The listing was an early sign that OnePlus was preparing a successor, not an announcement or proof that a new watch was about to go on sale.
Why the certification appeared unusually early
The OnePlus Watch 2 had launched only a few months before the June 2024 BIS sighting. That made a possible successor an unexpected piece of news, especially because OnePlus had not publicly discussed a Watch 3. It did not necessarily mean the company had accelerated its retail schedule: manufacturers can develop and submit future products for regulatory testing well before announcing them.
Those are separate milestones. Product development can begin before a current model reaches stores; certification is a compliance step; an announcement is a public disclosure; and retail release is when customers can buy the product. The June listing provided evidence at the certification stage, not a date for either of the later milestones. The original report expected the Watch 3 no earlier than 2025. Android Headlines’ June 11, 2024 report described the BIS appearance.
What the BIS entry actually revealed
The listing identified a OnePlus-branded smartwatch with model number OPWWE234. That number resembled the OnePlus Watch 2’s OPWWE231, lending support to the interpretation that this was a successor. A BIS record also suggested relevance to the Indian market. It did not amount to OnePlus confirming the Watch 3’s final name, design or release plans.

- Supported by the listing: a OnePlus smartwatch with model number OPWWE234 had appeared in India’s BIS database.
- Not established: its final retail name, design, display, processor, operating system, sensors, price, launch date or availability outside India.
Certification records can indicate that hardware is moving through compliance checks. They cannot by themselves establish when a product will launch, what its finished specifications will be, or whether it will be sold in every market.
What was known about the hardware—and what was not
The June report also pointed to a possible 500mAh battery from a TUV Rheinland database appearance. That was an early indication, not a confirmed retail specification; it matched the Watch 2’s battery capacity and did not establish the finished Watch 3’s battery or battery life.
At that point, the available information did not settle the display size or type, chipset, case dimensions, health sensors, GPS capabilities, software, price, market availability, or whether OnePlus would offer multiple sizes or a Pro model. Later specifications should not be read back into what the June listing showed.

What a later regulatory filing added
In December 2024, reports about an FCC listing associated a device with model number OPWWE251 and supplied more hardware clues. Reports gave dimensions of approximately 46.6 × 47.6 × 11.75mm, making it thinner than the Watch 2’s reported 12.1mm, and described battery figures in the 631–648mAh range. They also reported Bluetooth, GNSS, NFC and Wi-Fi connectivity. The filing did not provide a complete feature list or establish a launch date.

The figures should be understood as reporting about a regulatory filing, not as a final consumer specification. Later coverage distinguished a rated capacity of 631mAh from a typical capacity of 648mAh; OnePlus ultimately listed 631mAh for the retail Watch 3. The June model number OPWWE234 and December model number OPWWE251 are different, and the available launch materials do not explain their precise relationship. 9to5Google’s December 5 report covered the battery and dimensions; Android Headlines’ December 6 report covered the FCC appearance.

OnePlus officially launched the Watch 3 in the United States and Canada on February 18, 2025. Its announcement confirmed a 631mAh battery, Wear OS 5 alongside RTOS in a dual-engine architecture, and a 60-second Health Check-In feature. The June 2024 BIS entry had not disclosed those details; they were confirmed later by OnePlus. The official launch announcement documents that launch and its stated features.

OnePlus lists a 1.5-inch LTPO AMOLED display with 466 × 466 resolution, a Snapdragon W5 main processor and BES2800 efficiency chipset, and dimensions of 46.6 × 47.6 × 11.75mm. Its U.S. specifications page claims up to five days in Smart Mode, three days with heavy use and 16 days in Power Saver mode. The five-day figure is conditional: OnePlus’s stated scenario uses an official watch face, disables always-on display and specifies health monitoring, connectivity, sleep tracking, messages, calls, music and GPS activity. Actual battery life depends on settings and use. See OnePlus’s specifications.
OnePlus describes the Watch 3’s health functions as wellness and fitness tools, not medical diagnostics, and says the watch is not a medical device. Its U.S. product page also notes limitations around phone-specific functions and water use. Launch in the United States and Canada does not, by itself, establish availability in every other market.

There was also a later sales delay after an early-review device labeling error. Ars Technica reported the delay and pricing changes, then separately reported a subsequent price reduction and refunds for affected early buyers: its report on the delayed launch and its report on the reduction and refunds. Those later events do not change what the earlier BIS sighting could establish.
What to take from a smartwatch certification sighting
- It can indicate progress: the manufacturer has submitted a device for a regulatory process relevant to at least one market.
- It may expose limited clues: a model number and, in some filings, radio, battery or dimension information.
- It is not a launch announcement: timing, final specifications, price and broader regional availability still need confirmation.
For the OnePlus Watch 3, the most defensible June 2024 reading was that OnePlus appeared to be preparing a successor unusually early in the public record, with a likely 2025 debut—not that a retail launch was imminent.
