It makes sense if you want the collaboration, ocean-themed styling and mechanical novelty at $445 in the current US collection. Choose something else if you need a serviceable movement, hard-impact resistance or a watch intended as a decades-long heirloom.
What the watch is—and what it is not
Swatch and Blancpain announced the collection on 7 September 2023. The launch range contained five ocean-named models sold through selected Swatch stores; the collection later expanded to include Ocean of Storms. Swatch describes the models as non-limited automatic watches. They borrow the visual language of the Fifty Fathoms, but the case, movement and ownership proposition are fundamentally different from a professional Blancpain diver.
The current Swatch US collection page lists models such as Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean, Indian Ocean and Green Abyss at $445. The earlier launch price reported by Hodinkee was $400 on 6 September 2023, so the two figures refer to different points in the product’s life rather than a contradiction.
Design, colors and wearing experience
Bioceramic case
Blancpain defines Bioceramic as a patented blend of two-thirds ceramic and one-third biosourced material derived from castor oil. The result feels matte and light on the wrist. That lightness is a major part of the appeal, but it should not be interpreted as steel-like toughness: hands-on reviewers found that the watch did not feel capable of absorbing a major knock like a steel dive watch.

Large dimensions in a light package
Independent hands-on measurements are 42.3 mm in diameter, 48 mm lug-to-lug and 14.4 mm thick (Fratello Watches, 2023). Those dimensions are substantial, and the supplied NATO strap adds height and visual bulk. The low mass prevents it from feeling heavy, but smaller wrists may find the case wide and the strap excessive.
Ocean variants
The initial color names were Arctic Ocean, Pacific Ocean, Atlantic Ocean, Indian Ocean and Antarctic Ocean. Ocean of Storms was added later. Color choice is therefore primarily a style decision: the underlying case and movement concept is shared, while the dial, bezel and color accents create each model’s personality.

Strap practicality
The NATO strap is comfortable but long. Drilled lugs make changing it straightforward, so a shorter NATO or another compatible strap is the simplest way to improve fit and reduce the watch’s visual height.
Movement and long-term ownership
The watch uses Swatch’s SISTEM51 automatic movement. Swatch Group states that it has 51 parts, a 90-hour power reserve and a Nivachron anti-magnetic hairspring. The movement is notable because its production is entirely automated.

The trade-off is serviceability. Fratello’s 2023 review reports that the simplified SISTEM51 construction is not conventionally serviceable, and the glued caseback prevents a normal movement swap. In practical terms, owners should not approach this as a mechanical watch that can receive the routine overhaul-and-repair cycle associated with a traditional Swiss movement. There is no authoritative independent long-term failure-rate statistic for this collection, so the eventual lifespan of an individual example cannot be predicted from published evidence.
Water resistance: suitable for swimming, not a professional tool
Swatch lists 91 metres (50 fathoms) of water resistance, the rating cited in Swatch Group’s 2023 launch announcement. That is adequate for ordinary swimming and shallow recreational use when the crown is secure and the watch is in good condition.

The rating does not make the watch equivalent to a professional Blancpain Fifty Fathoms. The case material, bezel behavior and movement architecture are different, and reviewers found less precise bezel action and lower impact resistance than on steel professional divers. Treat it as a recreational, design-led watch rather than equipment for demanding or commercial diving.

Who should buy it?
Buy if these are your priorities
- You specifically want the Swatch–Blancpain collaboration and its ocean-color design.
- You prefer a light watch with an automatic movement and a 90-hour power reserve.
- Your water use is swimming or shallow recreational activity rather than demanding dive work.
- You accept that eventual movement replacement or limited service options may be part of ownership.
- You are comfortable wearing a 42.3 mm, 14.4 mm-thick watch or changing the long NATO strap.
Skip it if these requirements matter
- You need a movement that a watchmaker can routinely overhaul.
- You expect steel-like resistance to knocks and abrasion.
- You want highly precise, tool-watch bezel action.
- You are buying an heirloom intended to run for decades with conventional maintenance.
Which ocean color should you choose?
There is no evidence that one color has a mechanical or water-resistance advantage over another. Choose by legibility and wardrobe: darker blue or black-oriented combinations are generally the least conspicuous, while brighter ocean colors make the collaboration unmistakable. Because the case and strap dominate the wrist presence, trying the exact color in person is more useful than choosing from the ocean name alone.

Our take
The Scuba Fifty Fathoms succeeds as a playful, accessible interpretation of a famous dive-watch design. Its bright colors, transparent back, light Bioceramic case and unusually long power reserve give it a clear identity. Its limits are equally clear: large proportions, less exact bezel feel, modest impact confidence and a simplified movement that is not a normal service proposition. Buy it for the experience and design; do not buy it expecting a professional Blancpain or a conventional mechanical heirloom.
