Panerai’s America’s Cup relationship has two distinct parts: the watchmaker says it became an Official Partner of the competition in 2017, then began sponsoring the Italian Luna Rossa team in 2019. The team’s official announcement says Panerai will continue as its sponsor for the 38th America’s Cup campaign. Panerai is a partner and sponsor—not the organizer of the Cup.
What is Panerai’s connection to the America’s Cup?
Panerai describes its competition partnership as beginning in 2017, when it became an Official Partner of the America’s Cup and sponsored Oracle Team USA and Softbank Team Japan. That broader event relationship is separate from the later sponsorship of Luna Rossa, the Italian team. Panerai’s America’s Cup account is the source for its description of that history.
The distinction matters: the America’s Cup is the competition; Luna Rossa is a competing team. Panerai’s role is as a partner and sponsor, not as the body that organizes the Cup.
When did Panerai start sponsoring Luna Rossa?
Panerai and Luna Rossa date their team partnership to 2019. Panerai says it became the team’s Official Sponsor that year, and Luna Rossa’s partnership page also identifies 2019 as the start of the relationship. At the time, Luna Rossa was Challenger of Record for the 36th America’s Cup, according to Panerai’s 2019 partnership announcement.

Which Panerai watches are part of the Luna Rossa collection?
Panerai connects the Luna Rossa collection with technologies used in the America’s Cup and with insights and needs from the team. Its US collection page names these references: PAM01404, PAM01519, PAM01381 and PAM01378. The page presents its material in relation to the 37th Cup, so the references should not be described as new releases for the 38th campaign without current model-specific confirmation. See Panerai’s US Luna Rossa collection page.
The first watch Panerai identified as inspired by its Luna Rossa partnership was the Submersible Luna Rossa PAM01039, announced in 2019. The launch release described it as a diving watch with a Carbotech case and 300-metre water resistance. Those are details from the dated launch announcement, not confirmation of current availability or a current specification. Read the 2019 announcement.

For a buying comparison, verify each exact reference against a current listing. Useful points to check are case size and material, movement and functions, water resistance, strap or bracelet, production status, and price. The collection page’s reference list alone does not establish those comparable details.

The sponsorship gives Panerai a direct link to elite sailing and to an Italian team with a long Cup history. Luna Rossa’s official history dates the team’s founding to 1997. Panerai also says the America’s Cup predates the modern Olympics by 45 years; that figure is Panerai’s statement, rather than an independently established historical comparison here.
