The releases below are a selective roundup, not a complete launch list. Baselworld ran from March 17 to 24, 2016, according to Seiko’s event overview.
Prospex brought GPS Solar to a sailing watch
The clearest technology shift was the Marinemaster GPS Solar Dual-Time: Seiko presented it as the first watch outside Astron to use its GPS Solar technology. That “first” is Seiko’s own product claim. The move put satellite-based timekeeping into Prospex, a collection associated here with marine use.
Fratello’s 2016 report describes the watch as designed with sailing in mind, including snag resistance as a consideration. It reports a 48.5 mm case, 200 m water resistance, a limited run of 1,500, and a European launch price of €3,300. These are historical report details, not current availability or pricing. Fratello’s Baselworld 2016 roundup also names the Prospex PADI Turtle SRPA21K1 among that year’s releases.
Astron’s 8X22 made GPS World-Time slimmer
Seiko’s Astron GPS Solar World-Time with caliber 8X22 focused on a more compact profile than the other 8X-series models cited in the company’s announcement: 12.4 mm thick rather than 13.3 mm. The listed titanium case measured 44.8 mm across. The movement offered 40 time zones, a perpetual calendar through 2100, a power-save function, and GPS-controlled time and time-zone adjustment. Seiko announced seven titanium versions: one limited edition and six other designs.

Seiko specified ±15 seconds per month when the watch receives no time signal, measured at 5°C–35°C. Separately, the company advertised accuracy of one second in 100,000 years in the context of GPS synchronization. That is a manufacturer claim about GPS-adjusted time, not an ordinary accuracy figure for operation without a signal. Seiko also said the time-zone data reflected March 2015; subsequent changes could require manual selection. The limited SSE091 was specified at 44.8 mm by 12.4 mm, with 10 bar water resistance and a production limit of 3,500. Seiko’s 8X22 announcement gives the full feature and specification context.
Presage turned its 60th anniversary toward chronographs
Presage’s anniversary chronographs referred back to Seiko’s first automatic watch, introduced 60 years earlier. The two versions shown had either a white enamel dial or a black lacquer dial. Fratello reported a 42 mm case, sapphire crystal, 100 m water resistance, a column-wheel 8R48 movement, and planned availability in September 2016.

An important show-floor qualification: Fratello said the displayed examples were non-functioning prototypes with no movements installed. Its report therefore documents the announced design and specifications, not a working-watch test. The contemporary report listed historical European prices of €2,500 for the white version and €2,850 for the black; those are not current market prices. Fratello’s report covers the prototypes, and Seiko’s Baselworld announcement index confirms Presage was part of the event slate.
Grand Seiko spanned ceramic sports watches and high craft
Black Ceramic limited editions
Grand Seiko’s Black Ceramic series paired ceramic outer shells with high-intensity titanium inner cases. The four announced Spring Drive models divided into two types: SBGC015 and SBGC017 chronograph GMT watches using caliber 9R96, and SBGE037 and SBGE039 GMT watches using caliber 9R16. Seiko listed a 46.4 mm diameter and 10 bar water resistance for the series.

SBGD001 and the eight-day Spring Drive
The SBGD001 offered a different kind of statement: a manually wound Spring Drive with an eight-day (192-hour) power reserve, housed in a 43 mm platinum 950 case with 10 bar water resistance. Seiko identified it as the first Grand Seiko created by the Micro Artist Studio. The company’s approximate European recommended price at announcement was €60,000, a historical launch figure rather than a current price. Credor showed Seiko’s art-watch range
Credor’s Baselworld announcement was titled “A new masterpiece from Credor. A tourbillon with three-dimensional engraving and lacquer work inspired by the art of the Edo period.” That title supports the release’s place in the lineup as an art-watch outlier, rather than as a mass-market or everyday-use recommendation. Seiko’s event index links to the announcement, which provides the stated inspiration and craft focus: Seiko’s Baselworld event page and Credor tourbillon announcement.
What tied the releases together
The year’s highlights were less a single design language than a spread of priorities. GPS Solar expanded from Astron into a large, sailing-oriented Prospex model, while Astron refined its World-Time package. Presage put an anniversary spotlight on enamel and lacquer dials; Grand Seiko paired technical sports models with an eight-day, studio-finished creation; Credor represented traditional decorative artistry. Seiko president Shinji Hattori described the slate in his 2016 message as combining Grand Seiko design, a global Presage collection, wider GPS Solar, and a Credor tourbillon. That is the company’s own characterization of its collection, rather than an independent assessment. Hattori’s dated statement.
