Meta and Oakley’s action-focused smart glasses are the Oakley Meta Vanguard: sports sunglasses with a camera, open-ear audio, Meta AI and Garmin/Strava features. They are not augmented-reality glasses—there is no display for maps or workout stats. The U.S. launch price was $499, and the product was announced on September 17, 2025, with launch planned for October 21, 2025. Meta’s announcement has the original date and pricing.
What the Vanguard is—and what it isn’t
The Vanguard pairs Oakley’s wraparound sports-sunglass design with Meta’s camera, audio, AI and companion-app platform. It is intended for activities such as running, cycling, skiing and hiking, when reaching for a phone or separate camera is awkward. A centered camera captures a first-person view; speakers let you hear audio and voice responses while keeping your ears open.
“Smart glasses” does not mean a visual overlay here. The Vanguard has no screen in the lenses: it cannot show a route, pace, message or other data in your field of view. It is also not a self-contained sports computer. Setup and the full connected experience rely on a compatible smartphone, Meta AI app, Meta account and internet connection. Oakley’s product details and requirements are listed on its Vanguard product page.
The model was announced September 17, 2025, with an October 21, 2025 planned launch. The $499 price was the U.S. launch price; current pricing, stock and regional availability should be checked with Oakley.

What the camera and action button can do
Oakley lists a centered ultra-wide 12MP camera, still-photo capture and video up to 3K. Available modes include slow motion and hyperlapse; detailed listed video modes include 720p at 120 frames per second and approximately 2203 × 2938 at 30 fps. Stills are listed at 3024 × 4032 pixels. A physical action button provides a way to trigger capture and configured shortcuts without relying on voice.
The glasses have 32GB of flash storage. Oakley estimates capacity at more than 500 photos or more than 100 30-second videos, depending on recording settings. Higher-resolution video and longer clips use storage more quickly. The detailed Oakley listing includes the camera, storage, audio and connectivity specifications.
“3K” describes a capture mode, not interchangeable-lens or professional action-camera quality. The camera is fixed to the frame, so you cannot reframe a clip after recording. A wide POV can emphasize head movement and distort the edges. Independent reviewer Android Central has noted practical concerns including low-light quality, portrait-oriented sharing and variable battery life; those are reviewer observations, not a guarantee of how every clip will look.

Where hands-free POV makes sense
- Short clips from trail rides, cycling descents, skiing, hiking or climbing.
- Running footage or quick memories when holding a phone would interfere with the activity.
- Social clips where recording from the wearer’s viewpoint matters more than precise camera control.
- Photos or videos that can be paired with supported workout information for sharing.
When a dedicated action camera is the better tool
A GoPro-class camera is the stronger choice when recording endurance, stabilization, mounting options, replaceable batteries or manual control matter more than immediacy. The glasses cannot be repositioned independently of the wearer’s head, and they are not a substitute for a camera designed for long sessions or professional framing. See Cyclingnews’ action-camera overview for the separate category.

When accounts and compatible devices are connected, the intended benefit is spoken access to supported workout context and the ability to add selected performance information or Strava-branded overlays to compatible media. Garmin integration draws on data from compatible Garmin devices; Strava is relevant to activity history, sharing and post-activity presentation. Neither integration turns the glasses into a live heads-up display or a replacement for a bike computer.
- Pair the glasses with a compatible phone in the Meta AI app.
- Connect the relevant Garmin device and/or Strava account, following the current app prompts.
- Record the activity in the supported fitness ecosystem.
- Ask Meta AI for supported workout information, such as pace or progress, where available.
- Capture media and choose compatible performance overlays or sharing options.
Feature availability can vary by country, language, device, app version and account configuration. A compatible Garmin device is separate hardware. If workout answers do not appear, check device compatibility, activity recording, account connection, Bluetooth, location permissions and internet access; update the apps and reconnect the integration before treating the camera itself as faulty. Exact app menus may change.

Meta AI, audio and technical specifications
Meta AI can support voice-controlled capture, answer questions about what the wearer sees, and speak through the open-ear speakers. Connected media management and activity-related summaries may also be available, depending on software and region. Oakley lists full voice-command support in English, French, Spanish and Italian; check local availability. AI relies on connected services and should not be treated as medical, navigation or safety-critical advice.
| Feature | Oakley Meta Vanguard |
|---|---|
| Camera | Centered ultra-wide 12MP |
| Video | Advertised up to 3K; listed modes include 30 fps and 120-fps slow motion |
| Storage | 32GB; capacity varies with settings |
| Audio and microphones | Two open-ear speakers; five-microphone array |
| Wireless | Bluetooth 5.3; Wi-Fi 6E listed by Oakley |
| Battery | Up to 9 hours of moderate use; up to 6 hours of continuous audio or voice calling |
| Charging case | Up to 36 additional hours, per Oakley |
| Full charge | Approximately 75 minutes, per Oakley |
| Phone compatibility | iOS 14.4 or later, or Android 10 or later, subject to supported-device lists |
| Dust and water rating | IP67, as stated in Oakley’s product-family material |
| Visual display | None |
Battery numbers are manufacturer “up to” estimates, not promises of action-camera runtime. The nine-hour figure is for moderate use; continuous audio or calls are rated up to six hours, and Oakley lists up to 36 additional hours from the case. Continuous high-resolution recording, AI use, auto-capture, wireless activity, high volume and cold conditions can reduce endurance. Do not assume the glasses will last through an all-day recording session.
Setup and practical checks
- Check that your phone meets Oakley’s published minimum operating-system requirements and appears on the supported-device list.
- Install the Meta AI app, sign in to or create a Meta account, and charge the glasses and case.
- Pair the glasses through the app and install any offered firmware updates.
- Review camera, microphone, Bluetooth, location and fitness permissions; enable only what you need for the features you intend to use.
- Configure voice commands, capture behavior, privacy settings and sharing destinations, then connect Garmin or Strava if needed.
- Before a long outing, test a short photo, video, audio playback and AI interaction. Check battery and storage first.
If a recording will not start
- Check charge and available storage; transfer or delete older media if necessary.
- Confirm the glasses are connected to the phone and Meta AI app, then try the physical capture button instead of voice.
- Check that the camera’s privacy indicator functions and that the camera, microphones and status light are unobstructed.
- Try a lower video resolution or disable automatic capture to reduce storage and power demands.
- Restart the glasses and app, then retry.
Fit, lenses, durability and privacy
The sport-oriented shield frame is designed to stay secure during movement and work with helmets, but fit is individual: head shape, nose fit, helmet clearance and temple pressure all matter. Oakley’s catalog shows Prizm options for different light conditions, including road, black and 24K variants, as well as other lens configurations where offered. Availability differs by market; do not assume every lens can be made prescription-ready. Check the specific configuration with Oakley or an authorized optical provider. The Oakley Meta collection shows product-family positioning.

Oakley lists an IP67 rating, but that is not permission to swim in the glasses, use high-pressure water or ignore charging and temperature limits. Follow the Vanguard safety and warranty guide for handling restrictions.
The visible recording indicator is part of the product’s social-consent design, not a substitute for permission or compliance with local law. Avoid recording in bathrooms, locker rooms, medical settings, private residences or restricted facilities. Audio recording may be subject to additional consent rules; check local law, particularly where all parties’ consent may be required. Fitness histories and overlays can expose routes, locations and timing, so review sharing defaults before posting to Strava or another platform.

Who should buy the Oakley Meta Vanguard?
It makes sense if
- You value quick first-person clips more than the highest image quality or extensive camera controls.
- You regularly run, cycle, ski or take part in other outdoor activities and want audio without covering your ears.
- You already use compatible Garmin devices or Strava and will make use of supported workout context or overlays.
- You are comfortable with a phone, Meta account, app and cloud-connected AI as part of the experience.
Look elsewhere if
- You expect maps, pace or notifications to appear in your vision; there is no display.
- You need long continuous video, dependable low-light footage, professional stabilization or extensive camera controls.
- You already have a capable action camera and do not need glasses-based capture.
- You want lightweight, ordinary-looking sunglasses, or do not want a face-worn camera, microphone, Meta account or cloud AI.
- You need a dedicated device for workout metrics, navigation or cycling safety; a Garmin watch or bike computer remains the more appropriate tool. See Garmin’s product ecosystem and its cycling range.
If you want audio while keeping your sunglasses, open-ear headphones such as those from Shokz avoid paying for the Vanguard’s camera and AI. If the recording setup is your priority, compare dedicated cameras such as GoPro.
