A 25-year ownership account only works if it is about the watch actually owned: when it was bought, how it was worn, what service it received, and what changed over time. Those personal details are not established here, so I can’t truthfully claim a purchase story, service history, accuracy record, or daily-wear experience. What can be established is the 145.012’s identity and historical context—and what a prospective owner should verify before treating any example as representative.
What the Omega Speedmaster 145.012 is
The Omega Speedmaster reference 145.012 is a late-1960s, hand-wound chronograph associated with the calibre 321. Auction catalogues describe individual examples with a stainless-steel case and a 17-jewel movement; Sotheby’s describes a 42 mm example with a screw-down caseback. These are details of catalogued watches, not a guarantee that every surviving 145.012 has identical dimensions, components, or condition. When it was made
Published production dates are approximate rather than perfectly aligned. Christie’s places the reference around 1967–1969; Fratello’s 2019 buyer’s guide says it was produced in 1967 and 1968, with some later deliveries. Taken together, those accounts support a late-1960s origin, not one exact production window for every watch. What its Apollo connection does—and does not—mean
Omega’s customer-service FAQ identifies ST 145.012 among the Speedmaster references worn on Apollo 11, 12, 14, 15, 16, and 17, alongside ST 105.012. That establishes a connection between the reference and those missions; it does not establish that every 145.012 flew, or that a particular watch has spaceflight provenance. What a 25-year ownership story needs to establish
The reference history cannot fill in the owner’s personal record. A credible account of a quarter-century with one watch should distinguish documented facts from recollection and avoid borrowing characteristics from other 145.012 examples. The relevant record includes:
- When and how the watch was acquired, and whether its identity and condition were checked at the time.
- Service dates, receipts, repairs, and any known replacement parts.
- Wear frequency and conditions, plus any accuracy observations that were actually recorded.
- What has changed over the years: condition, use, ownership priorities, or understanding of the watch.
Without those particulars, claims that this watch was dependable, worn daily, kept original, or serviced in a particular way would be invention. The most useful account is transparent about what the owner knows and what the records support.

How to investigate a specific 145.012
Start with the watch in front of you, not with the reference’s reputation. Omega says vintage serial numbers are usually engraved inside the caseback and on the movement, and that an authorised service centre can help retrieve information. A serial number is a research lead, not by itself proof that every component is original or that the watch is authentic. Omega’s guidance on vintage serial numbers
- Compare the reference and movement information with the watch and its records.
- Have the dial, hands, bezel, case, and movement assessed together; age-appropriate appearance alone does not establish originality.
- Review service documentation and provenance separately. A documented history can add context, but do not assume it verifies details it does not explicitly cover.
- When comparing another vintage Speedmaster, weigh reference and movement, component originality, provenance, service state, and completeness of records rather than relying on the Apollo association alone.

What the reference’s reputation cannot tell you
The 145.012 has a well-documented place in the late-1960s Speedmaster family and an Omega-identified connection to several Apollo missions. Neither fact predicts the condition, service needs, originality, or value of an individual watch. The 2019 market discussion in Fratello’s guide is historical commentary, not current valuation guidance; the cited material does not establish a current price or rank 145.012 variants by value.
