2024 was the year Google made Pixel Watch the center of its smartwatch strategy while keeping Fitbit important as the health-and-fitness platform and tracker brand. Pixel Watch 3 was the defining launch, older Pixel Watches gained substantial features, and Fitbit continued through software updates, focused trackers and the child-oriented Ace LTE. The result was strategic consolidation—not the disappearance of Fitbit.
Pixel Watch 3 was Google’s defining wearable launch
Google announced Pixel Watch 3 on August 13, 2024, and released it on September 10. It remained a Wear OS smartwatch, but its strongest differentiator was the Fitbit health technology built into the experience. Google’s announcement is at Google’s Pixel Watch 3 announcement.
| Model | Launch price | Key hardware change |
|---|---|---|
| 41mm Bluetooth/Wi-Fi | $349.99 | Smaller case option with a brighter, larger-use display |
| 41mm LTE | $449.99 | Cellular connectivity; 20% faster charging than Pixel Watch 2, according to Google |
| 45mm Bluetooth/Wi-Fi | $399.99 | New size with 40% more screen area than Pixel Watch 2, according to Google |
| 45mm LTE | $499.99 | New larger case with a battery stated as 35% larger than before |
Both sizes reached up to 2,000 nits of brightness. Google said the 45mm display provided 40% more screen area and the 41mm display 10% more than Pixel Watch 2. Battery Saver was rated for up to 36 hours under Google’s test conditions and default Battery Saver settings; actual endurance varies with features, usage, environment and settings. These are manufacturer figures, not universal real-world results.
Pixel Watch 3 also tied together Google services such as Maps, Wallet, Google Home, YouTube Music, Pixel-phone integration and emergency-safety tools. It works with most phones running Android 10 or newer and requires a Google Account, the Pixel Watch app and internet access. It is not an iPhone-compatible alternative to Apple Watch. LTE models additionally require a compatible carrier, activated plan and supported country.

Fitbit became the Pixel Watch’s health layer
Pixel Watch 3’s value was not just a brighter screen or a second case size. Fitbit supplied the recovery, training and coaching framework that made Google’s watch more distinctive.
Recovery and training metrics
- Daily Readiness estimates recovery using factors including resting heart rate, heart-rate variability and recent sleep.
- Cardio Load estimates cardiovascular exertion from activities and the day as a whole.
- Target Load turns recent Cardio Load and readiness into a personalized daily training target.
- Fitbit Morning Brief combines sleep, readiness, Cardio Load, exercise goals, weather and out-of-range measurements in one morning summary.
Google described these capabilities in its Daily Readiness, Cardio Load and Target Load explainer. They are wellness and training estimates, not medical diagnoses or substitutes for clinical testing. Availability can depend on device, account, country and Fitbit membership.
Running tools
Pixel Watch 3 added Workout Builder, real-time run guidance and more advanced motion sensing. Runners could review cadence, stride length, stride height and ground-contact time, then see running-form analysis, a running dashboard and personal records in the Fitbit app. That made it more compelling for structured training than earlier Pixel Watches, even though recording a metric is not the same as receiving medical or professional coaching.
Loss of Pulse Detection
Google introduced Loss of Pulse Detection, which could identify an apparent loss-of-pulse event. If the watch confirmed the event and the wearer did not respond, it could automatically call emergency services and provide location and contextual information. Google’s feature page is the authoritative description: Pixel Watch 3.

This is not a guarantee that an emergency will be detected and it is not a general-purpose heart-attack detector. Calling depends on connectivity, location, regulatory approval and the feature’s operating conditions. Initial availability was limited by country and regulatory status.
Older Pixel Watches received meaningful updates
Google did not treat Pixel Watch 3 as the only 2024 story. A March feature drop extended useful functions to the first-generation Pixel Watch, including Pace Training, Heart Zone Training, automatic workout start and stop for supported activities, Fitbit Relax breathing exercises, public-transit directions in Google Maps and a redesigned workout interface with larger text and brighter colors. Details appear in Google’s March 2024 Pixel Watch feature drop.
Pixel Watch software timeline
- January: Pixel Buds Pro audio switching added Pixel Watch support, according to the year-end recap.
- March: The original watch received the training, breathing, workout-control and transit features listed above.
- April: Google added a vibration-based way to tell the time.
- June: Car Crash Detection reached Pixel Watch 2, while Fall Detection improved bicycle-related fall detection.
- Throughout the year: Google expanded Google Home Favorites controls, PayPal in Google Wallet, charging behavior and notifications.
- October: An individual Contacts Tile and Gmail emoji reactions arrived on the wrist.
- December: Older watches gained a fully charged notification and updated charging screen; Pixel Watch 2 gained Nest Cam and Doorbell live streams. Cardio Load and Target Load also became available without the earlier limitation on Pixel Watches and modern Fitbit devices, according to the year-end recap.
The chronology is documented by 9to5Google’s 2024 Pixel Watch and Fitbit recap. Rollouts varied by model, region, software version and account, so an announced feature was not necessarily available immediately to every owner.
Wear OS 5 improved the interface, then exposed a rollout risk
Pixel Watch 3 debuted with Wear OS 5, which brought a grid-style app launcher and a media-output switcher. Google began rolling Wear OS 5 and Recorder to first-generation Pixel Watch devices in late September 2024.

- Get up to 30 hours of battery life or up to 48 hours in Battery Saver mode[3]; plus, the new side charging dock gives you 15 hours of battery in 15 minutes or less[7]
- Train smarter with 40+ exercise modes and real-time stats on your wrist[8]; and with high-precision dual-frequency GPS, you get more accurate route tracking on runs and hikes[1]
The older-watch rollout was subsequently pulled after reports that some devices were soft-bricked. That affected some users, not every watch, but it was a significant software-quality event. A feature announcement therefore did not guarantee a smooth or simultaneous upgrade, and owners considering a 2024 recap should distinguish the initial rollout from the final software state. The pulled rollout is covered in the year-end timeline.
Fitbit’s own hardware remained active, but its role changed
Fitbit did not disappear in 2024. Google continued updates for Sense 2, Versa 4, Charge 6 and Inspire 3, including a larger July update. It also launched Fitbit Ace LTE, a child-focused LTE watch designed to connect children with trusted contacts without a smartphone, while adding activity tracking, parental controls and a durable design.
What each Fitbit device represented
- Sense 2: A health-focused Fitbit smartwatch for buyers prioritizing wellness, sleep and stress features in a Fitbit form factor.
- Versa 4: A workout-oriented Fitbit smartwatch with broad exercise support, positioned between a tracker and a full Wear OS watch.
- Charge 6: A focused tracker with built-in GPS and Google Maps, Google Wallet and YouTube Music support.
- Inspire 3: A simpler, low-profile tracker emphasizing basic monitoring and long battery life.
- Ace LTE: A connected wearable for children and family communication.
Google’s product positioning is shown on the Google Store Fitbit page. Fitbit Labs, Insights Explorer, Sleep Labs, Health Connect integration, manual body-temperature logging through Pixel Thermometer integration and AFib-data sharing with a doctor were also reported during the year. These were experimental, staged or availability-dependent features rather than a guarantee that every Fitbit owner received them at once.
The strategic distinction became clearer: Pixel Watch handled full smartwatch functionality, while Fitbit supplied health tracking, coaching, sleep and recovery tools, plus focused devices. That is consolidation and repositioning, not evidence that Fitbit ceased to exist as a brand.

What buyers should have chosen at the end of 2024
These recommendations describe the 2024 lineup, not a current 2026 buying guide.
| User | Best-fit direction |
|---|---|
| Wants a full Android smartwatch | Pixel Watch 3 |
| Wants a focused fitness tracker | Charge 6 |
| Wants Fitbit health features in a watch form factor | Sense 2 |
| Wants a simpler workout smartwatch | Versa 4 |
| Wants a child-focused connected wearable | Ace LTE |
| Wants maximum battery life and basic tracking | Inspire 3 |
Pixel Watch 3 or Charge 6?
Choose Pixel Watch 3 for apps, notifications, Maps, Wallet, Google integration, a larger display, advanced running tools and optional LTE. Choose Charge 6 for a smaller, lighter tracker, longer battery life than a daily-charging smartwatch, built-in GPS and core Fitbit tracking with less emphasis on apps.
Pixel Watch 3 or Sense 2 or Versa 4?
Pixel Watch 3 was the stronger choice for Google smartwatch functions and the newest Wear OS experience. Sense 2 remained relevant for Fitbit-first buyers who wanted a health-focused form factor, while Versa 4 suited users seeking a simpler workout watch. Neither Sense 2 nor Versa 4 was a new 2024 flagship competitor; both were older products receiving updates.
Subscriptions, compatibility and health limits
Some features require the Fitbit mobile app and/or a paid subscription. Separate hardware features, free app functions and premium coaching or insights when comparing products; availability can vary by country, language, device and account. LTE also requires a supported carrier and activated plan. Google’s setup requirements are documented at Google Pixel Watch support.

- The Google Pixel Watch 3 is designed for performance, with advanced fitness from Fitbit[1,2]; the 45mm screen is twice as bright and 40% larger than before, making it easier to see your stats and info[1]
- Maximize your performance with advanced running features; build custom run workouts and get real-time guidance and advanced form tracking[3]
- Enhance your run routine with Fitbit Premium; Google AI uses your goals, past runs, and readiness to power personalized run recommendations[3]
- Know what your body is ready for each day with readiness; it uses sleep, resting heart rate, and heart rate variability to show if you’re ready to take on a workout or prioritize recovery[3]
- Cardio load measures how hard your heart works so you can see how hard you’ve pushed; compare trends to see if you’re under- or over-training[3]
ECG and AFib-related features are not available everywhere. Fit, motion, skin contact and activity can affect wearable measurements. Readiness, stress and load scores are estimates intended to support wellness and training decisions, not diagnosis.
What 2024 meant for Google and Fitbit
Google’s 2024 wearable strategy was a deliberate split of responsibilities. Pixel Watch 3 became the premium smartwatch flagship, with the Google ecosystem and Fitbit-powered health features in one device. Older Pixel Watches received more support than a simple annual hardware cycle would suggest, although the Wear OS 5 rollout showed that software delivery remained a risk. Fitbit continued through Charge 6, existing device updates and Ace LTE, but its standalone smartwatch identity became less prominent.
For owners, the practical message was mixed: more Google integration and richer health coaching, alongside uncertainty about how much future Fitbit hardware would remain independent. The evidence supports a transition toward Fitbit as Google’s health and fitness platform—not a 2024 shutdown of Fitbit.
