The classic black-dial Moonwatch keeps the Speedmaster’s original contrast: white hands and indexes against a black face. The 2024 white-dial Moonwatch reverses that scheme with a lacquered white dial, black details, applied indices and red “Speedmaster” lettering. Both appeal to different tastes; official descriptions do not establish that either is universally more legible, versatile or valuable.
What is the difference between the white and black Moonwatch?
The main difference is the dial’s colour and finish, not a different movement family. OMEGA describes the original Speedmaster arrangement as white hands and indexes on a black dial. Its 2024 white-dial Moonwatch flips those colours, adding a glossy lacquer finish, black detailing, applied indices and red Speedmaster text. OMEGA identifies the white model’s movement as Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 3861.

OMEGA presented the white dial as inspired by the black-and-white colours of astronaut spacesuits, especially suits used for extravehicular activity, and by the ALASKA I prototype created in 1969 as part of a NASA project. Those are the manufacturer’s stated design inspirations, not evidence that one colourway performs better in a legibility test.

Which dial should you choose?
Choose black if you want the traditional Moonwatch look
The black dial is the choice for buyers who want the original Speedmaster colour arrangement OMEGA describes: white hands and indexes set against black. It is the more direct fit if historical continuity and the familiar dark face matter most to you.
Choose white if you prefer the reversed colourway
The 2024 white model keeps the Moonwatch identity while making the dial itself the visual change. Its lacquered surface, black detailing and red lettering give it a brighter, more distinct look than the traditional black version.

OMEGA said the reversed colourway was intended to achieve the same legibility result as the original. That is the manufacturer’s design account; the available model descriptions do not provide independent comparative testing establishing that one is easier to read in particular conditions.
Do not confuse the white dial with OMEGA’s inverted black-and-white models
On 13 January 2026, OMEGA announced additional inverted black-and-white Moonwatch models. Those watches have a polished black top dial plate, white lacquered subdial bases and a white main-dial minute track. The announcement describes both 42 mm steel and 18K Moonshine Gold options, powered by Calibre 3861, with Master Chronometer certification and a five-year warranty. This is a separate configuration—not the traditional black main dial and not the 2024 white main dial. Details are in OMEGA’s 13 January 2026 announcement.

Check the exact reference and configuration before buying
Dial colour alone does not tell you whether a watch is on a bracelet or strap, or which crystal and caseback configuration it has. Match the full reference number and configuration to OMEGA’s product information or authorized-retailer documentation before comparing offers.
The steel-bracelet references are commonly identified as 310.30.42.50.01.001 for traditional black and 310.30.42.50.04.001 for white, but those numbers should be verified against the specific product documentation before purchase. Availability, seller authorization and current prices depend on the offer and were not established here.
