The Oura Ring 4 is still a well-built, capable smart ring, but it is no longer Oura’s newest model. As of October 9, 2026, Oura’s own support documentation refers to Ring 5 sizing, and independent 2026 coverage reviews Ring 5. Whether a Ring 4 is worth buying now comes down to three things: its price compared with Ring 5, your willingness to pay a recurring membership, and whether you can get a correct fit.
Is the Ring 4 still worth it?
For a buyer who finds the Ring 4 meaningfully cheaper than Ring 5, and who is comfortable paying for an Oura membership, it remains a reasonable choice. The reasons are its all-titanium construction, a sizing range of 4 to 15, and a sensor set that Oura describes as covering sleep, heart rate, temperature, blood oxygen, and activity. If the two models are priced close together, the newer Ring 5 is the better default, because the evidence available here does not show the Ring 4 offering an advantage that would justify choosing the older hardware at the same price.

What the sensors measure
Oura describes its adaptive sensing approach as “Smart Sensing.” The Ring 4 uses the following components, according to its support page:
- Red and infrared LEDs for nighttime blood-oxygen measurement.
- Green and infrared PPG sensors for continuous heart rate, plus nighttime heart rate variability and respiration.
- A digital temperature sensor that tracks average temperature variation.
- An accelerometer for movement and activity tracking.
Oura describes these readings as research-grade. That is the company’s own characterisation. The materials reviewed here do not include independent clinical validation of the Ring 4’s accuracy, so treat the claim as a manufacturer statement.

Sizing: getting the fit right
Oura warns that ring sizing differs between generations, so a Ring 3 size does not carry over. Use the sizing process below before ordering.
- Order the sizing kit marked for Ring 4, not a kit from an earlier generation.
- Wear the sizing ring on the finger you plan to use, and check that it fits snugly without restricting circulation.
- Match the size to the range of 4 to 15 on Oura’s chart.
- When you wear the Ring 4, position the sensors toward the palm side of the finger. Oura says this supports both fit and reading quality.
A wrong size is the most practical risk with this ring. A ring that is too loose can shift and reduce sensor contact, and one that is too tight is uncomfortable for round-the-clock wear.

Battery and charging in practice
Oura’s typical figure of 5 to 8 days is a range, not a guarantee. The Member Care documentation attributes variation to ring size, settings, enabled features, activity, the age of the battery, and general use. A ring that has been in service for a long time, or one used with many features switched on, should be expected to land at the lower end of the range. Charging from nearly empty takes longer than topping up, which is why the 20 to 80 minute window is so wide.
Membership: what you pay and what you get
The ring is a one-time purchase, but the app’s full feature set requires an Oura membership. Oura’s US product page lists the following, before tax:

Which features remain available without a membership was not established in the sources reviewed, so do not assume a free tier covers what you need. Factor the annual fee into the total cost of ownership, and compare it with the Ring 5 membership terms at the time of purchase.

What one reviewer found
A Tom’s Guide reviewer who wore the Ring 4 reports greater comfort than with their earlier Ring 3, and fewer gaps in sleep and stress data. They describe the all-titanium build, recessed sensors, and wider sizing range favourably. These observations come from one reviewer’s wear experience and are not controlled testing or a guarantee for other wearers.
The same reviewer found step counts less reliable than those from some smartwatches, with counts sometimes up to 1,000 steps off on certain days. Anyone who relies heavily on step totals should weigh that.
The reviewer’s upgrade advice was cautious. Ring 3 owners may have little reason to switch unless their ring is several years old or they specifically want the newer hardware.
Ring 4 or Ring 5
A Woman & Home smart-ring comparison published in October 2026 reports that Ring 5 is slimmer than its predecessor, with a width of 6.09 mm, a thickness of 2.28 mm, and battery life of up to 9 days. These are the comparison publisher’s figures, not figures from Oura’s official pages.

Who should buy the Ring 4
- Buyers who find it clearly cheaper than Ring 5 and are happy with its feature set.
- Buyers who want a titanium ring with recessed sensors and have confirmed their size with the Ring 4 kit.
- Buyers who already accept an ongoing membership fee as part of using an Oura ring.
Who should look at Ring 5 instead
- Anyone buying a first ring and not already committed to a particular generation.
- Anyone for whom battery life or a slimmer profile is a priority, provided the price difference is small.
- Ring 3 owners whose rings are still in good condition, as the reviewer suggests.
