It can turn wearable readings, sleep history, goals, connected-app data and conversations into fitness, nutrition and wellbeing suggestions. Google says Google Health data is kept separate from Google Ads data and is not used for advertising. That is a useful protection—but it does not mean your information stays on your watch, is never processed in the cloud, or can never be reviewed under Google’s documented limited-review policies.
The practical verdict is narrower: Google Health Coach is not automatically unsafe, but it is an experimental wellness tool that requires a broad health-data trade-off. It should not be treated as a doctor, diagnostic system or private offline diary.
Fitbit’s “Coach” has become Google Health Coach
Google announced the Gemini-powered Fitbit personal health coach on August 20, 2025. Public Preview began later that year and expanded during 2026. The bigger branding change arrived on May 19, 2026, when Google replaced the Fitbit app with the Google Health app and renamed Fitbit Premium as Google Health Premium.
The feature is therefore best described today as Google Health Coach, even though it began as Fitbit’s AI initiative. It is available only in supported markets and requires an eligible Fitbit or Pixel Watch, a Google Account, compatible software, an age of 18 or over, and—under the current Premium model—a Google Health Premium subscription. Google’s US Store lists Premium from $9.99, although pricing, trials and eligibility can vary.

Google has also added an option in some app versions to hide Coach insights from the Today view. That is a display preference, not a privacy switch: hiding cards does not turn off Coach processing or delete health data.
What Google Health Coach can do
Coach is designed to act as a conversational wellness assistant rather than a regulated medical service. Depending on the device, account, location and enabled data sources, it can:
- Build personalized fitness plans and adjust suggestions around goals, activity and recovery.
- Use sleep, readiness and exercise patterns to suggest changes to training or routines.
- Provide general nutrition, hydration, mindfulness and wellbeing guidance.
- Answer questions about stored health metrics.
- Log meals, workouts, weight, water and other information from a conversation.
- Accept some photos and PDFs for meal or workout logging and related discussion.
- Summarize medical records and answer questions about them, according to Google’s current Premium description.
- Send proactive coaching notifications, which can themselves reveal health information on a lock screen or shared phone.
That breadth explains both the appeal and the privacy concern. The more context Coach receives, the more personalized its suggestions may become—but the data being combined is unusually sensitive.
What information can Coach use?
Google’s support documentation describes a much wider data set than steps and heart rate alone.

| Data category | Examples |
|---|---|
| Wearable and health metrics | Steps, distance, calories or energy burned, cardio load, heart rate, exercise history, sleep duration, schedule and stages. |
| Body measurements | Weight, body-fat percentage, heart-rate variability, breathing rate, skin temperature and blood oxygen. |
| Reproductive health | Cycle information, symptoms and related algorithmic insights. |
| Profile information | Name, age, height, weight, sex, goals and preferences. |
| Conversations | Text and voice interactions, questions, uploaded information, feedback and Coach conversation transcripts. |
| Connected services | Data from linked third-party exercise, nutrition, menstrual-health or other apps. |
| Medical information | Medical-record data that you choose to share with Google Health. |
| Location and technical data | Location when permission is granted, including GPS-derived information for city or weather-aware insights, plus language and IP-derived country information. |
In other words, the important question is not simply whether Google can see Fitbit data. It is whether you are comfortable with Google Health combining wearable measurements, reproductive information, medical records, third-party data, location and conversational history in one cloud service.
What Google promises about advertising—and what that does not mean
Google says Google Health and Fitbit health-and-wellness data are kept separate from Google Ads data and are not used for Google advertising. You can read Google’s current explanation in its Google Health privacy controls.
| Google’s stated protection | What readers should not infer |
|---|---|
| Health data is not used for Google Ads. | The information is never processed by Google. |
| Health data is kept separate from Ads data. | It is never shared with a connected service that you authorize. |
| Coach can be disabled. | Turning it off automatically deletes existing health history. |
| Coach conversations are described as private. | No human review can ever occur under any circumstance. |
| Privacy controls are available. | Every copy disappears instantly when you delete something. |
Google’s documentation says limited human review may occur to improve or troubleshoot experimental AI features. That does not establish routine or universal access to conversations, but it does mean “private” should not be read as “never accessible to a human.” The exact scope and circumstances should be judged from Google’s current policy rather than assumed.
Similarly, when Google Health data is shared with another Google service or connected feature, the applicable consent and privacy terms for that service may apply. The advertising promise is meaningful, but it answers only the advertising question—not every question about cloud processing, retention, connected apps or review.

How long is Coach data kept?
Google says information associated with Coach is automatically deleted after 30 days in the context described by its Coach documentation. That should not be confused with deletion of all Fitbit or Google Health history.
Keep these distinctions separate:
- Coach processing data: Some information associated with Coach is described as automatically deleted after 30 days.
- Underlying health history: Wearable and manually entered data may remain in Google Health until you delete it.
- Conversation history: Coach conversations can be managed and deleted separately.
- Account deletion: This follows a different process, including a recovery period and possible delays for backups.
Turning off Coach stops the feature from using data going forward, according to Google, but it does not automatically erase data that has already been stored.
Is the advice accurate and safe?
Google explicitly warns that Coach can make mistakes. It is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent medical conditions, and it is not authorized to provide professional pharmaceutical recommendations or clinical assessments. It also cannot replace medical care.
That limitation matters even when the output sounds confident. Third-party coverage in August 2026 reported user complaints about incorrect workout summaries, invented activities and misread metrics. These reports demonstrate plausible failure modes, but they do not establish a measured error rate or prove that most users experience them.

Use Coach for general habit formation, fitness planning and summaries that you can check against the underlying record. Do not use it to interpret urgent symptoms, change medication, assess diagnostic images or make decisions about a serious condition. People with cardiovascular, metabolic, kidney, pregnancy-related or other significant health concerns should treat generated plans as suggestions and consult a qualified clinician.
Google also says Coach cannot analyze diagnostic medical images or evaluate photos of physical symptoms for clinical assessment. Uploading a PDF or image to a conversation does not turn the assistant into a medical reviewer.

Google’s current control path is:
- Open the Google Health app.
- Tap your profile picture or initial in the upper-right corner.
- Tap Your data in Google Health.
- Under Feature privacy controls, tap Manage feature privacy controls.
- Select Google Health Coach.
- Tap Turn off and confirm.
This is the feature-level opt-out. It does not delete your existing Google Health or Fitbit history.
Reduce exposure without deleting everything
- Stop notifications: Go to Profile picture → Google Health settings → Push notifications → Coaching and disable Coach notifications.
- Hide Today cards: If your version exposes the setting, hide Coach insights from the Today view. This changes what is displayed, not what is processed.
- Remove location: Withdraw Google Health’s location permission in your phone’s Android or iOS app-permission settings.
- Audit connections: Review linked nutrition, exercise, menstrual-health and other third-party apps. Disconnect anything you no longer need.
- Limit uploads: Do not add medical records, PDFs or photos unless the benefit is worth the additional exposure.
- Delete conversations: Use Google Health’s Coach-history controls to remove individual or all conversations, where available.
Also review notification previews if you share your phone, use a workplace-managed device or keep your lock screen visible to other people.

What happens when you delete Google Health?
Google says Google Account users can delete Google Health from the Google Health app. Its current documentation describes a 30-day recovery period before Google Health data is permanently deleted, while some personal information may take up to 90 days to disappear from backup systems.
There are several important edge cases:
- Deleting Google Health does not automatically remove data previously authorized for other Google services.
- Account deletion does not automatically erase data stored locally on a Fitbit device.
- Before selling or transferring a Fitbit, erase the device separately.
- Export data first if you may need your records later.
- Cancel a paid subscription separately; deleting health data and ending billing are not necessarily the same action.
Fitbit users who resisted Google Account migration also faced a practical deadline: after the May 19, 2026 transition, continued access required migration, and Google said users who did not migrate had a limited period to download or delete their data before deletion processing began on July 15, 2026.
Should you enable it?
Coach may be worthwhile if you:
- Already own a compatible Fitbit or Pixel Watch.
- Want adaptive fitness, sleep, nutrition or habit guidance.
- Are comfortable storing sensitive health information under a Google Account.
- Understand that the feature is experimental and may produce inaccurate summaries.
- Are willing to verify important claims against the underlying record.
- Consider the Premium subscription worthwhile; Google’s US Store lists it from $9.99 per month.
Keeping it off may be the better choice if you:
- Do not want reproductive-health, sleep, weight, medical-record or conversation data used for personalized coaching.
- Object to cloud-based AI processing of sensitive information.
- Want a tracker that does not require Google Account migration.
- Could mistake a polished AI answer for medical authority.
- Are frustrated by inaccurate summaries or intrusive notifications.
- Only need basic steps and sleep tracking, which Google presents as part of the base Google Health experience with a compatible wearable.
How Google compares with alternatives
Switching ecosystems changes the trade-offs; it does not make privacy questions disappear. Garmin is a strong fit for endurance training, battery life and detailed performance metrics, but is not a direct replacement for Gemini-style conversational coaching. Apple Watch offers broad health and safety features for iPhone users but is a poor choice for Android owners. Oura emphasizes sleep and recovery in a ring form factor, while Polar is particularly training-focused. Strava and other dedicated apps can add activity-specific coaching without replacing all the continuous sleep and heart-rate data of a wearable.
Before moving, export and explicitly delete Google-held Fitbit data. Buying another tracker does not automatically erase the old account or data already shared with connected services.

Bottom line
Google Health Coach is a capable-looking wellness feature built on a substantial data trade-off. Google’s separation of Google Health data from Google Ads data is reassuring, and users have controls to disable Coach, manage conversations, remove location access and delete their account. But the service can still process highly sensitive information—including reproductive health, medical records, location and voice or text conversations—and Google documents limited circumstances in which human review of experimental AI features may occur.
Enable it if personalized guidance is worth that trade-off and you will treat its output as fallible. Keep it disabled if minimizing cloud processing of health data matters more than AI personalization. In either case, do not rely on it for diagnosis, urgent symptoms or medical decisions.
