Rolex Sea-Dweller 126600 vs. 116600: 5 Key Differences

The likely intended comparison is the 43 mm Rolex Sea-Dweller 126600 and its 40 mm predecessor, the 116600. The supplied title’s “122600” appears to be a reference-number error: Rolex identifies the newer model as reference 126600. The five main differences are case size, movement, stated power reserve, date magnification and dial lettering; both retain a 1,220 m / 4,000 ft depth rating.

First, the reference number: 126600, not 122600

Rolex identifies its 43 mm Sea-Dweller successor as reference 126600, and specialist comparison coverage pairs that watch with the 116600. “122600” is not supported by the cited Rolex material, so this comparison uses 126600 as the likely intended reference. Rolex’s 126600 product page lists the reference and specifications.

At a glance: the five differences

Feature Sea-Dweller 116600 Sea-Dweller 126600
Case diameter 40 mm (Rolex’s 2017 update page) 43 mm (Rolex’s 2017 update page)
Movement Calibre 3135 (Rolexopedia specialist reference guide) Calibre 3235 (Rolex product page)
Approximate power reserve 48 hours (Rolexopedia specialist reference guide) 70 hours (Rolex product page)
Date magnifier No Cyclops lens, according to Rolexopedia’s reference guide Cyclops lens over the date (Rolex Newsroom)
Sea-Dweller dial lettering White, according to Rolexopedia’s reference guide Red, according to Rolex’s product page

The 116600 figures for movement, reserve and dial details come from a specialist reference guide, while the 126600 figures come from Rolex. The reserve comparison therefore reflects different sources, not a single Rolex-published side-by-side specification.

1. The 126600 has a larger case

The 116600 measures 40 mm across; Rolex enlarged the 2017 model to 43 mm. That is a 3 mm increase in stated diameter, making the later Sea-Dweller more visually prominent. Whether that feels better on the wrist depends on the wearer; the available specifications do not establish a universal comfort advantage for either size. Rolex’s 2017 update states the earlier and newer diameters.

2. The movement changes from calibre 3135 to 3235

The 116600 uses calibre 3135, according to Rolexopedia’s 116600 reference guide. Rolex lists calibre 3235 for the 126600 on its official product page. This is a generational movement change; the available evidence does not support broader claims here about comparative accuracy, durability or servicing outcomes.

3. Stated power reserve rises from about 48 to 70 hours

Rolexopedia gives the 116600’s calibre 3135 an approximate 48-hour reserve. Rolex lists approximately 70 hours for the 126600’s calibre 3235. The figures indicate a roughly 22-hour increase on the stated specifications, but they come from different publishers: the older model’s reserve is secondary-source information, not a figure verified here against an official Rolex reference-specific document.

4. The later model adds a Cyclops date lens

Rolex says the 2017 update added a Cyclops lens on the crystal to magnify the date. Rolexopedia’s 116600 guide describes the earlier reference without that magnifier. This is a practical as well as visual distinction: the 126600 presents an enlarged date, while the 116600 has a cleaner, unmagnified date display. Rolex Newsroom’s update describes the change.

5. Red lettering distinguishes the 126600 dial

Rolex describes the Sea-Dweller name on the 126600 dial as red, a reference to the first Sea-Dweller. Rolexopedia describes the 116600’s dial text as white. The color change gives the later model a more conspicuous vintage-inspired detail without changing the basic purpose of the watch.

What did not change: the depth rating

Despite the larger case and new movement, the 126600 retains the Sea-Dweller’s 1,220 m / 4,000 ft depth rating. Rolex’s technical specification lists that rating and describes the helium escape valve; Rolex’s 2017 update also notes the dive-time bezel. The rating is a model specification, not a recommendation to test an individual watch or a substitute for condition checks on a pre-owned example. Rolex’s 126600 specifications provide the current technical details.

Which reference makes more sense for you?

  • Choose by fit and presence: Compare how the 40 mm and 43 mm cases look and feel on your wrist; diameter alone cannot determine comfort.
  • Choose by date preference: The 126600 has a Cyclops lens, while the 116600 is described as having no magnifier.
  • Choose by movement generation and stated reserve: The 126600’s calibre 3235 is listed with approximately 70 hours, versus approximately 48 hours for the 116600’s calibre 3135 in the cited specialist guide.
  • Choose by dial character: The newer reference’s red Sea-Dweller lettering is more immediately distinctive; the older reference is described with white lettering.
  • For a pre-owned watch, assess the individual example: Check condition, documentation and authenticity rather than assuming every watch with the same reference is equivalent. Rolex says only official Rolex retailers are allowed to sell and maintain its watches; buyers should independently evaluate any pre-owned seller and watch.
