Seiko and Japanese retailer Nano Universe later released a limited-edition re-creation in 2017. They are related designs, but they are not the same watch: the collaboration models have their own reference numbers, sizes and edition details.
What watch did Steve Jobs wear?
Jobs wore a vintage Seiko Chariot in the 1984 portrait photographed by Norman Seeff. The image came from a casual portrait session at Jobs’s home, rather than a staged watch campaign. Seeff recalled that Jobs “spontaneously sat down with a Macintosh in his lap” and that he got the shot the first time, according to Hodinkee’s account.
The original watch and the later collaboration should not be conflated. The Seiko/Nano Universe releases reproduced the Chariot’s design; they are not the specific vintage watch Jobs wore. Hodinkee reported that the original sold at auction in 2016 for $42,500. That historical result is not a current appraisal and does not establish the value of a reissue.
Which Seiko Nano Universe Chariot reissue is which?
The initial 2017 collaboration included four references. Seiko’s announcement identified the standard models as white-dial limited editions and the black-dial models as Nano Universe exclusives. Each was priced at ¥20,000 plus tax at the planned Japanese launch on March 10, 2017; this is the original launch price, not a current offer. The reference and edition details below come from Seiko’s February 17, 2017 announcement.

The edition sizes apply to each reference, not to all white- or black-dial watches combined. The size difference is meaningful: the collaboration offered a 33 mm case and a 37.5 mm case, so check the exact reference rather than relying on a listing title that only says “Steve Jobs watch.”
What are the 2017 reissue’s specifications?
Seiko’s official release describes a quartz watch powered by caliber 7N01, with average monthly accuracy of ±15 seconds. The 33 mm versions are 6.4 mm thick; the 37.5 mm versions are 6.6 mm thick. The case and buckle are stainless steel with black hard coating, paired with a calf strap. The release calls the water resistance enhanced for everyday use, but does not give an atmosphere rating for these 2017 references.

The watches have numbered casebacks and came in a Nano Universe presentation box. These details can help you compare a listing with the announced model, but a reference number or caseback marking by itself does not prove that a particular used watch is genuine.
How do the 2018 color variants differ?
Nano Universe/TSI announced eight additional color variants in January 2018, using new reference numbers rather than extending the 2017 quartet. The 37.5 mm references were SCXP107, SCXP109, SCXP111 and SCXP113; the 33 mm references were SCXP117, SCXP119, SCXP121 and SCXP123. The announcement describes these later variants as having 5-atmosphere water resistance, JIS class 1 magnetic resistance, caliber 7N01, average monthly accuracy of ±15 seconds under specified conditions, and an approximately three-year battery life. Nano Universe said the March and December 2017 color releases had sold out quickly. That is the retailer’s statement, not an independently audited sales report. The 2018 colors are later collaboration variants, not the original 2017 references.
How to compare a listing with the watch you want
- Match the reference. SCXP051 is the 33 mm white-dial 2017 model; SCXP041 is its 37.5 mm counterpart. SCXP071 and SCXP061 are the 33 mm and 37.5 mm black-dial Nano Universe exclusives. The 2018 models have different references.
- Separate the original from the reissue. A listing for Jobs’s vintage Chariot is not a listing for a 2017 or 2018 collaboration watch. Auction history for the original should not be used as a direct price comparison for a reissue.
- Check what is included and the condition. Compare the watch’s condition, whether the box and documentation are present, the seller’s reputation and return terms. The launch announcement says the 2017 models included a Nano Universe box, but a used listing may not.
- Read the details, not just the headline. Confirm the case size, dial and reference against the seller’s photos and description. The available specifications do not establish a complete authentication procedure, so ask a qualified watch professional if authenticity is uncertain.
What do the prices tell you?
The vintage original’s reported $42,500 auction result and current asking prices for collaboration models concern different watches. For one limited reference, WatchCharts displayed a pre-owned estimate of $748 for SCXP051 as of October 5, 2026, alongside four reported sales in the preceding year. That is a time-sensitive estimate based on a small stated sales volume, not a firm market-wide valuation or a price for Jobs’s vintage watch. Because these are discontinued limited releases, availability and condition depend on the individual listing. Compare like with like: the precise reference, condition and included items matter more than the “Steve Jobs” label alone.
