The Rolex Datejust ref. 1601 and Cartier Santos Galbée XL ref. 2823 are very different vintage watches: the 1601 is a round, classic Datejust, while the Galbée XL is a square watch with an integrated bracelet and exposed bezel screws. Choose by how each design and bracelet fit your wrist, then judge the specific watch by originality, condition, service evidence and price—not brand reputation alone.

How the designs differ
Rolex Datejust 1601: a traditional round watch
The 1601 belongs to the classic Datejust formula: a round case with a date window, often seen with a fluted bezel, Jubilee bracelet and pie-pan dial. Those familiar details are not a guarantee that a particular vintage watch still has its original parts. Replacements, modifications and later service components are possible, so inspect the actual example rather than relying on reference-level descriptions.
The Datejust family began in 1945 as an automatic, waterproof chronometer wristwatch with the date displayed at 3 o’clock, according to Rolex’s model history. That is family history, not evidence that a decades-old ref. 1601 remains water-resistant today.

Cartier Santos Galbée XL: a square case and integrated bracelet
The Galbée XL has a more architectural look: a square case, visible bezel screws and a bracelet that flows directly from the case. Cartier traces the Santos design to 1904, when Louis Cartier responded to aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont’s need to read the time while flying. The Galbée XL is a later model, not the original 1904 watch. Cartier’s account appears on its Santos style page; Fratello’s Galbée XL article covers the later reference.
Which one will fit your wrist better?
Do not compare these watches by diameter alone. A round case and a square case occupy the wrist differently, and an integrated bracelet can drape differently from a conventional bracelet. The Galbée XL is reported at 32 mm across and 45 mm lug-to-lug; the cited ref. 1601 coverage does not provide a directly comparable measurement. Try both on if possible, and pay attention to the full case span, how the bracelet bends around the wrist, and whether the watch feels balanced.

Movement, date setting and everyday use
Datejust 1601
The specialist coverage describes the 1601’s date mechanism as non-quickset. Changing the date may therefore take more time than on a watch with a quickset function. Ask the seller or a watchmaker to demonstrate setting and date changes safely; do not force the crown if the mechanism resists.
Santos Galbée XL ref. 2823
Fratello identifies an automatic Cartier caliber 049, based on ETA 2892, with a date and a stated 42-hour power reserve. These are model-level specifications, not a promise about the running condition of a particular watch. Have a knowledgeable seller or watchmaker demonstrate that the crown, date and movement operate properly, and request an assessment of accuracy and service needs.

Neither a running movement nor a date that changes correctly establishes recent service or water resistance. The cited Galbée XL article leaves water resistance unspecified, and a vintage Datejust’s family history cannot establish the condition of its seals decades later. Treat either watch as unsuitable for water exposure unless a qualified watchmaker has assessed the specific example.
What to inspect before buying
Vintage condition varies substantially from one watch to another. Request clear photographs and documentation, and arrange an independent inspection when practical. Prioritize the individual watch over generalized claims about a model.

- Confirm the reference and configuration. Ask for the reference and any available paperwork. Compare the dial, hands, bezel, bracelet and clasp with credible reference-specific information; do not treat a familiar appearance as proof of originality.
- Examine the case and dial. Look for damage, signs of polishing, corrosion, inconsistent finishes or parts that appear mismatched. Ask the seller to disclose replacements or modifications.
- Inspect the bracelet and clasp. Check links, screws, clasp operation, wear and fit. For the Galbée XL in particular, confirm that the bracelet is present, fits your wrist and is serviceable; Fratello notes that replacement can be difficult.
- Request service evidence. Ask when the watch was last serviced, who performed the work and whether invoices or service records are available. If documentation is absent, budget and decide on the assumption that service may be needed.
- Have the watch assessed. A competent watchmaker can evaluate operation, condition and likely service needs. A watch that runs is not necessarily accurate, recently serviced, original or water-resistant.
- Compare the full deal. Consider the watch’s condition, completeness, bracelet fit, service documentation and asking price together. A lower price may not be a better value if the watch needs substantial work or lacks important parts.
How to judge the price
There is no reliable broad price benchmark established here for either reference. Compare current examples of the same reference with similar condition, originality, completeness and service evidence, taking geography into account. Do not treat a single auction result as the going rate.
One Rapp Auktionen record reports a CHF 3,400 hammer price for a Santos Galbée XL lot in 2026, with a 25% buyer’s premium stated separately. That is one transaction for one lot—not a current market estimate or a comparable result for every Galbée XL.

Which should you choose?
- Choose the Datejust 1601 if you prefer a round, conventional watch and want the vintage Datejust look. Be comfortable with non-quickset date setting and scrutinize the particular watch’s originality and condition.
- Choose the Santos Galbée XL if you prefer a square case, visible screws and an integrated-bracelet design. Make bracelet fit and condition central to your decision, and verify the operation and service needs of the ref. 2823 you are considering.
- Choose neither until you have inspected it if the seller cannot clearly establish the watch’s configuration, condition or service history. For vintage watches, the specific example can matter more than the model-level comparison.
