What does “most valuable online auction ever” mean?
The record wording concerns Phillips’ New York Watches team’s online watch auctions. It does not establish a record for all Phillips online auctions, all Phillips watch sales, or the wider watch-auction market. WatchPro attributes the claim to the sale’s position as the team’s highest-value online watch auction to date; because bidding remained open, it is a pre-sale characterization rather than a verified realized result.
Phillips’ separate June 2026 New York live auction offers context, but it is not the October online sale. The New York Watch Auction: XIV, held June 13–14, totaled $75,807,200, according to Phillips; all 158 of its 158 lots sold. The house said that result broke its prior record for the most valuable watch auction held in the United States. The live-sale result cannot be treated as October’s outcome. How does the sale fit Phillips’ 2026 results?
Phillips reported that its watch auctions in Geneva, Hong Kong and New York exceeded $235 million in the first half of 2026, which it described as the first time an auction house had reached that figure in one season. Across three live and online auctions, the house reported 937 of 939 lots sold, or a 99.8% sell-through rate. These are Phillips’ global first-half figures, not results for the October sale. The house’s dated release is available at Phillips’ first-half 2026 watch sales announcement.
