Patek Philippe calls the Grandmaster Chime its most complicated wristwatch. The 2014 anniversary original, reference 5175, combined 20 complications with five chiming functions; its successor, the 6300, carries the same headline complication count. What sets it apart is not simply the number of functions, but the range of its striking mechanisms—including an alarm that chimes a programmed time and a repeater that sounds the date on demand.
Why the Grandmaster Chime is called Patek Philippe’s most complicated wristwatch
The Grandmaster Chime is a mechanical wristwatch built around a dense set of complications: functions beyond the basic display of hours and minutes. Patek Philippe specifies 20 complications and five chiming modes for the 6300. The company’s description of it as its most complicated wristwatch is a manufacturer claim, not a universally defined industry ranking.

The original Grandmaster Chime, reference 5175, was introduced in October 2014 for Patek Philippe’s 175th anniversary. The company said it made seven examples, one of which is displayed at the Patek Philippe Museum in Geneva. The 6300 followed the 5175; it should not be confused with the anniversary reference or treated as a single, unchanging specification across all later versions.
What are the Grandmaster Chime’s five chiming functions?
The cited 6300GR-001 specification lists five striking functions. Grande and petite sonnerie automatically sound the time in different ways; the other three are activated on demand or at a set time.

#1 Best Overall
| Function | What it does |
|---|---|
| Grande sonnerie | Automatically strikes the hours and quarters as time passes. |
| Petite sonnerie | Automatically strikes a more limited sequence of the hours and quarters. |
| Minute repeater | On demand, chimes the hours, quarter-hours and minutes. |
| Alarm with time strike | Sounds a programmed time. Patek Philippe identifies this as a patented world exclusive. |
| Date repeater | Sounds the date on demand. Patek Philippe identifies this as a patented world exclusive. |
The two latter functions make the watch’s striking work unusual even within this category: it can announce both a set alarm time and the date through sound, rather than limiting its chimes to the current time.
What else does the 6300 display?
In addition to its striking functions, Patek Philippe lists a second time zone, an instantaneous perpetual calendar, moon phases, and power-reserve and isolator indications for the 6300GR-001. A perpetual calendar is designed to account for the varying lengths of months and leap years; “instantaneous” describes the calendar’s changeover behavior as specified by the maker.
The watch’s display is split across two sides. Patek Philippe describes the 6300GR-001 as a double-faced watch with a reversible case and patented rotation mechanism, allowing the wearer to turn the case to view the other dial.

The following figures are Patek Philippe’s published specifications for the two-tone 6300GR-001, not independent measurements. They should not be generalized to every Grandmaster Chime reference.

How the 5175 and 6300 differ
The 5175 is the limited anniversary original; the 6300 is its successor. Patek Philippe’s 2016 press release said the 6300 took the position of its most complicated regularly produced wristwatch from the Sky Moon Tourbillon. That wording describes the company’s product positioning at the time, rather than an independent ranking or a statement about every later watch.
Patek Philippe’s collection page currently lists the 6300/403G-001, while the detailed technical figures above are from the separate 6300GR-001 product page. Materials, finish, dimensions and other specifications can vary by reference. The official information cited here does not provide a complete side-by-side specification chart for every Grandmaster Chime version, so features not stated for a particular reference should not be assumed to match.
Why the watch’s “ultimate” status needs a qualification
“Ultimate complication” is a judgment, not a formal watchmaking category with a single agreed winner. Patek Philippe’s claims are clear: it calls the Grandmaster Chime its most complicated wristwatch and, in its 2016 press release, described it as “the world’s greatest mechanical strikework marvel for the wrist.” That superlative is the manufacturer’s own, not independent consensus.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe case for the watch’s distinction rests on specific, verifiable features: 20 stated complications, five chiming functions, a reversible double-faced case, and the two patented functions Patek Philippe identifies as world exclusives. Together, these explain why it occupies such a prominent place in the company’s complicated-watch lineup without requiring an objective “greatest” ranking.
