Published on May 6, 2025, the report pointed to refreshed system sounds, redesigned watch-app icons and Gemini as Samsung’s built-in Google assistant experience. Samsung later confirmed the broader direction with the Galaxy Watch8, Watch8 Classic and a One UI 8 Watch rollout for the Galaxy Watch Ultra.
The leak got the headline details broadly right. However, Samsung’s finished update turned out to be about more than cosmetic changes and AI: Now Bar, Multi-Info Tiles and new health features became the more important parts of the One UI 8 Watch story.
What the One UI 8 Watch leak showed
The original report was based on a leaked One UI 8 Watch firmware build, with assets attributed to the X account @DevOfIpos. It reportedly revealed three areas of change:
- Refreshed system sounds, including charging, low-battery and camera-shutter tones.
- Updated watch-app icons using a design language similar to Samsung’s One UI 7 icons.
- Gemini replacing Google Assistant as the headline Google assistant experience for the next Galaxy Watch generation.
The first two findings came from leaked firmware assets, not a complete Samsung changelog. Samsung’s public documentation does not provide an itemized catalog of every new sound or confirm that every leaked icon appears on every eligible watch.

New sounds and an updated Over the Horizon
The leak reportedly contained revised audio for events such as charging, low battery and the camera shutter, along with a refreshed version of Samsung’s Over the Horizon signature tune. These are interface refinements rather than major functional features.
The safest interpretation is that compatible watches received some updated audio assets as part of the One UI 8 Watch software. It would be inaccurate to claim that every Galaxy Watch received the same sound package or that Samsung published a complete old-versus-new audio comparison.
Refreshed icons
The leaked firmware also showed redesigned app icons. Their visual treatment reportedly resembled the icon refresh introduced with One UI 7 on Samsung phones.
That does not necessarily mean the entire Galaxy Watch lineup received an identical icon redesign. Leaked assets can indicate Samsung’s intended interface direction without establishing final model-by-model availability. Samsung’s official Watch8 materials show a broader One UI 8 Watch redesign, including the Now Bar and redesigned information views, but do not publish a complete icon changelog.

Did Gemini replace Google Assistant?
“Replaced” needs some qualification. On the Watch8 generation, Gemini became Samsung’s built-in Google assistant experience, but it did not mean that every other assistant option disappeared.
Samsung says Gemini is built into the Galaxy Watch8 and Watch8 Classic. It can answer questions, provide ideas and perform actions across apps using voice commands. Samsung gives requesting music suited to a running pace as an example.
Samsung’s support documentation says Gemini is selected during Watch8 setup. Owners can disable it through Settings → Google → Turn off Gemini. The same documentation continues to distinguish Gemini from Bixby, Google Assistant and Alexa, which have different availability and capabilities across Galaxy Watch devices.
Some assistant functions require an internet connection, LTE or a paired phone. Gemini can also produce incomplete or incorrect answers, and voice interaction may be less private in public places. It is best viewed as a convenient wrist-based assistant, not a replacement for every phone-based Google service.

What Samsung actually delivered with One UI 8 Watch
The leak focused attention on sounds, icons and Gemini, but Samsung’s finished software release was broader. Official materials highlighted:
- Running Coach for guided running plans and feedback.
- Vascular Load, a health-related measurement presented as a wellness feature.
- Antioxidant Index, also subject to Samsung’s market, device and usage limitations.
- Multi-Info Tiles for combining more information in glanceable watch views.
- Now Bar for surfacing ongoing activities and relevant information.
Samsung launched the Watch8 and Watch8 Classic with One UI 8 Watch and Gemini. On July 22, 2025, Samsung also announced the One UI 8 Watch update for the Galaxy Watch Ultra. Its official announcement described a progressive rollout to previous Galaxy Watch models.
These health functions are wellness tools, not medical diagnoses. Availability can vary by market, model and paired smartphone. Samsung’s health-feature support information includes additional restrictions and disclaimers.

What happened to One UI 7 Watch?
The 2025 leak suggested Samsung might skip a distinct One UI 7 Watch release and move directly to One UI 8 Watch. That was a firmware-roadmap inference at the time, not a formal public cancellation announcement covering every Galaxy Watch or region.
Samsung subsequently positioned One UI 8 Watch as the major watch interface accompanying the Watch8 generation and began progressively distributing it to selected earlier models.

The sources confirm One UI 8 Watch on:
- Galaxy Watch8
- Galaxy Watch8 Classic
- Galaxy Watch Ultra, through Samsung’s later update announcement
Samsung also described a progressive rollout to previous Galaxy Watch models. There is no single safe answer for every owner because eligibility can differ by watch generation, Bluetooth or LTE version, country, firmware, paired Android phone and Samsung or Google account configuration.
Check Galaxy Wearable → Watch settings → Watch software update on a compatible phone, or consult Samsung’s regional support page for the exact model. Do not assume that an update available for one Watch7, Watch Ultra or LTE variant is available for every regional equivalent.

What One UI 8 Watch means for existing owners
Sounds and icons are not upgrade reasons by themselves
New tones and icons make a watch feel refreshed, but they do not justify replacing otherwise capable hardware. If your existing watch is eligible, these improvements may arrive through software.
Gemini may be useful if you use voice commands
Gemini is more relevant if you regularly ask for information, control activities or interact with apps while exercising or moving. Its value is lower if you rarely use a watch assistant, prefer Bixby or do not want an internet-connected AI service on your wrist.
The health and interface changes matter more
Running Coach, Multi-Info Tiles and Now Bar affect daily use more directly than a new charging sound. Health-feature availability and performance still depend on the watch’s sensors, software, market and paired phone.
Should you buy a new watch for One UI 8 Watch?
| Model | Best fit | Why choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Galaxy Watch8 | Most buyers | Complete Watch8-generation One UI 8 Watch experience with built-in Gemini. |
| Galaxy Watch8 Classic | Traditional-watch fans | Similar software experience with the Classic design and rotating bezel. |
| Galaxy Watch Ultra | Outdoor users | Larger, more rugged hardware with One UI 8 Watch delivered through an update. |
| Existing eligible Galaxy Watch | Value-focused owners | Potential access to much of the software experience without replacing hardware. |
Samsung’s U.S. June 2026 MSRP sheet listed the Watch8 Bluetooth models at $349.99 for 40mm and $379.99 for 44mm. The Watch8 Classic Bluetooth model was listed at $499.99, while Galaxy Watch Ultra variants were listed at $649.99. These are MSRP figures and may change; regional prices and promotions differ. See Samsung’s price sheet for the cited U.S. figures.

Choose the Watch8 if you want the mainstream One UI 8 Watch experience, the Classic if its rotating bezel matters to you, and the Ultra if you specifically need its larger outdoor-oriented hardware. Buying a new watch solely for updated sounds or icons is difficult to justify.
The verdict on the leak
The May 2025 leak was directionally accurate. It correctly pointed toward refreshed sounds, updated icons and Gemini, and Samsung later confirmed the One UI 8 Watch platform and Gemini on the Watch8 generation.
But the leak was only an early snapshot. The more consequential story became Samsung’s broader software and health overhaul: Now Bar, Multi-Info Tiles, Running Coach, Vascular Load and Antioxidant Index. For owners, the right question is not whether the new sounds are exciting; it is whether their specific watch and phone support the features they will actually use.
