Its official pages disagree on whether the 70th anniversary was celebrated in 2024 or falls in 2025, so the milestone is best understood as a company-published chronology rather than a single, consistently stated event date.
When was Sea-Gull founded?
Sea-Gull’s official store traces the company’s history to a Five-Star watch, also rendered Wu Xing or Wuxing. The store says the watch was completed at 5:45 p.m. on March 24, 1955, and describes it as China’s first domestically manufactured watch. The store says Wuyi appeared as a trial product in 1957 and entered mass production by October 1958. Its timeline then follows Tianjin Watch Factory’s work on an aviation chronograph and the later Sea-Gull brand name.
Why do Sea-Gull’s pages give different 70th-anniversary dates?
Sea-Gull’s international About page says the brand celebrated its 70th anniversary in 2024. The official store timeline, by contrast, calls 2025 the 70th anniversary, consistent with counting 70 years from the 1955 Five-Star watch. The pages do not explain the discrepancy; both dates should be attributed to the page that uses them rather than treated as one settled celebration date. What was the D304 aviation chronograph?
Sea-Gull’s store says Tianjin Watch Factory received a commission in April 1961 to develop a top-secret Air Force aviation chronograph, codenamed “304.” It reports that 1,400 finished watches had been delivered to front-line pilots by October 1966. The international About page separately describes D304 as China’s first aviation chronograph and dates its development to 1963. The store also dates the Dongfeng watch to 1966 and says the product was rebranded Sea-Gull in 1973. This places the familiar brand name later than the company’s claimed 1955 watchmaking origin.

What movements does Sea-Gull make?
Sea-Gull’s international brand page presents the company as a mechanical-movement manufacturer and names several calibres:
- ST1901: manual-winding column-wheel chronograph movement.
- ST2130: automatic three-hand movement with a date display.
- ST25 series: a movement series listed by the brand; the page does not specify a single configuration in the cited description.
The brand describes itself as China’s largest manufacturer of mechanical watch movements and says it produces over two million movements annually. That is a current company-reported claim on an undated page, not an independently verified production statistic. A separate Chinese corporate profile reports annual capacity of two million movements and 200,000 finished watches; capacity is not the same measure as annual output.
