For most buyers, Rolex is the more liquid and easier-to-price choice; Richard Mille can command a much higher absolute price, but resale and insurance depend far more on the exact reference, condition and provenance. Morgan Stanley Research/WatchCharts reported 12.3% value retention for 133 in-production Rolex watches at prices dated July 1, 2025. No comparable, representative Richard Mille brand-wide percentage was published in the same evidence, so treating either brand as a guaranteed investment is misleading.
Insurance is not priced by logo alone. Insurers use current replacement or agreed value, location, collection size, security, claims history, travel and whether unexplained loss is covered. Published US illustrations show $89 per year for an $8,100 Rolex Submariner and $145 for a $13,150 Rolex Daytona; those figures are not Richard Mille quotes. This guide explains how to compare the two brands, secure them and obtain a defensible policy.

What is the practical difference between Richard Mille and Rolex?
Rolex has a broad, active resale market with many dealers, auction records and readily available reference data. Richard Mille trades in a thinner specialist market where a particular case material, limited production run, service record and original accessories can change the price dramatically. That makes Rolex simpler to price and sell, while Richard Mille requires more documentation and a buyer who understands the reference.
| Factor | Rolex | Richard Mille |
|---|---|---|
| Buyer pool | Large international network of dealers, collectors and enthusiasts. | Smaller specialist pool; the right reference may need a specialist dealer or auction. |
| Published value data | Morgan Stanley Research/WatchCharts reported +12.3% value retention across 133 in-production watches, prices as of July 1, 2025. | No current, representative brand-wide retention percentage was published in the available evidence. |
| Price transparency | Many completed sales and dealer listings make reference-level comparisons easier. | Fewer comparable transactions; asking prices can differ substantially from completed sales. |
| Provenance effect | Box, papers and service history matter, but many independent service options exist. | Serial-linked warranty and service records, factory documentation and original condition can materially affect value. |
| Service approach | Five-year international guarantee on new watches bought from Official Retailers; theft and loss are excluded. | Richard Mille describes a three-year service recommendation, serial-linked records and specialist escalation for complex work. |
| Insurance difficulty | Usually straightforward once current value and security are documented. | Potentially more underwriting questions because replacement values and specialist repair routes are higher and less standardized. |
Which holds value better, Richard Mille or Rolex?
There is no defensible single answer at brand level. Rolex has the stronger measurable liquidity signal, while a Richard Mille’s result is highly reference-specific. Compare the exact watch, not the badge.

What the Rolex data actually shows
Morgan Stanley Research/WatchCharts defines value retention as the secondary-market premium or discount to retail. Its July 1, 2025 table lists Rolex at +12.3% value retention across 133 in-production watches, with average retail price of $28,027 and average market price of $27,111. The figure is an aggregate snapshot, not a promise that every Rolex sells above retail or that an owner will realize a 12.3% profit after tax, dealer margin, servicing and insurance.
Other datasets illustrate how the answer changes with methodology. BriteCo’s appraisal dataset covering 2019 through June 2026 reports a Rolex median sales price of $10,081 and a median appraised replacement value of $13,900. Bob’s Watches reports a $12,495 median across its own Rolex sales from July 2025 through June 2026, with model medians of $30,595 for Daytona, $18,595 for GMT-Master II and $14,495 for Submariner. These are dealer or appraisal figures, not official retail prices and not interchangeable measures.

Richard Mille’s official pre-owned program began in 2015 and uses approved retailers and factory-trained watchmakers. Watches are restored to original condition and supplied with a certificate of authenticity and a 24-month international warranty. That process can support a provenance premium, but it does not establish a universal resale percentage for the brand.
Two Richard Mille watches with the same broad collection name can differ in movement, case material, production year, edition size, complication, wear and service history. A discontinued limited reference may attract a specialist premium; another may take longer to sell or require a price concession. Use recent completed transactions and dealer bids rather than an online asking price.
How to estimate your likely net proceeds
- Identify the exact reference and serial-linked history. Record case material, movement, production year, dial, complications and any factory or authorized-service work.
- Gather at least three recent completed sales. Separate auction results, dealer purchases and private asking prices; they represent different stages of the market.
- Obtain a dealer bid. A bid is closer to realizable proceeds than a public listing, but includes the dealer’s margin and risk.
- Subtract friction. Include servicing, authentication, shipping, seller fees, taxes and the time value of waiting for a buyer.
- Compare net proceeds with your purchase cost. Retail price, market price, dealer bid and net cash are four different numbers.
Is a Richard Mille worth more than a Rolex?
In absolute dollars, many Richard Mille references cost more than most Rolex models, but “worth more” depends on the definition. A high retail price does not guarantee a higher resale price, faster sale or lower ownership cost.
Also popular on Amazon
| Meaning of “worth more” | What to examine |
|---|---|
| Purchase price | Current price for the exact reference and configuration. |
| Market value | Recent completed sales for the same reference, not a different case or movement. |
| Liquidity | Number of credible buyers and expected time to sale. |
| Net resale | Dealer bid or private-sale proceeds after fees, taxes and required service. |
| Replacement value | What it would cost to source an equivalent watch today, which can exceed your purchase price. |
| Ownership value | Enjoyment, rarity, wearability, service access and documentation quality. |
Rolex generally wins on buyer-pool breadth and price transparency. Richard Mille may win for a collector who values a particular technical construction, rarity or documented provenance and accepts a thinner resale market.

Are Richard Mille watches more likely to be stolen?
There is no reliable per-watch theft-rate comparison in the available evidence. Lockton’s 2024 review says Rolex accounted for 44% of watches listed as lost or stolen with The Watch Register and also lists Richard Mille among targeted prestige brands. A 44% share of reported listings is not a probability that any individual Rolex will be stolen, nor does it prove Rolex is riskier than Richard Mille.
Visibility, how often you wear the watch, travel routes, public behavior, storage and local crime conditions are more useful risk indicators than brand alone. A conspicuous Richard Mille can attract attention; a common-looking Rolex can be easier to identify and resell. Treat both as high-value property.
Security controls that reduce exposure
- Keep serial numbers, photographs, purchase records and appraisals in an encrypted or otherwise protected inventory.
- Do not post a complete serial number or predictable travel schedule publicly.
- Use a certified, cash-rated safe at home when the collection value warrants it. Allianz recommends a certified safe for collections above CHF 100,000.
- While travelling, place the watch in a locked hotel safe when it is not being worn; Allianz specifically recommends locked hotel storage.
- Ask the insurer whether an alarm, monitored system, safe certification or minimum storage period is required.
- Wear the watch discreetly in unfamiliar areas and avoid leaving it in a vehicle, checked baggage or an unattended hotel room.
What documentation helps after a theft?
Lockton reports that insurers commonly ask for serial numbers, accredited valuations and adequately cash-rated safes. Richard Mille’s digital warranty system can record authenticity, transfer ownership and report a watch lost or stolen; preserving official service records therefore helps both a claim and a later recovery. Keep copies separately from the watch and update them after a sale, service or ownership transfer.
How much does it cost to insure a Richard Mille?
No universal Richard Mille premium was published in the available evidence. The insurer will quote the exact reference, current insured value, country, address, security, claims history, travel pattern, deductible and whether unexplained loss is included. A very high replacement value and specialist repair pathway can increase the premium, but only an underwriter can price those factors.

Published Rolex illustrations
| Watch example | Published value | Illustrative annual premium | Qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rolex Submariner | $8,100 MSRP | $89 | Hodinkee/Chubb published US illustration, accessed 2026; not a quote for every owner. |
| Rolex Daytona | $13,150 MSRP | $145 | Hodinkee/Chubb published US illustration, accessed 2026; geography, policy terms and underwriting apply. |
These examples show why a Richard Mille quote cannot be inferred by multiplying a Rolex rate. A watch insured for several hundred thousand dollars, with worldwide travel and loss coverage, is a different risk from a locally worn watch insured only for theft.
What an insurer normally needs
PWI says agreed-value cover starts with a current valuation rather than simply the original receipt. Expect requests for proof of ownership, an appraisal or receipt, storage details, wearing habits and home-security measures. For watches valued at $100,000 or more, Hodinkee says an appraisal is needed. Allianz notes that premiums rise with watch value, collection size and optional cover such as loss.
How should I insure a Rolex or Richard Mille?
Schedule the watch at current replacement or agreed value, then confirm exactly what events and locations the policy covers. Do not assume a standard homeowners policy is sufficient: Hodinkee says such policies may cap watches or jewelry at $5,000 or less.
- Get a current valuation. Use a qualified appraiser or a documented market source appropriate to the reference. Replacement value may differ from the price you paid.
- Choose the coverage basis. Ask whether the policy pays agreed value, replacement cost or market value, and how depreciation or a hard-to-source replacement is handled.
- List covered events. Confirm theft, burglary, robbery, accidental damage, disappearance, mysterious loss, water damage and damage during servicing.
- Check geography and travel rules. Ask whether worldwide cover applies automatically, whether a trip length limit exists and whether a hotel safe is mandatory.
- Set the deductible and security conditions. A lower deductible generally costs more. Confirm safe ratings, alarms and required storage when the watch is not worn.
- Submit ownership evidence. Provide the serial number, photographs, receipt, appraisal, box and papers, service records and any transfer documents.
- Refresh the schedule. Revalue when market prices move, after a major service or at the insurer’s stated interval. A stale value can leave you underinsured.
Hodinkee describes $0-deductible all-risk cover and says a policy may pay market value up to 150% of insured value subject to policy limits. Treat those as features of that published program, not a universal insurance standard.
Do I need a safe for a Rolex or Richard Mille?
You may not need a safe for a single, modestly valued watch under every policy, but a certified safe becomes increasingly important as value and collection size rise. Allianz’s specific guidance is a certified safe for collections above CHF 100,000 and locked hotel storage while travelling. Your insurer can impose stricter requirements.

Choosing home storage
- Verify the safe’s certification and cash rating with the insurer before purchase.
- Anchor the safe as the manufacturer specifies and place it away from obvious sight lines.
- Use a separate watch box or travel case inside the safe to prevent scratches and keep straps, papers and tools together.
- Document who has access and review alarm or monitoring requirements.
What service and authenticity differences affect ownership cost?
Richard Mille describes a three-year service recommendation and a “3+2” warranty concept; it also advises checking water resistance annually when a watch is regularly immersed. Its after-sales information says local watchmakers handle more than 80% of problems, while complex work is escalated, and that watches are tested to 30, 50, 100 or 300 metres of water resistance depending on model. Service cost depends on complexity, so obtain a written estimate for the exact reference.
Richard Mille’s official service and pre-owned systems tie warranty and service history to the serial number. That supports authenticity and resale confidence, but missing records can create both a valuation discount and additional authentication expense. The official pre-owned route includes factory-trained restoration, a certificate of authenticity and a 24-month international warranty.
Rolex provides a five-year international guarantee on new watches bought from Official Retailers. The guarantee excludes theft, loss, misuse and non-genuine modifications. Rolex’s larger service ecosystem can make routine work easier to source, but independent work or modifications may affect warranty or buyer confidence; keep all invoices and confirm the effect before proceeding.

Use this checklist for the exact watch under consideration:
- Reference, serial and production year.
- Case and bracelet material, movement and complications.
- Originality of dial, hands, bezel, clasp and stones.
- Condition, polishing history and photographs of wear.
- Box, papers, warranty card, certificates and service invoices.
- Recent completed sales, current dealer bid and estimated time to sale.
- Current replacement or agreed value for insurance.
- Premium, deductible, loss/theft scope and worldwide travel terms.
- Required safe, alarm and storage conditions.
- Expected service interval, authorized providers and likely complexity.
If a seller cannot provide a coherent serial-linked history, pause the transaction. A low asking price can reflect missing provenance, non-original parts, overdue service or an insurance and resale problem rather than a bargain.

Which brand is the better choice for different buyers?
Choose Rolex when liquidity is the priority
Rolex is the practical default if you want many potential buyers, more transparent reference pricing and a simpler path to a dealer bid. The available market data is broader, although it still does not guarantee a profit.
Choose Richard Mille when the specific watch is the priority
Richard Mille can make sense when you understand the reference, value its construction or rarity, and are comfortable with specialist servicing, higher documentation demands and a narrower resale audience. Buy the individual watch on evidence, not on a brand-level return assumption.

Choose neither as a guaranteed investment
Retail premiums, auction headlines and online asking prices can obscure fees, taxes, service and insurance. Treat appreciation as uncertain and buy only if the ownership experience remains worthwhile without a favorable resale outcome.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I insure a pre-owned Richard Mille without the original receipt?
Often, but the insurer will need alternative proof of ownership and a current valuation. Provide serial photographs, purchase documentation, an accredited appraisal and any official service or authentication records; acceptance and limits vary by insurer and country.
Does a factory service automatically increase a watch’s resale price?
It can improve buyer confidence and reduce concerns about near-term repair, but the cost is not necessarily recovered dollar for dollar. The effect depends on the reference, originality, service quality and whether the market values an untouched example more highly.
Should I insure for what I paid or what the watch costs today?
Use the policy’s required current replacement or agreed-value basis, not an outdated purchase price. If the market has risen, insuring only the original receipt can leave a shortfall after a total loss.

How do I check whether a stolen watch has been reported?
Ask an authorized brand service center or reputable specialist to verify the serial and documentation, and retain a written result. Richard Mille’s digital warranty system can record a loss or theft report, so transfer and ownership records should be updated promptly.
