Seiko’s 55th-anniversary diver’s watch editions were a 2020 collection revisiting the brand’s 1965, 1968, 1970 and 1975 dive-watch designs. The range is broader than the original three-watch “trilogy”: it includes three high-spec mechanical recreations, two modern reinterpretations and a later 1965 recreation. Here’s how the six references differ—and what Seiko’s original specifications and US launch prices actually say.

What the 55th-anniversary collection commemorates

Seiko identifies its 1965 automatic diver’s watch, rated to 150m, as Japan’s first diver’s watch. The company says the model was used by the Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition in the 1960s. The anniversary editions revisit landmark designs from 1965, 1968, 1970 and 1975. Seiko’s March 2020 US announcement introduced the core trilogy and the SPB149; a later official product page added the SLA043 and SPB183 under the anniversary label.

“Re-creation” and “modern reinterpretation” are useful distinctions. Seiko positioned the SLA037, SLA039 and SLA041 as recreations of earlier professional models, while SPB149 and SPB183 translate earlier designs into contemporary watches. SLA043 is another 1965 re-creation, not a different name for SLA037.

The prices in the table are approximate recommended retail prices announced by Seiko Watch Corporation for the United States in 2020, not current prices. The water-resistance entries reproduce Seiko’s descriptions; they are not presented as equivalent dive certifications. Specifications for SLA037, SLA039, SLA041 and SPB149 come from the US announcement; SLA043 and SPB183 details come from the later official product page.

How the watches differ in practice

SLA037: the compact 1965 mechanical recreation

SLA037 pairs a 39.9mm Ever-Brilliant Steel case with Seiko’s high-beat 8L55 automatic movement. Seiko specified a box-shaped sapphire crystal with inner anti-reflective coating, a silicone strap and 200m diver’s water resistance. Its blue-gray dial has a subtle color gradation; Seiko says the strap texture echoes that of the historic design.

SLA039: the 1968 recreation with a higher stated rating

The 44.8mm SLA039 also uses the 8L55 and Ever-Brilliant Steel, but Seiko rated it for 300m saturation-diver’s water resistance. It has a dual-curved sapphire crystal with inner anti-reflective coating and a silicone strap. Seiko described its blue-gray dial as subtly graduated and the strap as drawing on historical textures.

SLA041: the largest original-trilogy model

At 52.4mm across and 17.2mm thick, the SLA041 is the largest of the original trilogy. Its 8L35 movement is distinct from the high-beat 8L55 in SLA037 and SLA039. Seiko specified a titanium inner case with super-hard coating, an Ever-Brilliant Steel bezel, sapphire crystal, accordion-style silicone strap and 1,000m saturation-diver’s water resistance.

SPB149: a more contemporary 1965 interpretation

The SPB149 is smaller and slimmer than the three original-trilogy recreations with published dimensions: 40.5mm in diameter and 13.2mm thick. It uses the 6R35 automatic movement, and Seiko supplied both a stainless-steel bracelet and a silicone strap. Its announced 2020 US recommended retail price was substantially lower than those of the three SLA models, but that historical difference does not establish today’s market price.

SLA043 and SPB183: later additions, not trilogy variants

SLA043 is a separate 1965 re-creation, limited to 1,700 pieces and powered by the 8L35. Seiko’s product page specifies a box-shaped sapphire crystal, 200m water resistance and an additional blue silicone strap with the special box.

SPB183 revisits the 1970 asymmetric design, recognizable by its crown at 4 o’clock. It is a modern reinterpretation with the 6R35 movement, 70-hour power reserve and 200m water resistance. Seiko specifies dual-curved sapphire with inner anti-reflective coating, a bracelet extender and an additional blue silicone strap.

Edition quantities and the trilogy presentation set

The original three SLA references were each limited to 1,100 pieces. The two 1965 modern/re-creation references and the 1970 reinterpretation have different quantities: SPB149 and SPB183 were each announced at 5,500 pieces, while SLA043 was limited to 1,700. Seiko also announced 100 special presentation sets containing the three original-trilogy watches and additional black straps. These are production quantities announced in 2020, not evidence of how many remain available.

Launch dates, regional differences and current availability

Seiko’s March 2020 US announcement gave June, July and August 2020 as release months for SLA037, SLA039 and SLA041, respectively. Seiko’s Canadian page instead listed July, August and September for those references; the cited pages do not explain the difference. The US announcement also contains an internal discrepancy for SPB149, referring to both June and July, so it is safer not to assign that model a single release month based on that page. The later official page lists SLA043 and SPB183 for November 2020.

Seiko’s Ever-Brilliant Steel claim

For the Ever-Brilliant Steel used in several of these watches, Seiko claimed a PREN value 1.7 times that of the steel grade used in most high-end watches. The company dated that comparison to December 2019 and attributed it to its own research; the cited material does not provide an independent materials study verifying the comparison.
