Short answer: A moon-phase watch is not automatically suitable for water, and its running time and upkeep depend on the exact case, movement and manufacturer schedule. Read the water-resistance marking together with the model’s manual, keep crowns and pushers closed, and never adjust calendar or lunar indications during the hours the maker forbids. Published reserves range from about 38 to 90 hours, while official complete-service prices in 2026 examples run from $210 to $990 for contemporary mechanical watches, with rare vintage references listed much higher. The sections below explain how to use, set and budget for one without damaging its movement.
Can I swim or shower with a moon-phase watch?
Only if the watch’s own water-resistance rating and manual allow it. “Moon phase” describes a calendar complication; it is not a water-resistance class. The case construction, crown and pusher seals, crystal and pressure testing determine what the watch can tolerate.

Ratings are commonly shown in metres or ATM (atmospheres), but manufacturers can define the same number differently. Victorinox’s published guidance maps 50 m/5 ATM to showering or shallow swimming, 100 m/10 ATM to swimming or snorkeling, 200 m/20 ATM to scuba diving, and 500 m/50 ATM to serious deep-water diving. The Carl F. Bucherer Manero Moonphase manual is more conservative: 3 ATM covers sweat, accidental drops and rain; 5 ATM covers bathing, showering and swimming; 10 ATM covers swimming and snorkeling; 20 ATM covers swimming, snorkeling and diving; and 30 ATM is specified for deep-sea diving.
| Example rating or guidance | Use stated by the manufacturer | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 3 ATM | Sweat, drops and rain | Carl F. Bucherer Manero Moonphase manual; not a swimming rating |
| 5 ATM / 50 m | Bathing, showering and swimming in the Manero manual; showering or shallow swimming in Victorinox guidance | Definitions differ by brand and model |
| 10 ATM / 100 m | Swimming and snorkeling | Victorinox and Carl F. Bucherer examples |
| 20 ATM / 200 m | Swimming, snorkeling and diving | Victorinox maps this to scuba diving |
| 30 ATM | Deep-sea diving | Carl F. Bucherer Manero Moonphase manual |
| 50 ATM / 500 m | Serious deep-water diving | Victorinox guidance |
These examples are not interchangeable certification. Before entering water, find the exact rating on the case back or paperwork and follow that model’s instructions. If the manual is missing, an authorized service center can identify the reference and its permitted use.

Why a previously water-resistant watch can leak
Victorinox warns that resistance can weaken as gaskets age, crowns or pushers are knocked, or temperatures change, and states that resistance cannot be guaranteed indefinitely. Keep every crown and pusher fully closed; never operate one underwater or while it is wet. A pressure rating also assumes the case is intact. A hard impact, opened case back or deteriorated seal can invalidate the original test.
Panerai recommends renewing water resistance every two years with regular servicing, or every year for underwater sports, replacing seals during that process. Chanel advises a yearly check after prolonged exposure to salt water or chlorine. Rinse a watch only when its manual permits it, dry it with a soft cloth, and have condensation inside the crystal checked promptly: moisture can corrode the movement even when the watch still runs.

The answer is the movement’s stated power reserve, not the presence of the lunar display. Automatic calibers wind from wrist motion; hand-wound calibers store energy from the crown. Published examples span roughly 38 to 90 hours, depending on caliber and model.
Automatic moon-phase watches
Victorinox says its automatic models provide 38–48 hours of reserve, depending on model, and recommends wearing one for 8–10 hours a day to fully wind it. Chanel publishes 38–70 hours for its automatic models, again varying by model. A watch that is removed before its mainspring is sufficiently wound may stop sooner than the headline figure.
If an automatic watch has stopped, Maurice Lacroix recommends at least 30 turns of the crown before wearing it. Use the winding direction and crown position specified for that reference; some movements wind in both directions, while others can be damaged by forcing a crown that is still screwed down. Once started, normal wrist motion supplies additional winding, but it does not make the reserve infinite.

Hand-wound moon-phase watches
Hand-wound models require regular crown winding. Baume & Mercier lists approximately 40–90 hours for its hand-wound watches, depending on model. Wind at the interval in the manual, stopping when you feel firm resistance; do not force the crown to chase a theoretical maximum.

Do you need a watch winder?
No. A winder is optional, not a requirement for an automatic moon-phase watch. Maurice Lacroix says owners who do not wear an automatic regularly may consider one, but manually winding the watch when needed is also valid. A winder can keep the hands and lunar display running, yet it also adds continuous rotor motion and electricity use. If you choose one, set the turns-per-day and rotation direction to the movement maker’s specification rather than using a generic maximum.
Letting an automatic watch stop does not by itself damage it; the practical cost is resetting the time, date and moon display. If a fully wound watch repeatedly stops far earlier than its published reserve, have an authorized center check winding efficiency and amplitude instead of compensating with a faster winder.
How do I set the moon phase without damaging the movement?
Use the model’s manual exactly. Moon-phase mechanisms are calendar complications with different quick-set designs and danger periods. Audemars Piguet instructs owners to “Avoid adjusting the time or correcting the day, date, month or lunar phases in the afternoon or evening.” The safe hours and permitted crown or pusher positions can differ on another caliber.
- Identify the reference and caliber. Use the case-back reference, warranty card or the manufacturer’s support page to obtain the correct user guide. Patek Philippe directs owners to its user guides for detailed setting instructions.
- Read the restricted-time window. Do not assume a generic “10 p.m. to 2 a.m.” rule applies. Follow the hours printed for that movement, and move the hands outside the restricted period before using any quick-set function.
- Wind or start the watch first. If it has stopped, wind it as directed so you can distinguish a setting problem from insufficient power reserve.
- Set the time, date and calendar indications in the specified order. Some manuals require advancing the hands past midnight or using a corrector; others prohibit a quick-set while the calendar is engaged.
- Advance the lunar display slowly. Use only the assigned corrector or crown position, one click at a time. Never press a corrector with a sharp object or force it when resistance changes.
- Close and secure the crown. Screw-down crowns must be fully screwed in before water exposure. If a pusher feels stuck, stop and have the watch inspected.
The moon disc normally represents the lunar age rather than the astronomical phase to the minute. A small visual offset is normal, but a display that jumps, slips or cannot be corrected within the manual’s procedure indicates a service issue.

How often does a moon-phase watch need servicing?
There is no single industry interval. Brands set schedules according to movement design, seal requirements and expected use, so treat the following as published policies rather than a guarantee for every moon-phase caliber.
| Manufacturer guidance | Interval or action | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| Victorinox | Maintenance every 18–24 months; complete overhaul every 4–6 years | Routine maintenance and a separate full overhaul schedule |
| Panerai | Water-resistance renewal every 2 years; annually for underwater sports | Includes seal replacement during the renewal |
| Chanel | Movement and water-resistance service every 5 years | Yearly check after prolonged saltwater or chlorine exposure |
| Baume & Mercier | Complete service every 3–5 years; 5–7 years for Baumatic movements | Movement-specific recommendation |
| Patek Philippe | Official servicing every 8–10 years | Brand-wide recommendation; the reference manual still governs settings |
Shorten the interval when the watch sees salt water, chlorine, frequent temperature changes, shocks or heavy daily wear. A water-resistance check is not the same as a complete overhaul: the former tests the case and seals, while the latter generally includes disassembly, cleaning, lubrication, regulation and replacement of worn parts.
Signs to book service sooner
- Condensation or a foggy crystal after a temperature change.
- A crown or pusher that feels gritty, loose or difficult to operate.
- A sudden loss of reserve, erratic rate or repeated stopping.
- A moon disc, date or other calendar indication that fails to advance or slips.
- Visible damage to the crystal, case, crown or case back.
Use an authorized center when the watch is under warranty, has a complicated or vintage caliber, or needs replacement parts. Ask whether the estimate includes pressure testing, gaskets, refinishing, shipping, tax and replacement of damaged components.
How much does it cost to maintain a moon-phase watch?
Official price pages show a wide spread, and a moon-phase service may be classified as a complication rather than a basic three-hand job. The figures below are 2026 published benchmarks, not guaranteed quotes.

Longines states that its prices exclude tax and shipping. Frederique Constant notes that country, exchange rate and local tax can change the final amount. Rolex says the cost depends on the type of servicing required and the watch’s condition; its vintage Moonphase figure is a listed reference price, not a universal vintage-watch quote. Parts, restoration, polishing, damaged-module replacement and expedited shipping can all increase an estimate.

How to budget before sending the watch
- Record the exact reference, movement and production period.
- Ask for separate prices for routine maintenance, complete service and water-resistance renewal.
- Confirm whether seals, crystal, crown, correctors and worn calendar parts are included.
- Check currency, tax, shipping, warranty on the repair and the center’s authorization status.
- Request approval before work that exceeds the initial estimate.
What should I compare when buying a moon-phase watch?
Compare the ownership requirements, not just the appearance of the lunar disc. Two watches with similar displays can have very different sealing, reserve and service costs.
| Decision point | Why it matters | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Water resistance and crown design | Determines whether daily splashes, swimming or diving are permitted | Exact ATM/metre rating, screw-down crown, pusher restrictions and manual wording |
| Automatic versus hand-wound movement | Changes how the watch is restarted and maintained between wears | Winding instructions and stated reserve |
| Power reserve | Controls how long the watch runs off the wrist | Manufacturer’s range for the exact caliber |
| Lunar-phase quick-set rules | Incorrect timing can damage calendar components | Restricted hours, corrector locations and setting sequence |
| Water-resistance test interval | Seals age even when the movement is accurate | Brand schedule and sport-specific recommendation |
| Complete-service interval and price | Sets long-term ownership cost | Published currency, inclusions and exclusions |
| Authorized service access | Complicated or vintage parts may not be available everywhere | Local center, shipping route, warranty and estimate policy |
A watch intended for swimming needs a documented rating and a realistic seal-check plan. A dress watch kept dry may prioritize a longer reserve or a thinner case, while a vintage moon-phase watch requires extra budget for condition-dependent restoration.
What should I do if the watch stops, leaks or shows the wrong moon?
If it stops after sitting unused
Follow the manual’s winding procedure; Maurice Lacroix’s general guidance is at least 30 crown turns for a stopped automatic. Reset the time and lunar display only during the permitted window. If it stops again soon after a full wind, arrange an inspection rather than repeatedly forcing the correctors.

If water gets inside
Do not operate the crown, press the pushers or place the watch on a radiator. Remove it from further exposure and contact an authorized center promptly for drying, seal replacement and pressure testing. Corrosion risk rises with salt or chlorine contamination.
If the lunar indication is wrong
A small phase offset can be normal, but a disc that skips, stalls or cannot be corrected by the prescribed procedure is not a setting challenge to solve by force. Stop adjusting and provide the service center with the reference, the time the fault appeared and any recent impact or water exposure.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a moon-phase display need resetting every month?
No. The display is designed to track the lunar cycle and normally needs correction only when the watch has stopped long enough to lose its calendar indication or after an incorrect setting. The exact correction method and permitted hours are movement-specific.
Can I wear a moon-phase watch in a hot tub?
Do not assume a swimming rating covers a hot tub. Heat and rapid temperature changes can stress seals, and detergents or chemicals may attack them; use the manufacturer’s manual or keep the watch out of the water.
Why does my automatic moon-phase watch stop overnight?
A short night alone should not exhaust a fully wound movement, but limited wrist motion, an incomplete wind or a worn mainspring can reduce reserve. Compare the elapsed time with the maker’s stated range and seek service if the short run repeats.
Is a moon-phase complication more expensive to service than a date watch?
Often, because the lunar module adds parts and adjustment work, but the classification and price are set by each service center. Request a reference-specific estimate rather than assuming a universal complication surcharge.
