The Richard Mille RM 53-01 Tourbillon Pablo Mac Donough was built around a specific problem: protecting a mechanical movement in polo, a sport marked by hard impacts. Its defining features are a movement suspended on braided steel cables and a laminated sapphire crystal that Richard Mille says can crack on impact without shattering. The 2018 model was limited to 30 pieces; the $900,000 figure reported at launch is historical, not a current price.
How the RM 53-01’s cable-suspended movement works
Rather than fixing the calibre directly to the case in the usual way, Richard Mille describes a two-part baseplate. A peripheral plate attaches to the case, while a central plate carries the calibre’s wheels and winding mechanism. Two braided steel cables connect the plates, creating the watch’s distinctive suspended architecture.
According to Richard Mille, each cable is 0.27 mm in diameter. Together they follow a three-dimensional route through 10 pulleys and are held by four tensioners. A watchmaker adjusts cable tension using spline screws. The brand’s design intent is to let the central plate and movement absorb shocks while remaining balanced; this is the architecture, not a guarantee that the watch is impervious to damage. Fratello quoted Salvador Arbona, Richard Mille’s Technical Director for Movements, saying the pulleys provide “optimal shock absorption to more than 5,000 g’s.” That figure is a reported technical claim from the brand’s movement director, not an independently documented test result in the cited coverage. Richard Mille’s RM 53-01 page does not give a g-force rating. The earlier RM 053 has its own impact-related claims, but those belong to a different watch and should not be applied to the RM 53-01. What makes the crystal different?
The case uses Carbon TPT, while the front crystal is a separate laminated construction developed with sapphire specialist Stettler. Richard Mille describes it as two sheets of sapphire with a thin polyvinyl film between them, plus anti-reflective and UV coatings. The brand says that after a strong impact the crystal may crack but will not shatter. That is Richard Mille’s stated protective behavior, not a claim that the crystal cannot break. The following figures were published by Hodinkee in 2018, so treat them as launch-era specifications rather than a fresh confirmation of current technical data.

Hodinkee’s January 15, 2018 introduction lists the technical specifications. Its February 1, 2018 hands-on reports the same case dimensions and describes the watch as large but light; that is the author’s subjective impression, not a published weight measurement.
Case, display, and straps
The RM 53-01’s large, tonneau-shaped Carbon TPT case frames a view of the suspended mechanism beneath the laminated sapphire. Its display is deliberately spare: hours and minutes alongside the tourbillon. Hodinkee’s 2018 hands-on reports two strap options: vented blue silicone rubber or fabric with a Velcro fastening. The article’s description of its scale and feel reflects the author’s experience, not a measurement of mass.

How the RM 53-01 differs from the RM 053
The RM 53-01 is not simply a renamed version of the RM 053. Richard Mille dates the earlier model to 2012 and describes a different protective approach: an armored titanium-carbide case with two raised viewing arcs or windows, and a different display arrangement. For the 2018 RM 53-01, the visual emphasis shifts to the cable-suspended movement visible beneath laminated sapphire. These are differences in architecture, visibility, case material, and stated protection strategy—not grounds to transfer one model’s specifications or impact claims to the other. Hodinkee reported a $900,000 announced price in its January 2018 coverage and described the 30-piece watch as “Coming Soon.” That is launch-era price and availability information only. What the hands-on coverage establishes
Stephen Pulvirent’s February 2018 Hodinkee article is the available hands-on account. It discusses the watch’s scale, materials, and straps, but it does not provide a measured weight or establish present-day market availability. The more technical details about the cable system and laminated crystal come from Richard Mille’s model description; the shock figure is Arbona’s statement as quoted by Fratello.
