Its ECG, blood-pressure, and body-composition tools are useful wellness features—but they have important phone, regional, calibration, and medical limitations.
In 2026, the Watch5 is an older model, so its value depends heavily on price, battery condition, software support for the exact model, and how close it costs to a newer Galaxy Watch7 or Watch8.
What is the Samsung Galaxy Watch5?
The Galaxy Watch5 is a Samsung smartwatch built on Wear OS Powered by Samsung, rather than Samsung’s earlier Tizen platform. It combines Samsung’s One UI Watch interface with Google Play access, Samsung Health, Samsung Health Monitor, notifications, fitness tools, GPS, optional LTE connectivity, and third-party Wear OS apps.
The standard Watch5 comes in 40mm and 44mm sizes, with Bluetooth and LTE variants. It uses an Armor Aluminum case and sapphire-crystal display cover. The separate 45mm Galaxy Watch5 Pro uses titanium, has a much larger battery, and adds outdoor-navigation features that the standard Watch5 does not have.

- Rugged Titanium Case: Durable titanium design built for outdoor activities and demanding environments.
At launch, the Watch5 used an Exynos W920 dual-core processor, 1.5GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, Wear OS 3.5, and One UI Watch 4.5. Those are launch specifications, not a guarantee of the current software on every model. Updates vary by model number, country, carrier, and region. Samsung’s launch specifications and the model-specific update page illustrate why buyers should check the exact device.

| Best for | Smaller wrists and lighter wear | Best general balance | Longer outdoor activities |
The Pro is not simply a larger version of the standard Watch5. Its titanium case, heavier construction, 590mAh battery, Route Workout, and Track Back features target hikers, cyclists, and endurance users. That bulk can be an advantage outdoors but a disadvantage for small wrists or anyone who wants to sleep in a lightweight watch.
Display, design, and durability
All Watch5 models use full-color Super AMOLED displays with touchscreen controls and side buttons. The 40mm model has a 396 × 396 panel, while the 44mm and Pro use 450 × 450 panels. An always-on display is available, although keeping it active increases battery consumption.
Sapphire crystal is one of the Watch5’s clearest hardware advantages over the previous Watch4 generation. It is more scratch-resistant than ordinary cover glass, making it useful for everyday wear and outdoor use. It is not unbreakable: a hard impact can still damage the crystal, case, or bezel. Samsung’s product information describes the display protection without making it a guarantee against all damage.

The standard Watch5 is the more comfortable choice for many people. Choose the 40mm model for a smaller wrist or lighter feel. Choose the 44mm model for a larger screen and bigger battery without the Pro’s extra weight. The Pro is best when endurance and outdoor use matter more than slimness.
The series carries 5ATM and IP68 protection claims and Samsung cites MIL-STD-810H durability testing. These ratings do not make the watch waterproof or damage-proof. Water resistance can decline after impact, wear, or repair, and readers should follow Samsung’s current guidance for swimming, saltwater, high-pressure water, hot tubs, and sauna use.
Health features and sensors
The Watch5’s Samsung BioActive Sensor combines an optical heart-rate sensor, an electrical heart-signal sensor, and a bioelectrical impedance analysis sensor. Additional sensors include a skin-temperature sensor, accelerometer, barometer, gyroscope, geomagnetic sensor, and ambient-light sensor.

Heart-rate tracking
The watch can provide spot readings, background monitoring, exercise heart-rate data, and high- or low-heart-rate alerts. Results depend on fit, skin contact, movement, sweat, temperature, tattoos, and the type of exercise. A smartwatch reading should not be treated as equivalent to a clinical monitor, particularly during intense or irregular movement.

ECG
The ECG feature records an electrocardiogram-style reading and can identify patterns that may be consistent with atrial fibrillation. It is an informational rhythm feature, not a complete cardiac diagnostic system. It does not continuously detect every episode of atrial fibrillation and does not diagnose heart attacks or many other heart conditions.
Availability depends on country, regulatory approval, software, and device configuration. It generally requires Samsung Health Monitor and a compatible Samsung Galaxy phone. Samsung’s instructions also warn against using the feature during exercise or near strong electromagnetic fields, and instruct users with implanted pacemakers or defibrillators not to use the ECG app. Do not use an ECG result to change medication or treatment. Read Samsung’s ECG instructions for the applicable safety information.
Blood-pressure estimates
In approved markets, the Watch5 can support Samsung’s blood-pressure feature. It requires a compatible Galaxy phone, Samsung Health Monitor, initial setup, and calibration with an upper-arm cuff-based blood-pressure monitor. Samsung documentation specifies recalibration every four weeks.
Measurements should be taken while resting and under the conditions Samsung recommends. The watch does not replace a clinical blood-pressure cuff. Availability can vary with country, regulatory approval, device-market origin, travel location, and software. If readings are concerning, confirm them with a proper cuff and seek medical advice. See Samsung’s blood-pressure instructions.
Body composition
Bioelectrical impedance analysis estimates metrics such as skeletal muscle, body fat, body water, and related composition measurements. To take a reading, the user touches the designated watch buttons with fingers from the opposite hand while the watch sends a small electrical signal through the body.
These are wellness estimates, not laboratory-grade measurements. Hydration, recent meals, exercise, posture, skin contact, and time of day can change the result. Trends recorded under consistent conditions are more useful than a single number. Samsung presents the feature for general wellness and fitness, not medical diagnosis.

Skin temperature
The skin-temperature sensor can support sleep and menstrual-cycle-related insights. It measures skin temperature, not core body temperature, and should not be used as a fever thermometer. Ambient temperature, blankets, fit, movement, illness, and contact with the skin can influence readings.
Sleep tracking and wellness
The Watch5 can estimate sleep duration, sleep stages, consistency, and related Samsung Health trends. Depending on supported software and features, it can also use overnight blood-oxygen-related measurements and skin-temperature data for wellness or cycle-related insights.
Sleep stages are algorithmic estimates rather than clinical sleep-test results. A loose fit can reduce data quality, and users who want overnight tracking must plan around charging. The Watch5 should not be treated as a clinical sleep device or as proof of a sleep disorder.
Samsung’s support overview provides the current feature context, but exact tools can differ by software version, region, phone, and account.
Fitness, workouts, and GPS
The Watch5 supports automatic recognition for selected activities, manual workout tracking, heart-rate zones, calories, duration, distance, pace, speed, elevation, and route recording for supported activities. It can track swimming and other water-related workouts, while Samsung Health stores workout history and trends. Google Fit can also be used through compatible Wear OS and Android apps.
Workout results depend on wrist placement, GPS conditions, workout type, battery level, software, and whether a dedicated workout mode is started. GPS performance can decline around tall buildings, dense trees, cliffs, tunnels, and other obstructions. Starting only after the watch has acquired a GPS signal can improve route recording.

The Watch5 Pro adds Route Workout and Track Back, alongside its larger battery and titanium construction. Supported workflows can import, export, or share GPX routes, depending on the software and setup. Track Back is intended to help users retrace a route during outdoor activities.

The standard Watch5 still provides GPS and ordinary route recording, but it is not equivalent to the Pro for route-oriented hiking or extended outdoor navigation. Battery use rises substantially with GPS, especially when combined with LTE and a bright always-on display.
Wear OS and smart features
Wear OS gives the Watch5 access to Google Play and compatible apps such as Google Maps and Google Fit. Samsung Health remains central for workouts, sleep, body composition, and trends, while Samsung Health Monitor handles restricted features such as ECG and blood pressure where supported.
Other smart functions include:
- Notifications from a paired phone.
- Calls and texts, depending on the connection, phone, and model.
- Music controls and compatible music apps.
- Watch-face installation through Galaxy Wearable and supported services.
- Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity.
- Optional LTE connectivity for supported carriers and plans.
- NFC-related features where supported by the region, app, and service.
Bluetooth models normally rely on the phone for broader connectivity. LTE models can provide more independence, but cellular operation requires compatible bands, carrier support, an eligible plan, and correct regional configuration. LTE does not guarantee better GPS performance.
Battery life and charging
The standard Watch5 batteries are 284mAh in the 40mm model and 410mAh in the 44mm model. The Watch5 Pro has a 590mAh battery. Samsung’s published estimates include roughly up to 40 hours for certain standard configurations and up to 80 hours for the Pro under specified testing conditions. These are not guaranteed everyday runtimes.
Always-on display, GPS workouts, LTE, frequent notifications, high brightness, continuous health monitoring, poor cellular signal, software activity, and an aging battery can all reduce runtime. A used Watch5 may last substantially less than a new one because lithium-ion capacity declines with age and charging cycles.
Watch5 models support faster WPC-based wireless charging than the Watch4 generation. Charging speed depends on the charger, power adapter, watch temperature, battery level, and software. Used buyers should confirm that a compatible charging puck is included; wireless charging accessories are not universally interchangeable across every watch.

The Watch5 is designed for Android and Wear OS use. Samsung’s launch requirements specified a compatible Android phone running Android 8.0 or later with at least 1.5GB of RAM. Galaxy Wearable and Samsung Health are required for setup and management. Current requirements and supported features can vary, so verify them for the exact model before buying.

Do not assume iPhone compatibility. The most advanced health features generally require a Samsung Galaxy phone, Samsung Health Monitor, supported software, and an approved country or region.
Check these seven points before purchase
- Confirm your phone’s Android version, RAM, and Google Play access.
- Check whether your phone is a Samsung Galaxy model if you need ECG or blood pressure.
- Verify that Samsung Health Monitor is available in your country.
- Confirm that the specific Watch5 model supports the health features you want.
- Check LTE carrier, band, and plan compatibility before buying an LTE version.
- Ask whether a used watch is carrier-locked, region-specific, or imported.
- Verify battery condition, charger inclusion, water-related damage, and return rights.
Is the Galaxy Watch5 worth buying in 2026?
The Watch5 can still be a good purchase when it is substantially cheaper than newer models and comes from a trustworthy seller. The feature set remains broad: sapphire crystal, Samsung Health, sleep tracking, body composition, ECG and blood-pressure support where available, GPS, Wear OS apps, and fast charging.
It is harder to justify when its price approaches a Galaxy Watch7 or Watch8. Newer models offer newer hardware, a longer likely support horizon, newer health and wellness features, and current warranty or accessory availability. Samsung’s June 2026 US MSRP reference lists current Watch7 and Watch8 models from $249.99 to $429.99 before promotions, but MSRP is not the same as sale, refurbished, or used pricing. Check the current Samsung lineup and dated MSRP sheet before deciding.
| Choose this | If… |
|---|---|
| Watch5 40mm | You have a smaller wrist, prefer a lighter watch, and find a large discount. |
| Watch5 44mm | You want the best standard-model balance of screen size, comfort, and battery. |
| Watch5 Pro | You value battery endurance, titanium, hiking, cycling, Route Workout, and Track Back more than low weight. |
| Watch7 or Watch8 | The price difference is modest, or you want newer hardware, warranty, software, and future features. |
Avoid the Watch5 if you use an iPhone, require guaranteed ECG or blood-pressure availability, cannot verify the used unit’s battery condition, or need the newest Samsung health and software features.
Final verdict
The Samsung Galaxy Watch5 still offers an unusually complete smartwatch feature set for a discounted Android watch. Its sapphire-crystal display, BioActive Sensor, Wear OS apps, sleep and workout tracking, GPS, and optional LTE make it especially attractive to Samsung Galaxy owners.
Buy it in 2026 only when the price clearly reflects its age and you have confirmed compatibility, regional health-feature support, software status, charger availability, and battery condition. The standard 44mm is the safest all-round choice; the 40mm suits smaller wrists; and the Pro makes sense mainly for outdoor users who genuinely need its larger battery and navigation tools.
