Samsung’s WalkieTalkie app launched for the Galaxy Watch4 and Watch4 Classic on August 31, 2021. It remains listed on Google Play, and Samsung’s current listing includes the Watch4, Watch4 Classic, Watch5, Watch5 Pro and later Galaxy Watch models. The app is network-based push-to-talk voice chat—not a radio—and setup requires a connected phone with a phone number and Samsung account.
What Samsung’s WalkieTalkie app does
WalkieTalkie lets two or more eligible users speak in one-to-one or group rooms using a Galaxy Watch. It offers contact invitations and nearby-room discovery with a PIN. To transmit, press and hold the on-screen Speak button; settings also offer a tap-to-toggle option under How to talk. Samsung says a separate WalkieTalkie phone app is not required. Samsung’s Google Play listing describes the current features and connection requirements.
The name describes the push-to-talk interface, not the transmission technology. The app uses the watch’s network connection or the connected phone’s connection, so it is not a Bluetooth-only or long-range radio service.
Which Galaxy Watches and phones are compatible?
Supported watches
Samsung’s current Google Play listing names the Galaxy Watch4, Watch4 Classic, Watch5, Watch5 Pro and Galaxy Watch models launched afterward. That is broader than the original Watch4-era launch framing: contemporary coverage described the app as exclusive to the Watch4 at launch. It is not a general app for every Wear OS watch. 9to5Google’s August 2021 report covers that original limitation.

Do not assume older Samsung watches are supported. Samsung says its Wear OS Galaxy watch era began with the Watch4; earlier models generally run Tizen. Check the Samsung Wear OS support page and the app listing for your exact model. Store availability can also vary by country and account region.
Phone and registration requirements
For general Watch4 and Watch5 setup, Samsung specifies a compatible Android phone running Android 6.0 or later, with at least 1.5 GB of RAM and Google Mobile Services; these watches cannot be set up with an iPhone. WalkieTalkie’s own listing recommends a Galaxy smartphone running Android 8.0 or later. Samsung says the phone connected to the watch must have a phone number and a registered Samsung account for initial service registration. These are distinct requirements: the broad watch setup guidance does not establish that every non-Samsung Android phone will complete WalkieTalkie registration.

How to install and register WalkieTalkie
- Pair the watch with a compatible phone in the Galaxy Wearable app.
- On the watch, open the Google Play Store and search for WalkieTalkie by Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. You can also open the official Google Play listing and choose the watch as the installation target.
- Install the app on the watch. If it does not appear in a phone Play Store search, search from the watch’s Play Store instead; the watch is the app’s target device.
- Keep the watch connected to the phone for first launch, then complete Samsung account and phone-number registration.
- Allow the requested permissions and create a room or accept an invitation.
Samsung lists microphone, Contacts, Call and Nearby device permissions as required. Microphone access is needed for voice; Contacts supports finding eligible friends; Call access lets the app limit use during calls; and Nearby device supports nearby channel setup. Location is optional for finding nearby users through Bluetooth. Missing permissions can prevent related functions from working.
How to create a room, invite people and talk
Invite contacts
- Open WalkieTalkie and choose Invite, then Contacts.
- Select one or more eligible contacts, name the room and tap Done.
The app filters contacts for people registered and eligible to use the service.

Set up a nearby room
- Choose Invite, then People nearby.
- Name the room and tap Done.
- Share the displayed PIN with the people you want to join.
Join and speak
Join by tapping an invitation notification, choosing a room in the app’s Invitations list, or selecting Search nearby and entering the PIN. In the room, press and hold Speak to transmit and release it to stop. For toggle-style operation, change How to talk to Tap in settings. Labels may vary slightly with language or app version.
Does it require an LTE Galaxy Watch?
Samsung describes two possible network paths: the watch’s own connection or the connected phone’s connection. The listing does not say that an LTE watch is required, so a Bluetooth model can use the phone as its network path. The watch or phone still needs a usable internet connection for ongoing communication; the phone-number requirement is for initial registration, not evidence that the watch itself needs a SIM or LTE plan.

That network dependence matters in the field: without data coverage or another available network path, this is not a substitute for two-way radios. It is best treated as a convenient way to exchange short voice messages when the watch or paired phone is connected.

- The watch is unsupported: Check Samsung’s current supported-model listing. Older Tizen watches and non-Samsung Wear OS watches should not be assumed compatible.
- The store region does not offer it: Historical Samsung Community reports describe country availability and installation-compatibility problems. These reports document past cases, not a definitive current map of availability. See the Poland availability report and a separate Watch4 Classic installation report.
- The phone does not meet the service recommendation: Samsung recommends a Galaxy phone on Android 8.0 or later and requires a connected phone number and Samsung account for initial registration.
- Permissions are missing: Review microphone, Contacts, Call and Nearby device access in the watch’s app permissions. Grant Location if you want to use Bluetooth-based nearby discovery.
- The watch is offline: Confirm it is paired in Galaxy Wearable and that the phone has internet access. Check that the watch itself has Wi-Fi or mobile data if it is meant to connect independently.

- Confirm the watch is paired in Galaxy Wearable and the phone has internet access.
- Check the watch’s network connection; reconnect Wi-Fi or mobile data if needed.
- Open the Play Store on the watch and install available updates for WalkieTalkie and relevant watch services.
- Reopen WalkieTalkie while the watch is connected to the phone, then review permissions.
- Restart both devices and try again.
A Samsung Members user reported resolving a “watch disconnected” setup issue by reconnecting the watch to Wi-Fi, returning to the app and accepting permissions. That is a user-reported workaround, not a guaranteed Samsung procedure. Read the report.
Who will find it useful?
The main practical constraint is the group of people you want to reach: they also need supported Galaxy Watches and must be able to register. That makes WalkieTalkie a reasonable convenience for friends or family already using compatible Galaxy Watch models, but a poor choice for a mixed-device group that includes Apple Watch, Fitbit, Garmin, older Tizen watches or other Wear OS brands.
For Apple Watch users, Apple’s Walkie-Talkie feature is the closest built-in comparison, but it stays within the Apple Watch ecosystem. For mixed-device groups, ordinary calls or voice messages are less seamless on the wrist but avoid the Galaxy Watch restriction. Business and field teams that need dispatch, administration, audit logs or broader device support should look at dedicated push-to-talk services rather than treating Samsung’s casual chat app as a professional radio replacement.
