The Rolex Submariner 5512 and Explorer 1016 solve different problems: the 5512 is a dive-oriented watch with a rotating elapsed-time bezel and crown guards, while the 1016 is a time-only field watch best known for its black 3-6-9 dial. Neither is simply a larger or smaller version of the other, and both references changed over their long production runs.
What is the difference between the Submariner 5512 and Explorer 1016?
| Feature | Submariner 5512 | Explorer 1016 |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose and display | Dive-oriented Submariner with a rotating bezel for reading elapsed time. | Time-only Explorer with no rotating bezel, according to Sotheby’s catalogue descriptions. |
| Signature design | Rotating bezel and crown guards; its dial text varies across eras and examples. | Black dial with the distinctive 3, 6 and 9 numerals; examples include early glossy gilt and later matte dials. |
| Movement examples recorded by auction catalogues | Calibres 1530, 1560 and 1570. | Calibres 1560 and 1570. |
| Documented case dimension | Not stated (Sotheby’s catalogue descriptions cited here do not establish a precise 5512 measurement). | 36 mm for the Sotheby’s catalogue examples. |
| Approximate production period | 1959 to around 1980, per Sotheby’s. | Around 1959 or 1960 to 1989, per Sotheby’s; catalogue descriptions differ on the start year. |
The 5512’s bezel makes it the more purpose-built choice for timing an interval at a glance. The 1016 is the more restrained design: it gives the wearer a clear time display without a rotating timing bezel. These functional differences matter more than treating the references as equivalent vintage Rolex sports watches.
Why does the 5512 have crown guards?
Rolex’s Submariner history says the model was introduced in 1953 as the company’s first divers’ wristwatch and that crown guards appeared some years later. Phillips describes the 5512 as a transition in the line and identifies it as the first Submariner to introduce crown guards. Together with its rotating bezel, the guards are a useful visual cue when distinguishing the 5512 from the simpler 1016.
Rolex also states that the Submariner was waterproof to 100 metres (330 feet) at its 1953 release. That is a historical launch specification for the early Submariner line, not a present-day rating for a surviving 5512.

How do the 5512 and 1016 vary by dial and movement?
Submariner 5512
Sotheby’s describes early 5512 examples with calibre 1530 and later examples with calibres 1560 or 1570. The catalogue also links chronometer trials to additional chronometer wording on the dial, often described as a four-line layout. That helps explain why 5512 dial text can differ, but dial wording alone cannot authenticate a particular watch or establish that its components are original.
Explorer 1016
Sotheby’s catalogue examples pair the 1016 with calibre 1560 or 1570 and document its characteristic 3-6-9 layout. The catalogues describe early glossy gilt dials and a transition to matte dials around late 1966 or early 1967. These are broad distinctions rather than a complete guide to every 1016 dial variant.

For either reference, catalogue descriptions of movements and dial eras do not prove that every watch still contains its original movement, dial or hands. A watch’s actual components need to be checked individually.
Is the Explorer 1016 the same size as the Submariner 5512?
Sotheby’s documents 36 mm cases for the 1016 examples described in its catalogues. The reference material cited here does not establish a reliable precise case dimension for the 5512, so it does not support a like-for-like size comparison. Do not assume the watches are the same size based on their similar vintage sports-watch profile.

When were the 5512 and 1016 made?
Sotheby’s places the 5512’s production from 1959 to approximately 1980. Its catalogue descriptions place the 1016’s run at roughly 1959 or 1960 through 1989. The descriptions differ on the 1016 start year, so the safe comparison is that both are long-running references, with the 1016 continuing later.
Which is better: the 5512 or the 1016?
There is no universal winner. Choose by the watch’s function and design that appeal to you: the 5512 has a rotating elapsed-time bezel and crown guards; the 1016 has a simpler time-only display and the 3-6-9 dial. For a purchase, the specific watch’s originality, condition and service history can matter more than those reference-level distinctions.

What to check before buying either vintage reference
Reference identity is only a starting point. Have a qualified vintage-watch specialist assess the candidate watch and its documentation, including:
- Whether the serial and reference are consistent with the watch and its claimed era.
- The movement actually inside the case and whether it is appropriate to the example.
- Dial, hands and other components for originality, replacement or refinishing.
- Case condition and any signs of polishing or alteration.
- Bracelet fit, documentation and service history.
- Current water resistance, which must be assessed for that individual watch rather than inferred from Rolex’s historical or modern Submariner specifications.
Rolex’s current Submariner collection page describes modern models, including a 41 mm case and 300 m water resistance. Those specifications apply to the current collection, not the vintage 5512.
