It is not a perpetual calendar: its RD840 movement shows those two calendar indications, without the moonphase and additional perpetual-calendar functions found in a different Excalibur model.
What does the biretrograde calendar show?
Two hands sweep across separate arcs on the dial: one indicates the day of the week and the other the date. At the end of each scale, a retrograde hand snaps back to its starting point to begin the next cycle. The display gives the watch its name and makes the calendar functions central to the dial rather than placing them in conventional windows.
“Biretrograde” describes those two returning hands; it does not mean the watch tracks every calendar irregularity. The RD840 is a day-date movement, not a perpetual calendar.
Is RDDBEX1179 a perpetual calendar?
No. The title watch uses the automatic RD840 and displays day and date. The similarly named Excalibur Biretrograde Perpetual Calendar is a separate model with the RD850, perpetual-calendar indications and a moonphase. The distinction matters when comparing specifications or interpreting claims about how long a calendar remains correct without adjustment.

The FHH page describes its RD850 perpetual-calendar model as continuing to show the correct date until 2100 and its moonphase as requiring no adjustment for 122 years. Those claims belong to that separate watch, not to the RD840 day-date model.
Case, dial and wearing details
Pink-gold case and water resistance
Roger Dubuis specifies an 18K pink-gold case measuring 40 mm across and rates it at 10 bar (100 m) water resistance. The official listing gives no case-thickness figure in the inspected specifications, so thickness claims should be treated as source-dependent rather than as a confirmed brand measurement.

A layered dial with paired arcs
The silver-plated, satin-brushed dial is built in seven layers. Mother-of-pearl appears at 12 and 6, framing the two calendar arcs; pink-gold display elements and skeletonized hands complete the layout. The symmetry makes the two retrograde indications easy to distinguish as a pair, while the layered construction gives the dial depth.
Strap and clasp
The watch is listed with a brown calf-leather strap, Roger Dubuis’s Quick Release System and a pink-gold folding clasp. Quick release allows the strap to be detached using the system provided, but the listing does not specify compatibility with third-party straps.

RD840 movement and specifications
The automatic in-house RD840 is Poinçon de Genève certified. Roger Dubuis states a 60-hour power reserve, 40 jewels and a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour. The brand lists 244 pieces; Fratello reports 240 components, a different count that should not be silently substituted for the official figure.

Published figures are not completely consistent. Wempe lists a 48-hour reserve and 11.9 mm case height, while Fratello reports a 60-hour reserve and 11.25 mm thickness. Roger Dubuis specifies a 60-hour reserve but does not state case thickness in the inspected listing. For the reserve, the brand’s figure is the clearest manufacturer specification; thickness remains unconfirmed by that listing.
Why retrograde matters to this model
Roger Dubuis says its namesake co-patented a retrograde mechanism in 1989, which became the basis for the Maison’s first watch. The brand presents the current Excalibur as a return to the founders’ signature biretrograde display. Fratello’s 2025 hands-on connects the design language to the earlier Hommage Bi-Retrograde Perpetual Calendar, which added month, leap-year and moonphase indications. The current RD840 version keeps the visual idea but uses a simpler day-date calendar.

There is no single verified current price across regions in the available listings. Fratello reported launch-era pricing of €64,000 and CHF 56,500 in its May 17, 2025 hands-on. Wempe displayed $65,500 excluding tax and “Available” when checked on October 8, 2026; that is a retailer and date-specific snapshot, not a universal price or a guarantee of present inventory.
