The Piaget Altiplano Ultimate Concept (AUC) is a mechanical watch designed to be just 2 mm thick from the caseback to the top of its sapphire crystal. Piaget achieves that profile by integrating the movement and case into a single structure rather than stacking a conventional movement inside a separate case. The later Altiplano Ultimate Concept Tourbillon keeps the same stated thickness but adds a flying tourbillon and is a distinct version.
What is the Piaget Altiplano Ultimate Concept?
The AUC is Piaget’s ultra-thin mechanical wristwatch and an exercise in treating the movement and the watch’s structural body as one system. Piaget describes the movement as acting as the structure and the case as the caliber. In practical terms, that means the design does not rely on the usual arrangement of a complete movement enclosed by a separate case; components that would ordinarily be separated or layered are integrated into the watch’s exceptionally shallow architecture.
Piaget says the development took four years. The company dates the first beat of the original AUC to February 7, 2017, at 7:47 pm, and reports five patents associated with the project. It cites wheels as thin as 0.12 mm and a sapphire crystal as thin as 0.2 mm. Those component dimensions help explain the engineering challenge, but the defining measurement is the thickness of the complete watch, not any one part. How thin is the Altiplano Ultimate Concept?
Piaget gives the original Altiplano Ultimate Concept a total thickness of 2 mm, measured from the caseback to the top of the sapphire crystal. The crystal is included in that figure; it is not a 2 mm movement with additional height added for the case or glass. This is the measurement to use when comparing the AUC’s profile with other watches.

The 2 mm figure also applies to the later Tourbillon variant, according to Piaget, but that version has a different movement configuration. Its additional complication should not be mistaken for a feature of the original non-tourbillon AUC.
How the original AUC developed
The AUC belongs to Piaget’s longer pursuit of thin watchmaking. Piaget traces that lineage to Calibre 9P, introduced in 1957 at a height of 2 mm, and then to the Calibre 12P in 1960 and later movements including the 1200P, 1208P and 900P. The AUC took that history toward a different goal: a complete wearable watch measuring 2 mm, rather than simply a movement with that height.

These dates distinguish the working prototype milestone, public presentation, first delivered timepiece and award; they do not describe a single launch date. Piaget’s official Altiplano history sets out the lineage and chronology. The phrase “to do what has never been done before” is attributed by Piaget to Valentin Piaget.
Original Altiplano Ultimate Concept vs. Tourbillon
The Tourbillon is a later, separate AUC model, not simply a new name for the original. It adds a flying tourbillon while retaining Piaget’s stated 2 mm total thickness. Piaget says the complication required 25% additional power and that 90% of the original AUC components were redesigned, alongside the development of new machinery.

What changed in the 2025 Tourbillon interpretation?
Wallpaper* reported on August 29, 2025, that Piaget introduced a khaki-green and yellow-gold interpretation of the Altiplano Ultimate Concept Tourbillon. The report described a sapphire caseback showing Caliber 970P-UC and said the model would be included in Piaget’s Infinitely Personal program, which offers custom finishes, materials and engravings. These details concern that reported interpretation and customization offering; they should not be assumed to apply to every Tourbillon or the original AUC. Wallpaper*’s 2025 report covers the update.
