The glasses pair your spoken question with a captured image and play an answer through their speakers; newer live features can provide more continuous visual assistance where available. This is a software capability—not a new hardware launch—and access depends on your model, country, language, app and rollout status.
What “multimodal AI” means on Ray-Ban Meta glasses
Multimodal AI combines different kinds of input rather than relying only on text or speech. On these glasses, the core combination is your spoken question and an image from the glasses’ camera. Meta describes converting a spoken request to text and combining it with a camera image before sending it to its multimodal AI system (Meta’s technical description).
The glasses then play the response through open-ear speakers. The experience is audio-first: standard Ray-Ban Meta glasses do not show AI answers as overlays in your field of view. The phone and Meta’s online services are part of the experience, so this is not a fully independent AI computer.
Voice, image and live assistance are different modes
| Capability | What it does |
|---|---|
| Meta AI voice assistant | Responds to spoken requests and supports compatible functions without necessarily using the camera. |
| Meta AI with Vision, often called “Look and Ask” | Captures an image for a request and answers a question about visible text, objects or a scene. |
| Live AI or video assistance | Provides more continuous visual context during an interaction where the feature, model and market support it. |
| Live translation | Translates supported languages in supported markets; some documented language-pack functionality may work offline. |
| Meta AI app | Offers a broader phone-based AI experience and device management; it can also help review glasses interactions. |
A normal visual question does not mean the glasses permanently analyze everything in view. It is distinct from later live features, whose behavior and availability vary.

When the visual assistant arrived
The multimodal feature was added to glasses already on sale; it was not the launch of a new pair. The product and AI capabilities developed in stages:
- September 2023: Meta announced its second-generation Ray-Ban Meta glasses with voice-activated Meta AI in beta in the United States. The announced U.S. starting price was $299, and sales began October 17, 2023 (Meta’s launch announcement).
- December 2023: Meta began early access testing of features that used the glasses’ camera to describe or answer questions about visible objects. Meta cautioned that responses might not always be correct (Meta’s update).
- April 23, 2024: Meta announced a broader beta rollout of Meta AI with Vision in the United States and Canada. Translating a menu and asking about an object were among the examples (Meta’s announcement).
- July 2024 onward: Meta announced voice AI availability in the United Kingdom and Australia, followed by expansion to additional European markets. Feature sets differed by country; visual questions began rolling out to supported EU markets in 2025 (July 2024 update; EU rollout update).
- Later updates: Meta added follow-up conversations, visual questions that do not always require saying “look and,” reminders and video-based assistance. It announced Gen 2 glasses in 2025 with longer battery life and 3K video capture (2024 feature update; Gen 2 announcement).
What you can ask it to do
For a supported visual request, you can ask the assistant to read or translate a sign or menu, describe an object, or offer information about a visible plant, product, landmark or scene. You can also ask a follow-up about its response. These are examples, not guarantees: the system may misread or misidentify what the camera captures. Meta’s initial Vision announcement specifically demonstrated menu translation; later updates expanded visual questions and live assistance (April 2024 announcement; September 2024 update).
For instance, a wearer might ask, “Hey Meta, look and tell me what this sign says,” or “Hey Meta, look and describe this object.” Depending on the software and supported feature, the assistant may also handle requests to remember information such as where you parked. Live translation and continuing video assistance are separate capabilities, not automatic extensions of every still-image question.

How to try a visual question
- Pair a compatible Ray-Ban Meta model with a smartphone and install the Meta AI companion app.
- Sign in, grant the permissions needed for the functions you want, and install available app and glasses firmware updates.
- Make sure the glasses are powered on, connected and online; many AI functions rely on the phone and Meta’s services.
- With the camera lens unobstructed, say “Hey Meta, look and…” followed by a specific question—for example, “translate this menu.” Ray-Ban documents this phrase for asking the assistant to capture a photo for its response (Ray-Ban’s FAQ).
- Listen to the spoken answer. The request, image and response can be reviewed in the Meta AI app, according to Ray-Ban’s support information.
Software updates have made “look and” unnecessary for some visual questions and added conversational follow-ups, so the exact wording can vary by software version and account rollout (Meta’s feature update).
Availability, models and requirements
Meta’s feature rollouts have been country- and language-specific, and an announcement in one market does not establish availability everywhere. Voice AI, still-image questions, live video assistance and translation can each have different eligibility. Check the current Meta AI app and official support pages for your country rather than assuming every feature is enabled on every pair.
The second-generation Ray-Ban Meta line received the original visual-assistant rollout, and later generations also support Meta AI. Newer hardware can differ in battery, camera and video capabilities; a newer model does not make every feature globally available. Meta announced Gen 2 at a U.S. starting price of $379 in 2025, compared with the original line’s $299 U.S. launch price in 2023; these are historical launch prices, not a statement of current retail pricing (Gen 2 announcement; original launch announcement).

Capabilities, camera specifications, battery performance, prescription options and frame availability can differ across generations and configurations. Ray-Ban’s product page provides current model information: Ray-Ban Meta glasses.
What the camera does—and what it does not establish
For a standard visual question, the glasses capture an image associated with your request and send the relevant input for AI processing. That is not the same as an unrestricted, permanent recording of everything you see. Live AI modes can use more continuous visual context, but their availability and operation depend on the feature and market.

Image capture, AI analysis, identity recognition, data storage and bystander consent are separate matters. Ray-Ban’s FAQ says facial-recognition technology is not used for the documented AI features. That statement does not mean the glasses have no camera, that a captured image is never processed, or that privacy concerns disappear. The camera indicator light is an important signal, and people nearby may not welcome recording or analysis. Follow local laws and venue rules, and ask before capturing people in private or sensitive settings.

Accuracy and practical limits
Treat answers as suggestions to verify, not authoritative identification. The assistant may misidentify an object, plant, landmark or product, or sound certain while being wrong. Text recognition and translation can fail when lettering is small, handwritten, distant, blurred, obstructed, in low light or obscured by glare. Motion and network delays can also affect live assistance.
- Improve the input: clean and uncover the lens, face the subject steadily, move closer to small text and use better lighting.
- Use a still-image request when live assistance struggles: ask a short, specific question and give the camera time to capture a clear view.
- Check connectivity and eligibility: cloud AI and real-time features may not work without network access, and unsupported regions may still have camera or audio functions without the AI feature.
- Do not use it for high-stakes decisions: verify medical or medication questions, hazardous navigation, legal interpretations and safety-critical judgments with appropriate sources or professionals.
Meta has described downloadable language packs for limited offline translation in supported circumstances; this does not make the broader AI assistant generally available offline (Meta’s Gen 2 and translation update).
When the feature is missing or does not respond
- Check that the glasses are charged and powered on.
- Enable Bluetooth on the phone, open the Meta AI app and confirm the glasses show as connected.
- Install available app and firmware updates using the current device-management and update controls in the app; labels may change as the companion app evolves.
- Check whether the specific AI function and language are supported in your country and available to your account.
- Try “Hey Meta, look and…” with a short request in good light, with a clean, unobstructed camera lens.
- Move closer to small text or objects and avoid glare or motion. If a live request stalls, try a still-image question instead.
- If pairing remains broken, restart both the glasses and phone, then reconnect through the app.
If the assistant responds but gives a wrong description, that may be an AI error rather than a camera or pairing failure.

Is multimodal AI a reason to buy the glasses?
It is a useful addition if you want quick, hands-free visual questions or translation and are comfortable with audio answers, a paired phone and the privacy trade-offs of wearing a camera. It is not a compelling reason by itself to replace a working earlier pair: Meta AI with Vision was introduced for existing second-generation hardware, while newer generations chiefly add hardware changes such as battery and video improvements.
If comparing options, standard Ray-Ban Meta suits buyers who want ordinary-looking camera and audio glasses with AI. Gen 2 is aimed at buyers who value its announced battery and video upgrades. Oakley Meta is a sport-oriented alternative for people who prefer that frame style (Meta’s Oakley Meta announcement). Meta Ray-Ban Display is a different category for buyers who specifically want a lens display rather than audio-only answers (Meta Ray-Ban Display announcement). A phone-based visual assistant is more flexible but less hands-free; for dependable accessibility, medical or navigation support, use a purpose-built tool or qualified professional rather than treating these glasses as a substitute.
