The Omega Speedmaster ’57 is a compelling alternative to the Moonwatch if you want a smaller stated case, a date, and a different chronograph display while keeping a hand-wound Omega chronograph. Choose the Moonwatch instead if its NASA qualification and Apollo history are central to why you want a Speedmaster. Neither is a universal upgrade over the other: the right choice depends on which differences matter to you.
How the cited references compare
Specifications vary across versions, so this comparison uses two specific references: the Speedmaster ’57 332.10.41.51.10.001 listed by OMEGA Japan and the Moonwatch Professional 310.32.42.50.04.001 covered by an OMEGA manual. The latter is a rubber-strap version; Moonwatch configurations differ.
| Specification | Speedmaster ’57 332.10.41.51.10.001 |
Moonwatch Professional 310.32.42.50.04.001 |
|---|---|---|
| Case diameter | 40.5 mm | 42 mm |
| Other stated dimensions | 49.64 mm lug-to-lug; 12.99 mm thick | Not stated in the cited manual |
| Movement and winding | Calibre 9906; hand-wound | Calibre 3861; hand-wound |
| Power reserve | 60 hours | 50 hours |
| Date | Yes | Not listed among the manual’s functions |
| Chronograph display | Small seconds; combined 12-hour/60-minute counter | Chronograph; tachymeter |
| Crystal | Sapphire | Not stated in the cited manual |
| Water resistance | 50 m | 50 m |
| Source | OMEGA Japan product listing, accessed 2026 | OMEGA user manual, accessed 2026 |
In these references, the ’57 is 1.5 mm smaller in stated diameter and has 10 additional stated hours of power reserve. Those numbers alone do not predict wrist fit: lug shape, strap or bracelet, wrist shape, and personal preference all affect how a watch wears.
Case size and wrist fit
The ’57’s listed 40.5 mm diameter, 49.64 mm lug-to-lug length, and 12.99 mm thickness give a buyer more dimensions to assess than diameter alone. The cited Moonwatch is 42 mm across, but the manual does not provide comparable lug-to-lug or thickness figures. Try the exact references on where possible, especially if you are choosing between a bracelet and a strap; do not assume a 1.5 mm diameter difference translates into a fixed difference in comfort or presence.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Movement, winding, and daily display
Both are hand-wound chronographs
Neither of these watches is automatic. Both require manual winding, and both have a listed 50 m water-resistance rating. That shared rating is not a reason to treat the ’57 as the more capable swimming watch.
The ’57 adds a date and a different counter layout
The cited ’57 includes a date window, small seconds, and a combined 12-hour/60-minute chronograph counter. Its 60-hour reserve is 10 hours longer than the cited Moonwatch’s 50-hour reserve. The Moonwatch manual lists a chronograph and tachymeter and does not list a date function. If you use the date often, that difference may matter more than the movement names; if you prefer the Moonwatch’s familiar layout, the ’57’s extra display is not automatically a benefit.

Heritage: 1957 design roots or Apollo history?
What the ’57 represents
OMEGA dates the original Speedmaster to 1957. The modern Speedmaster ’57 draws on that design-era heritage, but it should not be described as the model that flew on Apollo missions. The ’57’s appeal is a connection to the original Speedmaster period, expressed in a modern hand-wound chronograph.
What makes the Moonwatch distinct
The Moonwatch is the line to choose for the familiar NASA and Apollo association. OMEGA says the Speedmaster was qualified by NASA for “all manned space missions” in 1965 and became official equipment on successful Apollo missions from Apollo 11 in 1969 through Apollo 17 in 1972. In its 2022 Apollo 17 anniversary release, OMEGA President and CEO Raynald Aeschlimann said: “This was the sixth time in history that our Speedmaster was worn on the moon, and the final milestone of our incredible lunar story.” That is OMEGA’s account of its lunar history, not a distinction to transfer to the ’57.

OMEGA’s 2024 white-dial Moonwatch announcement describes a 42 mm steel Moonwatch powered by calibre 3861 and notes the “Dot over Ninety” tachymeter detail. That detail belongs to the specific Moonwatch presentation discussed there; check the exact reference before assuming every Moonwatch variant has identical finishing or configuration. The First Omega in Space commemorates another historical reference point and is a separate heritage choice, not another name for either watch here.
Which one should you choose?
Choose the Speedmaster ’57 if
- You want the smaller stated diameter and a relatively slim listed profile of the cited reference.
- You would use a date display and prefer the ’57’s chronograph-counter arrangement.
- A 60-hour reserve matters to you.
- You are drawn to the original Speedmaster’s 1957 design heritage rather than specifically to the Moonwatch’s Apollo story.
Choose the Moonwatch if
- The NASA qualification and Apollo association are central to your purchase.
- You want the familiar Moonwatch design and calibre 3861 in the cited version.
- You prefer a particular Moonwatch bracelet, strap, crystal, or dial configuration; compare exact references, since variants differ.
Check the exact local configuration before buying
The cited ’57 specifications come from an OMEGA Japan listing, while the Moonwatch figures come from a manual for one rubber-strap reference. Use the reference number on the local OMEGA or authorized-retailer listing to confirm the dimensions, movement, crystal, strap or bracelet, and available dial before comparing prices. No reliable apples-to-apples current price comparison is established here, so current local pricing should be checked for the exact configurations you are considering.
