The Omega Seamaster Professional 300M 2254.50 and 2531.80 share the core specifications that matter on paper: both have 41 mm steel cases, the automatic Omega 1120 movement, a 44-hour power reserve and a published water-resistance rating of 300 metres. The choice is mainly about the black or blue dial, their different design details and bracelet feel, and whether the 2531.80’s James Bond association appeals to you. Neither is a technical winner based on the listed specifications alone.

The specifications above come from Omega’s reference-specific pages, one regional Hong Kong listing and one Japanese listing. Omega labels the 2254.50 no longer available and the 2531.80 discontinued; neither page establishes current stock or a current market price. The different movement wording—“self-winding” and “automatic”—does not indicate a movement contest: both pages identify calibre 1120.
What differs in everyday wear
Dial and overall look
The 2254.50 has a black dial; the 2531.80 has a blue dial. Both are 41 mm, so the main visual distinction is not case size but the color and the way each reference presents the Seamaster 300M design. If you want the less conspicuous dial, black may suit your taste; if you prefer the blue associated with this Seamaster reference, the 2531.80 is the obvious direction. Those are style preferences, not differences in published performance.
Hands, markers and legibility
Fratello’s head-to-head comparison treats handset legibility and marker treatment as meaningful points of contrast, alongside the overall design. Those assessments are useful for deciding what looks clearer or more appealing to you, but they are the writers’ judgments rather than a measured finding that one watch is universally easier to read.

Bracelet feel and design
The Omega listings describe steel bracelets on both watches, each with a diver extension. Fratello also compares bracelet styling and taper, which can affect how the watches look and feel on the wrist. If bracelet comfort is decisive, try the actual example on where possible: the listings do not provide a direct, comparable measurement of bracelet fit. Omega lists a 20 mm lug width for the 2531.80; the reviewed 2254.50 page does not state one, so do not assume strap or accessory compatibility from that comparison alone.
The Bond connection
The 2531.80 is associated with James Bond, a point that features in Fratello’s comparison. That connection can add personal or collector appeal, but it does not change the shared movement, case diameter or published water-resistance rating. Choose it for the association if it matters to you, not as evidence of technical superiority.

Movement, water resistance and the limits of the specifications
Omega lists both references with calibre 1120 and a 44-hour power reserve. Based on those published figures, there is no specification-based reason to choose one over the other for movement or reserve.
Both Omega pages give a rating of 30 bar / 300 m / 1,000 ft. That is the model’s published specification, not a guarantee that a decades-old individual watch remains watertight. Before taking a pre-owned example into water, have that specific watch inspected and pressure-tested by a qualified watchmaker. Its present condition and test result matter more than the original rating.

- Model 212.30.44.52.01.001
Omega describes the 2254.50’s unidirectional bezel as useful for divers because it cannot be accidentally rotated in a direction that causes dive time to be miscalculated. The manufacturer’s explanation is on the 2254.50 product page; it describes the bezel’s purpose, not a test of either pre-owned watch.
Which one should you choose?
- Choose the 2254.50 if you prefer a black dial and favor its design details and bracelet styling after comparing the actual watches.
- Choose the 2531.80 if you want a blue dial or value its James Bond association, and you prefer its look and bracelet on your wrist.
- Let condition decide if you are open to either. These are discontinued references, so the specific watch’s authenticity, service history, running condition and bracelet completeness can outweigh a small aesthetic preference.
There is no sourced current-price comparison here, so no reliable price threshold separates the two. Compare actual listings in your market and evaluate each watch individually rather than treating either reference as a guaranteed bargain or investment.

- Confirm the reference and consistency. Check the watch’s reference markings and compare the dial, hands and bracelet with the claimed configuration. Ask for clear photographs and supporting documentation where available.
- Assess the seller and transaction terms. Review the seller’s reputation, written return terms and any authentication protections before payment.
- Inspect completeness and service records. Ask about service paperwork and whether the bracelet has its full complement of links. Missing links can affect fit and may complicate sourcing a suitable replacement.
- Check function and water resistance. Request information about current running condition and recent service. Have the actual watch inspected and pressure-tested before water use; an original 300 m rating does not establish its present sealing condition.
- Compare the total proposition. Consider the watch’s condition, documentation, bracelet fit and seller protections together with the asking price. No single reference is the better buy irrespective of the example.
