Samsung’s Galaxy Watch sleep-apnea feature is already available in the U.S.; it is not an upcoming launch. The FDA-authorized feature screens for signs of moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in adults 22 and older. It does not diagnose sleep apnea, monitor it continuously, or replace a sleep study.
What the Galaxy Watch sleep-apnea feature detects
The feature is an on-demand screening assessment, not a medical diagnosis. FDA classified Samsung’s software as an over-the-counter device for assessing sleep-apnea risk. A positive result is a reason to seek clinical evaluation; a clinician makes a diagnosis using a sleep study and other relevant information. The feature is not intended to manage an existing diagnosis or track treatment. FDA De Novo decision
It is designed to identify signs of moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnea in eligible adults. It does not detect central sleep apnea, reliably identify mild OSA, explain the cause of breathing disruptions, or determine which treatment is appropriate. Samsung says people already diagnosed with sleep apnea should not use it. Samsung’s U.S. instructions for use
How it works
The watch uses wrist-based photoplethysmography (PPG) to estimate blood-oxygen changes and motion information to help identify sleep periods and filter unsuitable data. Its software looks for repeated relative oxygen decreases in one-minute windows, then uses data from two nights to classify whether the pattern meets its screening threshold. This is not the same as a clinical sleep study or a standalone medical pulse-oximeter reading; the underlying oxygen signal is not provided to users as a clinical result. FDA review

Which watches and phones work
For the U.S. version covered by Samsung’s instructions, the minimum watch is a Galaxy Watch4 running Wear OS 5.0, paired with a compatible Samsung Galaxy phone running Android 12 or later. Samsung describes support for Galaxy Watch4 and later released Galaxy Watch models, excluding Galaxy Fit. Samsung Health Monitor medical features such as sleep-apnea assessment are not available on iPhone or when the watch is paired with a non-Samsung Android phone. Availability can vary by country, model, software, and regulatory status. Check Samsung’s current compatibility information for your location and exact devices rather than assuming every Galaxy Watch supports the feature. How to run the assessment
- Pair a compatible Galaxy Watch with a compatible Samsung Galaxy phone. Update the watch, Galaxy Wearable, and Samsung Health Monitor.
- On the phone, open Samsung Health Monitor, tap Sleep apnea, turn on Sleep apnea feature, and complete the warnings and setup prompts.
- Wear the watch snugly while sleeping for two qualifying nights within a 10-day period. Aim for about four hours or more of sleep per night. Samsung says the feature turns off automatically after the two-night assessment.
- Check Samsung Health Monitor on the phone for the result and assessment history. Processing a night’s data can take up to 90 minutes. Samsung’s setup instructions
For a usable reading, Samsung advises charging the watch to at least 30% before bed and wearing it about 1–2 inches above the wrist bone, with the sensor in firm contact with the skin. Movement, inadequate sleep, or poor oxygen-signal coverage can prevent a result. Samsung’s instructions for use
What a positive, negative, or missing result means
Positive
A positive result means the assessment found a pattern that may indicate moderate-to-severe OSA during those two nights. Contact a physician or sleep specialist for evaluation; the result does not establish a diagnosis, clinical severity, or treatment eligibility. Do not change medication or treatment based on the watch, and do not immediately repeat the assessment to try to obtain a different result. Samsung’s instructions for use

Negative
A negative result means the watch did not detect enough qualifying patterns in the assessment. It does not rule out sleep apnea: the feature can miss cases and is not designed to detect every form or severity. If you have loud snoring, witnessed pauses in breathing, gasping, morning headaches, excessive daytime sleepiness, or difficult-to-control hypertension, discuss those symptoms with a clinician even after a negative result. Samsung’s instructions for use
No result or insufficient data
A missing result is not a negative screening result. Possible causes include sleeping less than about four hours, movement or wakefulness, a loose fit, wearing the watch too close to the wrist bone, inadequate sensor coverage, or failure to sync over Bluetooth. Low peripheral blood flow, wrist hair, tattoos, scars, skin pigmentation, less than 10 MB of available watch storage, outdated software, or unsupported regional availability may also interfere.

Samsung’s U.S. instructions report a validation study involving 470 adults aged 22 or older who wore a compatible Galaxy Watch during two-night polysomnography (PSG). The reported sensitivity was 82.7%: it identified 167 of 202 participants who had moderate-to-severe OSA on both PSG nights. Specificity was 87.7%: it correctly identified 235 of 268 participants who did not have moderate-to-severe OSA on both nights. Agreement with PSG on analyzable nights was 84.2%. These are results from that study, not a guarantee for an individual’s home assessment. Samsung’s U.S. instructions and study results

Sensitivity and specificity measure different things, so combining them into a single claim that the watch is “82.7% accurate” would be misleading. The instructions also report performance variation across participant subgroups; for example, sensitivity was 70% among those with BMI below 25 and 83.3% among those with BMI above 25. Study performance does not tell an individual whether they have OSA, and real-world results can be affected by sleep, fit, and signal quality.
Who should not use it
Samsung’s U.S. instructions say not to use the feature if you are under 22, have already been diagnosed with sleep apnea, or have certain conditions that can make the assessment unsuitable. The listed exclusions include Parkinson’s disease, tremor, periodic limb movement during sleep, congestive heart failure, atrial fibrillation, COPD, chronic bronchitis, emphysema, pulmonary fibrosis, and pregnancy. Samsung also advises against use during temporary breathing disruption from flu, allergies, asthma, or another condition that could distort the result. Read the full instructions and ask a clinician if you are unsure whether an exclusion applies. Full U.S. instructions for use
Should you buy a Galaxy Watch for sleep-apnea screening?
The feature may be useful to an eligible adult who already uses a compatible Samsung phone and wants a screening prompt that could encourage follow-up. It is a poor reason by itself to buy a watch if you use an iPhone, have an existing OSA diagnosis, want continuous apnea alerts, or expect a diagnosis without a clinical evaluation. People with significant symptoms should not delay care while waiting for a wearable assessment.
The FDA authorization applies to Samsung’s Sleep Apnea Feature software, not blanket approval of every Galaxy Watch or its other health features. Samsung announced FDA authorization in February 2024 and U.S. availability for the third quarter of 2024; its current U.S. pages describe the feature as available. Samsung’s announcement A separate collaboration with Stanford Medicine concerns research into future sleep-health applications, not evidence that the current watch offers daily clinical management.
