The Seiko 7549 Golden Tuna is the quartz version of Seiko’s Professional Diver 600m. It arrived in 1978, when the line moved from a mechanical movement to the analog quartz caliber 7549. It is not the 1975 mechanical original, and it is not the later 1,000m ceramic-cased 7C46 model. Keeping those three apart is the most useful thing a prospective buyer or admirer can do.
What the Golden Tuna actually is
Seiko Museum Ginza’s history of the Professional Diver’s 600m watch says the model changed from a mechanical movement to quartz in 1978, with caliber 7549. The museum describes slimmer outer-body “cuffs” around the bezel and improved hand visibility. It also describes near-golden coloring on the inner body, the rotating bezel, the crown and the external fixing screws. That gold-toned hardware is what the “Golden” in the nickname refers to.
The museum gives a retail price of ¥120,000 for this 1978 quartz iteration. That is a historical Japanese list price, not a guide to what examples sell for today. No current market price is established here.
The museum page also repeats a comment it says users often made: “Whatever happens, surely at least this watch will continue working as if nothing had happened!” It does not name a speaker, so treat it as a general reputation for toughness, not a measured result.

Where it sits in the Professional Diver line
| Stage | Movement | Rating | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Earlier 600m | Mechanical | 600m | The 1975 mechanical predecessor |
| Golden Tuna (1978) | Quartz caliber 7549 | 600m | Slimmer cuffs, improved hand visibility, near-golden components (Seiko Museum Ginza) |
| March 1986 change | Quartz caliber 7C46 | 1,000m | High-strength black ceramic outer body (Seiko Museum Ginza) |
The 1986 changes of movement, outer-body material and depth rating belong to the later watch. Do not credit them to the 7549.

Manuals and service documentation
Seiko’s official support “Instruction” index lists an English “Instruction of 7549 (Analog Quartz)”. It tells owners to check the case back for the caliber code, so confirm “7549” there before you download anything.

Seiko Service USA also publishes a technical guide for Cal. 7549A and 7548A. Its listing shows it covers specifications, battery change, case and movement service, and adjustment. That is a service document for qualified watchmakers. A watch built for diving depends on its seals, so battery changes and case work on a watch this old are best left to someone who can pressure-test it afterwards.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why a quartz diver appeals
The Golden Tuna shows Seiko putting its quartz technology into a serious tool watch. Its rugged shrouded design and gold-toned hardware are a different character from the mechanical Professional Diver that came before it. The documented history supports admiring it as a milestone in Seiko’s diver line. The sources here do not include hands-on testing, so no accuracy or durability figures are claimed.
