The appeal is personal, not a claim that Hublot is objectively better value or technically superior to other watchmakers.
Hublot’s design has a point of view
Some luxury watches aim for understatement. Hublot’s Big Bang line goes the other way, pairing a substantial silhouette with layered surfaces, visible hardware and contrasting materials. I enjoy that confidence. A watch can be an instrument and an accessory, and Hublot makes no effort to pretend the latter role is incidental.
That visual assertiveness is not for every wrist or every wardrobe. It is precisely why the design works for me: the watch feels intentional, with a recognizable identity rather than a generic luxury-watch outline.
The “Art of Fusion” makes sense as a design idea
Hublot says it paired an 18K gold case with a rubber strap in 1980, a combination it presents as the first expression of its “Art of Fusion.” That mix captures what I find appealing: a precious metal alongside a material associated with sport and utility. The interest is in the contrast, not in treating the combination as proof of superior performance. Hublot’s materials overview describes rubber as a core brand material.
Hublot’s materials vocabulary has since expanded to include Magic Gold, high-tech ceramic and synthetic sapphire. The company describes Magic Gold as its proprietary 18K gold alloy, and highlights ceramic and sapphire in its case and bezel designs. Those are manufacturer descriptions, not independent comparisons of durability or quality. Still, the willingness to make material choices part of the visual identity is a meaningful part of the attraction for me.
The Big Bang is the clearest expression of that identity
LVMH dates the Big Bang collection’s launch to 2005. Its importance to Hublot is easy to understand: the collection gives the brand a consistent platform for experimenting with scale, surface and material combinations. In 2026, Hublot introduced the 43 mm Big Bang Original Unico, with an in-house Unico chronograph caliber, a sapphire crystal caseback and a One Click interchangeable strap system. Hublot also identifies five patented innovations in the model; that is the brand’s claim, not an independent technical assessment. Hublot’s January 19, 2026 announcement lists Black Magic ceramic, titanium, titanium with ceramic, and King Gold with ceramic versions.
I like the Unico’s balance of a recognizable Big Bang exterior with a movement and complication that give the watch more than visual presence. The 43 mm case is a substantial dimension, though size alone does not determine how a watch wears: wrist shape, thickness, lug geometry and personal comfort matter too. Anyone considering one should try the exact reference on rather than infer fit from the diameter.
New materials make the design language more adventurous
The September 2026 Big Bang Original Soft Touch is an especially clear example of Hublot putting material front and center. Hublot says its textured rubber compound extends across the case, bezel, dial and strap. The release describes a 43 mm titanium case, an in-house Unico caliber with a stated 72-hour power reserve, and the One Click system. Hublot says the collection is available through selected points of sale and hublot.com. The Soft Touch idea appeals to me because it makes the material choice impossible to miss. It also underscores the trade-off inherent in Hublot’s approach: these watches make a stronger visual statement than a restrained dress watch, so they suit a wearer who wants that presence rather than someone seeking something discreet.
Why the criticism doesn’t cancel the appeal
Hublot attracts pointed online criticism. A Reddit thread titled “Why is Hublot the internet’s favourite brand to hate?” is one example of that conversation, but a single discussion is anecdotal; it cannot establish what watch buyers generally think. The discussion on r/Watches is best read as a snapshot of individual opinions, not a representative survey.

To me, strong reactions are unsurprising when a brand’s design is so easy to recognize. The same size, conspicuous styling and material contrasts that make Hublot compelling to me can feel excessive to someone else. That difference is a matter of taste, not a verdict that either side has misunderstood watches.

I like Hublot for visual conviction, material experimentation and a contemporary identity that is distinct from more restrained traditions in watch design. The current Big Bang Original Unico gives that identity a concrete form, with a 43 mm case, Unico chronograph caliber and interchangeable strap system.

That preference is not a claim that a Hublot is a better buy than a similarly priced watch from another maker. A fair purchase comparison would need to weigh the exact reference’s price, fit, movement and complications, materials, service arrangements and warranty terms against specific alternatives. The cited product information does not establish a market-wide value ranking, independent movement test results or resale performance. I simply find Hublot’s design choices unusually engaging—and that is enough to explain why I like the watches.
