hour display. That figure comes from a current, undated overview page and describes that maker’s construction, not the minute repeater as a whole.

What a sonnerie does
A sonnerie is the automatic counterpart. Two common patterns are called grande and petite sonnerie, and the names describe how much the watch strikes, not whether it is a minute repeater.
Grande sonnerie
According to the 6301P instructions, grande sonnerie mode sounds the hour and the quarter-hours automatically. At each quarter, the watch strikes the hour and then the quarter count. The result is a full, bell-like announcement that repeats the hour four times an hour.
Petite sonnerie
Petite sonnerie reduces the strikes. The hour sounds on the hour, and at each quarter the watch sounds the quarter count without repeating the hour. This makes it less intrusive than grande sonnerie, which is why it suits quieter daily wear.

The same manual also describes a silence mode for the striking. Controls, mode selection and power requirements differ between models, so check the operating instructions for your specific watch before relying on any particular behaviour.
Can one watch have both?
Yes. Patek Philippe describes its grande and petite sonneries as also equipped with a minute repeater mechanism. The two functions then work independently: the sonnerie strikes automatically according to its mode, while the minute repeater sounds only when the wearer requests it.

Audemars Piguet’s archive-based statement covers its production from 1882 to 1892, when more than half of the 1,625 chiming watches, pendants and pocket watches it made in that period were in the chiming category. The figure shows how common striking complications were in that brand’s output then. It does not define either mechanism.
Blancpain’s Lettres du Brassus article makes the same practical distinction from a specialist angle: a grande sonnerie sounds the time as it passes, while a minute repeater waits for the wearer to ask for it.

How to identify which function a watch has
- Read the complication list in the maker’s specifications or the operating instructions for the exact reference.
- Look for the word “minute repeater” and whether it is described as on-demand.
- Look for “grande sonnerie” or “petite sonnerie” and whether the watch strikes automatically.
- If both appear, note which control activates the repeater and which mode, if any, controls the automatic striking.
- Check the instructions for any silence mode, so you know how to stop automatic striking before wearing the watch somewhere quiet.
When a listing uses only one term, treat the other function as unconfirmed until the maker’s documentation for that model says otherwise.
The short version: a minute repeater is something you ask for, and a sonnerie is something the watch does on its own. Grande and petite describe how much the automatic striking announces, and a single watch can carry both.
