It remains display-less smart eyewear that relies on a phone app and Meta AI features. It may suit a new buyer who specifically wants camera glasses, but Gen 1 owners should upgrade only if the longer battery life or improved video addresses a real need.
Verdict: Gen 2 improves the practical basics without changing what kind of product it is. It captures photos and video, plays audio, handles calls, and supports voice interactions, but it does not put information in your field of view or work as a standalone phone. The “bad vibes” are subjective: WIRED reviewer Boone Ashworth described disliking the app experience and feeling hesitant to wear camera glasses in public. Those concerns are worth weighing, but they are not proof of how every wearer or bystander will react.
For a new buyer, Gen 2 is a plausible choice if you want Ray-Ban-style glasses with hands-free capture and longer claimed runtime. If you own Gen 1, compare the camera and battery improvements with the price difference, your preferred fit and lenses, and your comfort with Meta’s app, AI services, and wearing a visible camera in public.
What Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 is
Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 is display-less smart eyewear for photo and video capture, calls, open-ear audio, and Meta AI interactions. WIRED described using the glasses for music playback, voice-command assistance, and live translation as well as capture.

What’s new in Gen 2?
Battery life
Meta’s September 2025 announcement claimed up to eight hours of typical-use battery life, with the included charging case providing up to 48 additional hours of charging on the go. These are manufacturer figures, not guaranteed runtime for every use pattern. Ray-Ban’s India FAQ specifies up to eight hours under moderate use and up to five hours with continuous audio streaming and voice assistance; that regional figure should not be treated as a substitute for a current local product listing.
WIRED reported that heavier use could reduce runtime to roughly five or six hours, or less with continuous high-definition recording. The practical takeaway is that recording, audio, and voice assistance can affect battery life; do not expect the typical-use claim to mean a full day of uninterrupted recording.
Video capture
Meta announced 3K Ultra HD video capture at up to 60 frames per second and said the camera offers more than twice as many pixels as the previous generation. WIRED also described a 12-megapixel camera, 3K capture, and options up to 60 frames per second. The hands-free point-of-view perspective is useful for quick moments, but it is not a replacement for a phone or dedicated action camera.

WIRED reported that recordings are limited to a maximum of three minutes at a time. Meta announced hyperlapse and slow-motion capture settings for rollout in fall 2025; check current software availability rather than assuming every mode is enabled on every pair.
Gen 1 versus Gen 2: should you upgrade?
| Decision factor | What the dossier supports | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Camera | Meta announced 3K video up to 60 fps and more than twice as many pixels as the prior generation. | Upgrade if improved hands-free video is important to you. |
| Battery | Meta claims up to eight hours of typical use; actual runtime depends on use. | Compare the claim with your own pattern of recording, audio, and voice assistance. |
| Price | Meta’s US launch starting price was $379; WIRED listed $379 at Meta and $409 at Amazon on November 2, 2025. | These are dated references, not current price promises. Check today’s local price and the difference from your Gen 1 option. |
| Product category | Gen 2 remains display-less smart glasses. | Do not upgrade expecting in-lens information or a different kind of device. |
| Fit and lenses | Meta announced Wayfarer, Skyler, and Headliner styles. Lens options and fit vary by configuration. | Compare the exact frame and lens choices available to you before ordering. |
| App, AI, and public use | The glasses rely on the Meta app and AI services; wearing a camera in public may feel uncomfortable to some people. | Consider whether that ecosystem and social trade-off suits you. |
Tom’s Guide found no compelling reason for existing Gen 1 owners to upgrade, while recognizing the better camera and longer battery. That is a reviewer’s conclusion, not a universal rule: Gen 2 is more persuasive if those specific improvements solve a problem you actually have.
What are the “bad vibes”?
WIRED reviewer Boone Ashworth described the glasses as good but said he felt hesitant to wear them in public. That is a personal review response, not evidence that all users or bystanders feel the same way. Still, a visible camera on eyewear can raise understandable questions about recording and privacy.
Tom’s Guide also raised concerns about Meta’s announced use of AI interactions for targeted advertising in the US and noted regional restrictions described in its review. The research for this article did not verify the current policy text or all regional settings, so check current official policy before drawing a definitive conclusion about your account or region.

Use camera glasses with consideration: follow rules in workplaces and venues, be mindful of people in sensitive settings, and do not assume that a recording indicator will make everyone comfortable. The available research did not establish a statistic about public attitudes toward camera glasses.
Frames, lenses, and fit
Meta announced Gen 2 in Wayfarer, Skyler, and Headliner styles. Lens and fit choices matter: WIRED noted polarized lenses on the matte-black sunglasses variant and said the transition lenses on its review pair did not darken enough for the reviewer on a sunny day. Availability varies, so check the exact frame, lens type, and fit before buying.
WIRED distinguishes Gen 2 from the more camera-focused Oakley Meta Vanguard and Meta Ray-Ban Display, which has an in-lens display. Those products are different formats, not direct equivalents; compare them only if their form and features meet your needs.
Price and buying advice
Meta announced a US starting price of $379 in 2025. WIRED listed $379 at Meta and $409 at Amazon on November 2, 2025. Treat those as dated references, not current prices: retail availability and pricing can change by date, location, frame, and lens configuration.

Who should buy Gen 2?
- Consider it as a new buyer if you specifically want hands-free point-of-view capture, open-ear audio, calls, and voice interactions in glasses.
- Consider upgrading from Gen 1 if longer battery life or improved video would make a concrete difference to how you use your glasses.
- Look elsewhere if you expect an in-lens display, standalone phone replacement, or a camera that replaces a phone or action camera.
- Think carefully if Meta’s app and AI services or wearing a visible camera in public make you uncomfortable.
FAQ
Is Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 worth it?
It can be worthwhile for a new buyer who specifically wants camera glasses with improved video and longer claimed battery life. The value depends on current local pricing, your preferred frame and lenses, and whether the phone-linked Meta features and public-camera trade-offs suit you.
Is it worth upgrading from Gen 1?
Upgrade if the improved video or battery life addresses a real need. Tom’s Guide’s review found no compelling reason for existing Gen 1 owners to upgrade, so a satisfied Gen 1 owner may prefer to keep their current pair.
How long does the battery last?
Meta claims up to eight hours of typical use and up to 48 additional hours of charging from the included case. WIRED reported roughly five or six hours under heavier use, with continuous high-definition recording potentially reducing runtime further. Actual results depend on use.

No. It is display-less smart eyewear. It does not show navigation, translation, notifications, or AI answers in the lenses.
Is the Gen 2 camera better than Gen 1?
Meta announced 3K Ultra HD video at up to 60 frames per second and more than twice as many pixels as the prior generation. Whether that improvement is worth paying for depends on how often you use the camera and the current price difference.
Are Ray-Ban Meta glasses a privacy risk?
They put a camera on eyewear, which can make some people uneasy and raises practical privacy questions about recording in public. WIRED’s reviewer described hesitating to wear them in public; that is his reported experience, not a measure of everyone’s reaction. For current details about data and AI practices, consult Meta’s official policy for your region.
