The Panerai Submersible Elux LAB-ID PAM01800 uses energy stored in its mechanical movement to generate electricity for on-demand dial lighting. It is not a battery-powered light module: four of the watch’s six barrels feed a microgenerator, which powers 160 micro-LEDs. The result is an unusual instrument watch that pairs a 30-minute total lighting allowance with a 49 mm diving-watch case rated to 50 bar.
What the Panerai Submersible Elux LAB-ID is
The PAM01800 is a fully mechanical concept watch developed by Panerai’s manufacture in Neuchâtel. Panerai describes it as the result of eight years of research and development and a showcase for four dedicated patent applications. Those are the manufacturer’s descriptions; the product page does not identify the applications’ granted or pending status.
Its defining feature is the Power Light system: mechanical energy is converted into electricity to illuminate selected parts of the watch when requested. The idea joins an unconventional complication to the Submersible’s diving-watch format, rather than replacing the mechanical movement with an electronic timekeeping module.
How the Power Light system works
Six barrels divide the watch’s stored energy
Panerai reports that the automatic P.9010/EL calibre contains 363 components and six barrels. Four barrels are dedicated to the light function; the remaining two supply the time indication, for a stated three-day reserve. The movement can be wound automatically or manually.

A microgenerator powers 160 micro-LEDs
When the wearer operates the protected Power Light pusher at 8 o’clock, energy from the four lighting barrels drives a compact microgenerator. Panerai says its rotor runs at 80 revolutions per second and produces a 240 Hz signal for 160 micro-LEDs. The LEDs illuminate the dial indexes, hands and a marker dot on the unidirectional rotating bezel.
Panerai identifies maintaining electrical contact with the moving hands and bezel while preserving water resistance as particular engineering challenges. The light is activated on demand, for up to 30 minutes in total; that figure is the system’s stated total allowance, not a claim that it runs continuously for 30 minutes after each press.

What “Elux” means
Panerai says “Elux” abbreviates elettroluminescenza, or electroluminescence. The name refers to the company’s history with illuminated instruments: Panerai states that it patented electroluminescent panels on June 15, 1966, for retro-illuminating Italian Navy instrument panels. The PAM01800 applies the name to a watch-scale system that generates its lighting electricity from mechanical energy.
Case, water resistance and material claims
The case measures 49 mm and is made from blue Ti-Ceramitech, a ceramized titanium material. Panerai says the material is produced through Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation, which forms a ceramic layer on titanium. The company claims it is 44% lighter than steel and has ten times the fracture toughness of traditional ceramic; these are manufacturer comparisons, not independently established results in the cited product information.

- DIVER-INSPIRED DESIGN — Inspired by the sea, the MDV-106G is styled after classic dive watches and delivers 200-meter water resistance at an unbeatable price point. The black resin band and stainless steel case give it a classic look, while the anti-reverse rotary bezel adds authentic dive-watch character.
- STAINLESS STEEL CASE WITH SCREW-LOCK CROWN & CASEBACK — The MDV-106G features a stainless steel case and a reliable screw-lock crown for enhanced water resistance protection. Screw-down crown and screw-lock caseback work together to keep the movement sealed and secure during water activities — a construction standard found on dive watches far above this price range.
- LARGE FLUORESCENT HANDS & INDICES FOR INSTANT READABILITY — The dial features hands and hour indices with large fluorescent areas for easy reading in low-light and underwater conditions. The clean 3-hand analog layout with date display at 3 o'clock keeps the dial uncluttered and immediately legible at a glance.
- 44MM STAINLESS STEEL CASE | 22MM LUG WIDTH | MINERAL GLASS — The case measures 44mm in diameter, 12mm in height, with a 49mm lug-to-lug length and a standard 22mm lug width — making strap upgrades effortless with a vast range of aftermarket options. Mineral glass protects the dial from everyday scratches and impacts.
- 3-YEAR BATTERY & 200M WATER RESISTANCE — Powered by an SR626SW battery with an approximate 3-year life, the case measures 49.5 × 46.3 × 12.1mm and weighs 92 grams. At 200 meters of water resistance, the Duro is versatile and suitable for all situations — whether in the water, hiking, running, or at the office.
Panerai’s 2025 catalogue gives the PAM01800 a water-resistance rating of 50 bar, approximately 500 metres. The dedicated Power Light pusher is at 8 o’clock and has a protective system. The rating describes the watch’s stated water resistance; it does not establish suitability for every diving activity or substitute for following the manufacturer’s operating and service guidance.

How it differs from conventional luminous watches
Many watches use luminous material that absorbs light and glows afterward. The PAM01800 instead has a mechanically powered electrical system that can be switched on, illuminating indexes, hands and a bezel marker. Its practical distinction is control and placement of light, not an unlimited glow: Panerai specifies 30 minutes of total Power Light operation.
The watch also retains conventional luminous material. Panerai says the indexes and hour hand use Super-LumiNova X2, which it claims is 10% more luminous than X1 after 180 minutes in darkness under its referenced ISO 17514 protocol. That comparison is a manufacturer claim, not an independent test result established by the cited sources.

Edition size, price and availability
Panerai states that production is limited to 150 watches, planned as 50 pieces per year for three years. This is a production plan; it does not establish how many have been made or remain available, or how pieces are allocated in any particular country.
The cited sources do not establish a current retail price, resale value, stock status, waiting-list position or regional allocation. Panerai’s page offers registration of interest, appointment booking and concierge contact, but those options are not confirmation of availability. Who the PAM01800 is for
The PAM01800 is best understood as a technical showcase in a large, high-rated Submersible case. Its appeal is the mechanical-to-electrical lighting system, the unusual split of six barrels between timekeeping and illumination, and the historical link Panerai draws to its electroluminescent naval instruments. Someone choosing a watch primarily for compact dimensions, simple night visibility or ordinary dive-watch practicality may find that the 49 mm case and specialized lighting mechanism are not the main reasons to buy it.
