Rebble is a community-led effort to keep Pebble watches useful and build an open ecosystem around them. Its latest located update, published March 31, 2026, reports that the Foundation has an elected board and says a third hackathon and Rebble’s role in the Pebble 2.0 world are still topics for discussion—not confirmed plans.
What is Rebble?
Pebble ceased operations in 2016. Rebble says it launched two days later to maintain and advance Pebble functionality, with Rebble Web Services restoring much of the familiar experience for watch owners. Its work now spans services and community software as well as efforts to preserve and extend the platform. Rebble
The project’s ambitions reach beyond keeping old watches running. In January 2025, Rebble described a formal nonprofit direction focused on education, embedded-systems learning, historical preservation and open-source software for public benefit. The Foundation’s March 2026 board announcement reports an elected board. The cited updates do not establish a particular tax-exempt classification. What happened to PebbleOS?
Rebble’s January 2025 update described the operating-system work as an early-stage effort, not a finished release. It said Google had made PebbleOS source available to everyone and Rebble had obtained source code for Snowy. The immediate technical priority, the post said, was concentrated work to get PebbleOS building before developing updates.

Candidate priorities reproduced in Rebble’s blog point to making microPebble more suitable as a daily driver and supporting legacy devices such as Snowy. These are stated priorities, not evidence that either effort is currently production-ready or shipping. Rebble’s January 2025 post summarized its direction this way: “We are committed to an open-source community-owned smartwatch, and these announcements bring that reality even closer.” The statement was written by Will Murphy in The future of Rebble.
Is Rebble holding another hackathon?
A third hackathon was under discussion in the board’s latest located update, but the March 31, 2026 announcement gave no date or confirmed format. Ish Ot Jr., author of Meet Your New Board of Directors, wrote: “We’re meeting again in April to further flesh out our nascent goals, including organizing our third hackathon and figuring out how Rebble best fits into the Pebble 2.0 world.” That describes prospective agenda items, not an event announcement.

The community has previously produced work quickly. In a 2023 retrospective on its 2022 hackathon, Rebble said 48 people had worked on Pebble apps after the first day and six apps were already live. Those figures describe that event’s early activity, not the expected scale or output of a future hackathon. A look back at the Rebble hackathon

Can you still use a Pebble watch?
Rebble’s stated purpose and its Rebble Web Services offering are aimed at preserving familiar Pebble functionality. That does not establish compatibility for every watch, service or software feature, and the cited updates do not confirm current build readiness for PebbleOS, Snowy or microPebble. If you own a watch, check the model-specific information on Rebble’s site rather than assuming that every device has the same support.
