Porsche Design places the Diver among its 2010 milestones in its official brand history. The Watch Observer’s July 15, 2010 review identifies the watch as the P’6780, with an automatic ETA 2892-A2 movement and reported water resistance of 1,000 m. A later catalog entry documents a specific black PVD version, reference 6780.45.43.1218.
The P’6780’s defining idea is not simply a high water-resistance rating: it is a case that changes configuration to expose or cover its operating controls. The result is a distinctive piece of mechanical design, though its size and moving components make condition and reference-specific verification important when shopping pre-owned.
How does the articulated case work?
The 1916 Company’s 2015 review describes an articulated module, while its 2013 video description says the fold-out section provides a distinct viewing angle and locks the crown and rotating bezel when closed. These published descriptions frame the case as both a visual feature and a way to shield the controls. They are secondary descriptions; an official operating manual was not located in the published material cited here.

For a prospective buyer, the mechanism deserves more scrutiny than a static photograph allows. Check that the upper section moves and closes as intended, and inspect the crown and bezel access points for damage or signs of rough handling. Do not infer that the mechanism is functioning properly solely because the case appears closed in a listing image.

The published figures below do not all describe the same reference or use the same case-size measurement. Keep the source and reference attached to each number rather than treating them as one definitive specification set.

The Watch Observer’s 2010 assessment is one reviewer’s evaluation, not a measure of owner consensus or long-term performance. Pierre Gisclard praised the watch’s original styling, finishing, readability, and 1,000 m resistance. He criticized the small date, strap adjustment, absence of a strap security system, and identical markers.
Those trade-offs matter in different ways. The case architecture and finishing are central to the watch’s appeal, while the date and markers are everyday legibility details. Strap fit and security should be assessed on the actual watch, particularly if it no longer has the strap and clasp documented for its specific reference.

What to check before buying a pre-owned P’6780
Historical catalog and auction records establish that examples have appeared in published listings; they do not establish today’s inventory or market value. Watch.de’s archive identifies a 2017-dated black PVD example, and Antiquorum’s January 24, 2021 catalog records a P’6780 lot. Neither record supports a current price conclusion.
- Confirm the reference and finish. Match the seller’s reference documentation to the watch and distinguish a documented black PVD variant from other examples.
- Verify dimensions against the exact example. Published reports differ: The Watch Observer gives 46.70 mm, Orologi.it gives 46 mm for 6780.45.43.1218, and the 1916 Company video description gives 47 mm.
- Inspect the moving case and controls. Ask for clear photographs or an in-person demonstration of the articulated section opening and closing, and check crown and bezel operation.
- Check the strap and clasp. Rubber straps are documented in the catalog and auction descriptions, but those sources do not establish replacement fit, OEM parts availability, or compatibility of a generic strap.
- Request service and completeness records. Ask what service history, box, papers, and other components are included, and have the seller document any omissions or condition concerns.
- Seek current specialist confirmation where needed. The cited published material does not establish a current official price, live availability, official service interval, or authorized service procedure; confirm these directly with an appropriate current source before relying on them.
Should you consider the P’6780?
The P’6780 is most compelling for a buyer drawn to its unusual articulated case and the combination of that design with a reported 1,000 m rating. The 2010 review also records praise for its finish and readability, alongside practical criticisms of the date, markers, and strap. Treat it as a reference-specific pre-owned purchase: establish exactly which version is offered, inspect the mechanism and included components, and do not use archival listings as a proxy for present-day value.
