What is the SAS “Who Dares Wins” Rolex?
It is a stainless-steel Rolex Explorer II, reference 216570, associated with a 2012 series made for or made available to SAS members. Phillips describes the watches as a series created for members of the unit; that is the auction house’s account, not a statement from Rolex. Rolex’s current Explorer-family product page does not document this SAS series.
The reference 216570 is the standard Explorer II model on which the personalized examples are based. Phillips identifies its example as a 42 mm watch powered by calibre 3187. Auction records include both black- and white-dial examples, so a dial color should be verified for each individual watch rather than assumed to be part of a fixed configuration.
How to recognize the documented special-order details
- Caseband: The motto “Who Dares Wins” is engraved on the side of the case.
- Caseback: Auction catalogues describe the SAS winged-dagger emblem alongside owner-specific identifying information.
- Personalization: Sotheby’s notes the original owner’s initials; Christie’s describes a soldier’s individual ZAP code. The precise layout and marks vary by example.
These details are useful identifiers, but engraving by itself does not prove that a watch is genuine or that it belonged to an SAS member. The catalogue descriptions concern particular watches, not necessarily every watch associated with the order.

What auction records establish—and what they do not
The available documentation is principally from auction-house catalogues, not Rolex-issued documentation about the SAS order. Phillips records a Rolex London guarantee dated December 2012 for its specific watch. Christie’s says the guarantee cards it reviewed indicated that the watches were made available to active SAS soldiers through Rolex London. These are records attached to particular examples and should not be generalized to every purported “Who Dares Wins” Explorer II.

What has one example sold for?
Phillips recorded a sale price of CHF 60,960 for its specific reference 216570 example in 2023. That is a historical auction result, not a current market valuation or a price guarantee for another watch. Sotheby’s separate GBP 17,000–28,000 figure was an estimate, not a realized sale price. Estimates and results are different measures, and neither establishes what an example would cost today.
For any comparison, account for the individual watch’s condition, originality, dial, accompanying papers, documented provenance, and buyer’s premium. A standard Explorer II 216570 is not the same item as an SAS-personalized example, even though both share the reference.

Auction records establish that examples have appeared at auction, but they do not establish current availability. Check a live specialist auction or authenticated pre-owned dealer listing before treating the watch as currently for sale. Confirm that the listing is for the SAS-associated, personalized example rather than ordinary Explorer II reference 216570 stock.

- Match the exact configuration. Confirm reference 216570, dial color, caseband engraving, and caseback details against photographs and the seller’s description.
- Review the supporting records. Ask for the guarantee, any accompanying papers, serial details, and documented ownership history. Match the records to the specific watch rather than relying on a general story about the series.
- Have the watch assessed. Engravings can be copied; obtain an inspection by a qualified specialist and do not treat the motto or emblem alone as authentication.
- Compare like with like. Separate estimates from sold prices, and consider condition, originality, provenance, papers, and buyer’s premium when evaluating any asking price.
