Its titanium case combines black DLC-treated titanium and red aluminium accents; contemporaneous launch coverage reported a 14.95 mm thickness and a planned 188-piece run. Those specifications explain the watch’s proposition, but they cannot answer the practical questions a hands-on review should: how clearly its indications read, how the open architecture looks in person, and how its size wears. No direct inspection or timing test is established here, so those impressions are not presented as firsthand findings.
What is the Excalibur Spider Double Flying Tourbillon?
Roger Dubuis introduced the Excalibur Spider Skeleton Double Flying Tourbillon in 2015. The Fondation Haute Horlogerie lists a 47 mm case, an open dial, a sapphire caseback and a rubber strap, with titanium, black DLC-treated titanium and red aluminium in the construction. The Foundation describes the mechanism as a manual-winding double flying tourbillon with hours and minutes, and seconds indicated on the tourbillons. Fondation Haute Horlogerie’s model reference is the clearest source for the model’s launch year and broad specification.
The name appears in launch coverage as both “Excalibur Spider Double Flying Tourbillon” and “Excalibur Spider Skeleton Double Flying Tourbillon.” Time+Tide identifies reference DBEX0481. For a specific watch, match the reference and configuration against its documentation rather than assuming every example or related Excalibur shares identical details.
Design: skeletonization beyond the movement
The openworked treatment is the defining visual idea: launch descriptions extend the skeletonization beyond the movement to the flange and case architecture. Monochrome’s January 2015 report describes the triple-lug Excalibur case, a skeletonized flange, a red aluminium container and crown, and bezel numerals engraved at ten-minute intervals. It also compares the forms of the tourbillon cages to Celtic crosses. These are launch-era descriptions, not a substitute for seeing how the layered construction reads in person. Monochrome’s launch coverage supplies those design details.

- Super sweat and corrosion resistance: No fear of sweat and seawater erosion when swimming or working out With a special adapter, it is seamlessly connected with the watch.
- Shock absorption and impact resistance: The built-in buffer layer reduces the risk of the dial being bumped
- Sweat-wicking groove structure: Air convection design
- Sweat-wicking groove structure: Air convection design makes it refreshing and non-sticky to wear in summer

That much openness can make visual organization a real test: a prospective wearer should check whether the hands and indications stand out against the movement rather than infer legibility from photographs. The available descriptions establish the design intent, not how quickly the watch can be read indoors, outside or in low light.
Movement: two flying tourbillons, manual winding
The watch is manually wound and uses two flying tourbillons. Monochrome reported that both cages make one rotation per minute. The Foundation describes hours and minutes, with seconds indicated on the tourbillons. In practical terms, this is a conspicuous display of mechanical architecture as well as a timekeeping mechanism; the sources do not provide a model-specific measured accuracy result.

Do not transfer specifications from Roger Dubuis’s current RD108 material to this 2015 Spider. The brand’s current RD108SQ page lists a 319-component, 32-jewel movement with a 72-hour power reserve, while its current Excalibur Double Tourbillon Cobalt page discusses two tourbillons linked by a differential and Poinçon de Genève certification. Those pages describe later RD108-family context, not confirmed specifications for the Spider reviewed here. Roger Dubuis’s RD108SQ specification and the current Excalibur Double Tourbillon Cobalt page should therefore not be used to assign a reserve, component count, differential architecture or certification to DBEX0481 without reference-specific documentation.
Case size, materials and wear questions
The Foundation lists a 47 mm diameter; Monochrome’s launch report gives the thickness as 14.95 mm. Those are substantial dimensions, and the openworked case, rubber strap and contrasting titanium, black DLC-treated titanium and red aluminium give the watch a sportier visual vocabulary than a conventional dress-watch presentation. Dimensions alone cannot establish how it will sit on a particular wrist or whether it remains comfortable through a full day.

- Fit: assess the 47 mm diameter and 14.95 mm thickness on the intended wrist, including under a cuff if that matters.
- Legibility: check the hands and indications in indoor, outdoor and dim conditions.
- Depth: view the openworked movement and case from several angles, not only straight on.
- Strap: the Foundation identifies a rubber strap; strap feel, clasp arrangement and security should be checked on the particular example.
No controlled comparison with rival watches is established by the cited sources, so claims that it is thinner, clearer or more wearable than another double-tourbillon model would require evidence beyond the specifications listed here.

Monochrome reported a planned production run of 188 pieces in 2015. That is a launch-era production figure, not evidence of how many watches remain available today. Time+Tide reported an Australian retail price of $380,000 in its 2015 article. This is a historical Australian publication figure—not a current asking price, a resale valuation or a price that can be applied to another market. Time+Tide’s 2015 article names reference DBEX0481 and gives that price context.

A buyer considering an example should verify its reference, configuration, provenance and condition with the seller and relevant documentation rather than use the 2015 retail figure as a valuation.
Verdict: a technically theatrical Spider, with key ownership questions still personal
The launch-era record makes the watch’s identity clear: a 47 mm titanium-based Excalibur Spider, aggressively skeletonized, accented in red aluminium, manually wound and organized around two one-minute flying tourbillon cages. It is an unusually explicit display of movement architecture. Whether that openness translates into satisfying legibility, visual coherence and wearable proportions depends on direct inspection; the published specifications cannot settle those questions. Felix Scholz of Time+Tide offered the editorial opinion that “Everyone’s doing skeleton watches these days. Few are doing them as well as Roger Dubuis.” That is a reviewer’s assessment, not a manufacturer claim or a measured comparison.
