The Seiko Astron 5X53 is a GPS Solar movement used in multiple Astron watch references. It combines GPS-assisted time and time-zone adjustment with a dual-time sub-dial, a world-time function covering 39 time zones, and a time-transfer feature that swaps the main- and sub-dial times. The caliber name alone does not identify a watch’s case size or materials, so check the specific reference as well as the movement.
What the 5X53 movement does
A solar cell beneath the dial converts light into electrical energy to charge the watch. Seiko lists GPS functions for time-zone adjustment, manual time adjustment and automatic time adjustment, alongside dual time and world time. The practical distinction is that GPS time-zone adjustment updates the local zone as well as the time; manual time adjustment corrects the time while keeping the selected zone.
The 5X53’s world-time function covers 39 time zones, according to Seiko’s official specifications. Seiko’s 5X dual-time overview describes rapid time-zone adjustment and automatic synchronization as features of the series. Those are manufacturer claims, not independent performance-test results.
How dual time and time transfer work
The sub-dial at six o’clock can display a second region’s time while the main dial displays the selected local time. Time transfer swaps the times assigned to the two displays. This is useful when the time shown as the secondary zone becomes the one you want to read as local time; it is distinct from changing the watch’s time zone.

How to set the time zone when travelling
Use GPS time-zone adjustment when reception is available. If you cannot receive GPS signals, Seiko’s guide also documents manual time-zone setting. After setting a zone manually, check the daylight-saving-time setting rather than assuming it has followed local rules.
- When GPS reception is possible: use the watch’s GPS time-zone adjustment function to select the local zone and update the time. Follow the button sequence for your particular watch in Seiko’s 5X53 complete user guide.
- When GPS reception is unavailable: set the time zone manually using the procedure in that guide. Manual time-zone setting is separate from manual time adjustment, which corrects the time for the zone already selected.
- Check DST: after manual time-zone selection, verify whether daylight saving time should be on or off for your location and date. The 5X53 guide says the DST state changes from AUTO to ST (off) or DST (on) after manual time-zone setting; set it as needed for the destination.
Seiko’s time-zone data notice dates the 5X53’s listed time-zone information to March 2018 and warns that official time-zone policies can change. Check the local time and DST rules for your destination, particularly in places where rules have changed since then.

How to identify the right 5X53 watch
5X53 is a caliber designation, not a single case reference. Seiko lists the movement in multiple Astron models, including SSH006 and SSH109, whose specifications differ. Use the model reference and the caliber marking on the case back to identify the watch; when comparing listings, confirm that the reference, configuration, region and seller match.

Power reserve and stated accuracy
Seiko specifies approximately six months of operation on a full charge without power save, or approximately two years if power save is activated after a full charge. The figures are manufacturer specifications and depend on the stated power-save condition.
For operation without GPS reception, Seiko lists accuracy of ±15 seconds per month at temperatures from 5°C to 35°C. Seiko’s 2019 announcement also gives a “one second every 100,000 years” accuracy claim for the 5X series. That is a Seiko series claim, not an independently established test result for every 5X53 watch.
