Specifications and region-specific compatibility details in this comparison come from Samsung Austria’s comparison, updated 8 August 2023. Samsung’s US launch announcement also lists the Watch6 processor, memory and battery figures, and provides its battery-life estimates.
Which watch has the better display?
The Watch6 screen is larger within each case-size class: 1.3 inches versus 1.2 inches for the 40 mm models, and 1.5 inches versus 1.4 inches for the 44 mm models. That gives the newer model more display area without requiring you to move to a larger case class. The exact resolution varies by size and generation, so compare the specification for the particular model you are considering rather than assuming all four variants use the same resolution.
How do performance and storage compare?
Samsung lists the Watch6 with an Exynos W930 dual-core processor at 1.4 GHz and 2 GB of RAM. The Watch5 uses an Exynos W920 and 1.5 GB of RAM. Both are listed with 16 GB of storage. These figures establish a hardware upgrade in the Watch6, but they do not quantify how much faster it feels in everyday use.
#1 Best Overall
- Rotating Bezel Design: Classic rotating bezel enables precise control and smooth navigation.
Does the Watch6 last longer on a charge?
The Watch6 has a slightly larger listed battery in each case size: 300 mAh for 40 mm and 425 mAh for 44 mm, compared with 284 mAh and 410 mAh on the Watch5. Battery capacity is not the same as battery life; actual runtime depends on settings and use.
Samsung estimated the Watch6 series could last up to 40 hours with Always On Display off or up to 30 hours with Always On Display on. Those are Samsung’s estimates from its July 2023 US launch announcement, not independent test results, and they should not be read as a guaranteed runtime for every wearer.
Rank #2
- Larger Super AMOLED Display: Expanded screen area with slimmer bezels for improved visibility and usability.
Are the health features different?
The Samsung Austria comparison lists heart-rate monitoring, ECG and bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) for both generations. It also lists an infrared temperature sensor for the Watch6. That is a difference in the listed sensor set, but the comparison does not establish that every related feature or measurement is available in every country or software configuration.
Health-feature availability can depend on region, software and the paired phone. ECG and other wellness tools are not a substitute for medical diagnosis or advice.

Will either watch work with your phone?
Samsung Austria lists Android 10 or later for the Watch6 and Android 8 or later for the Watch5; it lists neither as compatible with iOS. Because these are regional specifications published in 2023, check Samsung’s current requirements for your country and exact phone before buying.
Are they equally durable?
Samsung Austria lists 5 ATM, IP68 and MIL-STD-810H ratings for both watches. Shared ratings do not mean either watch is safe in every environment or activity; follow Samsung’s usage guidance for the specific model and avoid treating ratings as a blanket promise against damage.
Which should you choose?
Choose the Galaxy Watch6 if
- You want the larger screen within the 40 mm or 44 mm size class.
- You prefer the newer listed processor and 2 GB of RAM.
- You want the slightly larger battery capacity or the listed infrared temperature sensor.
Consider the Galaxy Watch5 if
- It is substantially less expensive than the Watch6 where you live.
- You are satisfied with its smaller display and older listed processor and RAM.
- You want the same listed storage capacity, core health functions and durability ratings at a lower local price.
No current price comparison is established here, so the Watch5 is a value choice only if its actual local discount makes the trade-offs worthwhile. Compare like-for-like models—40 mm with 40 mm or 44 mm with 44 mm—and confirm whether each listing is Bluetooth or LTE before deciding.
