Omega’s steel Speedmaster with the revived Calibre 321 is a modern watch inspired by the ST 105.003 associated with astronaut Edward “Ed” White’s 1965 spacewalk. It is not White’s original watch or a vintage reissue: the modern model, reference 311.30.40.30.01.001, pairs that historical design reference with a reconstructed manual-winding movement.

What is the Omega Speedmaster “Ed White”?

“Ed White” is the nickname commonly used for Omega’s modern steel Speedmaster powered by the revived Calibre 321. The name points to its historical inspiration: the third-generation Speedmaster ST 105.003 that White wore during the first American spacewalk in 1965. Omega describes the modern watch as inspired by that model; the association does not mean White wore the contemporary watch.

The modern watch is a new production model, not an original 1960s ST 105.003. Its movement is a reconstruction of the historic Calibre 321, rather than a surviving original mechanism.

What are the modern steel model’s specifications?

Omega’s Hong Kong product listing identifies the steel model as reference 31130403001001. It gives a 39.7 mm case, steel construction, black ceramic bezel ring with a white-enamel tachymeter scale, and a black step dial. The movement is manual winding, uses a column wheel and has a listed power reserve of 55 hours.

Why is the Calibre 321 important?

Omega’s corporate archive describes the Calibre 321 as the first movement used in the Speedmaster, in 1957, following earlier use in some Omega Seamaster chronographs. It is a monobloc column-wheel chronograph movement. Omega’s 2019 announcement said the original movement’s production ended in 1968; that date is the company’s account, not an independently established production history.

The revived movement was developed through more than two years of work by a dedicated team. Swatch Group says Omega used the second-generation Calibre 321 as a reference, consulted original plans and conducted historical research. The team also used tomography to examine the ST 105.003 worn by Gene Cernan on Apollo 17. Omega said the revived movements would be made at its headquarters in Bienne, with their creation taking place in a dedicated workshop. Swatch Group’s 2019 archive on the Calibre 321 revival.

How does it relate to Ed White’s watch?

White wore an ST 105.003 Speedmaster during his 1965 spacewalk. Omega and Swatch Group connect the modern steel Calibre 321 model to that reference through its inspiration and historical design lineage. It is more accurate to call the modern watch a tribute or an inspired-by model than to call it White’s original watch or imply that he wore the new release.

The historical connection is also distinct from the movement’s reconstruction. Omega’s work drew on documents and technical study, including tomography of Cernan’s Apollo 17 watch; the modern Calibre 321 is a newly made reconstruction, not an original movement removed from an Ed White-era watch.

How does the steel version compare with other Calibre 321 editions?

Omega’s product page also identifies two materially different Calibre 321 Speedmasters. These are not direct substitutes for the steel model: the case materials, sizes and strap configuration differ.
