Before buying, verify the particular watch’s reference, components, condition, service history and seller protections: a familiar reference number or appealing dial alone cannot establish authenticity or quality.
What makes a Datejust a Datejust?
Rolex dates the Datejust’s launch to 1945. The original was a self-winding chronometer wristwatch with the date in a window at 3 o’clock, and Rolex created the Jubilee bracelet for the model. Over the decades, the line gained features such as the Cyclops date magnifier and evolved through later movement developments. As a result, “vintage Datejust” covers many references and configurations rather than one universal set of specifications. Rolex’s Datejust history is a useful starting point, but it does not authenticate an individual watch.
How do common vintage Datejust references differ?
For a first visual comparison, a specialist guide distinguishes three common four-digit references by bezel style:

This is a visual shorthand from a specialist reference guide, not a definitive specification for every example. Confirm the configuration and originality with a qualified specialist. A reference number does not prove that the dial, hands, bezel, bracelet or movement are original to that watch.

What should you check before buying?
Reference and claimed configuration
- Ask for the reference and any documentation supporting the claimed year and configuration.
- Compare claims about the dial, bezel, case material, bracelet and movement against reliable reference information; do not assume every watch of a given reference remains in its original configuration.
- Ask the seller to identify any replacement, refinished or non-original parts in writing.
Originality and authentication
Ask specifically whether the dial, hands, bezel, bracelet and movement are represented as original, replaced or refinished. Rolex says only Rolex can confirm a Rolex watch’s authenticity and describes checking original configuration and components as part of its own certification process. Paperwork and photographs can support a seller’s account, but neither substitutes for that confirmation. See Rolex’s Certified Pre-Owned information.
Physical condition
Request clear photographs and, where possible, inspect the watch in person. Have a knowledgeable watchmaker assess case and bracelet wear, alignment, operation and signs of refinishing. Photographs can help you spot questions to investigate, but cannot establish authenticity or reveal every condition issue.
Service history and operation
Request service invoices or records, including who performed the work, when it took place and which components were replaced. Rolex recommends periodic professional service approximately every 10 years, depending on model and real-life use. Its service process includes an assessment and estimate before work, followed by testing; details are on Rolex’s servicing page. A stated service history should be supported by records rather than treated as proof of current performance.
Water resistance
Do not assume an old Datejust is safe for swimming or immersion. Rolex notes that some of its oldest Certified Pre-Owned watches may be exceptions to its usual waterproofness performance standard. Ask for an appropriate test of the specific watch and its current condition before exposing it to water.

Seller terms and ownership costs
Compare the written condition statement, return terms, warranty, authentication route and likely service costs alongside the asking price. No reliable current price range is established here: meaningful price comparisons require listings or completed transactions matched for geography, configuration and condition. Do not treat resale value as guaranteed.

Rolex’s Certified Pre-Owned programme applies to second-hand Rolex watches at least two years old sold by participating official retailers. Rolex says programme watches are authenticated, checked for original configuration and components, and serviced; they carry a distinct seal and guarantee card, plus a two-year international guarantee from the date of sale. Participation is limited to certain authorized points of sale, so confirm the retailer is listed and displays the programme plaque. A marketplace listing is not Certified Pre-Owned merely because it uses the phrase or shows Rolex paperwork.

Rolex reproduces a statement from founder Hans Wilsdorf on its programme page: “We would never sell a single timepiece that is not technically faultless and that does not give full and complete satisfaction.” This is a historical statement presented by Rolex, not a guarantee about the condition of every second-hand watch outside the programme.
What if the watch is not Certified Pre-Owned?
Rolex says Official Rolex Retailers and Rolex affiliates can receive watches for servicing. The process includes a watchmaker’s assessment and estimate before work, testing during service, and a two-year service guarantee after the procedure. Service may include refinishing or replacing components that no longer meet specifications. If preserving untouched vintage parts matters to you, ask what work is proposed and whether replaced components can be retained before authorizing service.
