The Seiko Presage Shippo Enamel SPB073J1 and SPB075J1 are two limited-edition watches introduced at Baselworld 2018. Both pair a 40 mm-class steel case with a glossy, hand-finished Shippo enamel dial made by Ando Cloisonne in Nagoya. The choice is mainly between the SPB075’s cleaner date display and the SPB073’s added calendar and power-reserve indications. Seiko lists 2,500 pieces of each reference; the prices below are historical launch prices, not current market quotes.

What is different about the SPB073 and SPB075?
SPB075J1: the simpler dial and longer reserve
The SPB075 keeps the display straightforward: central hours, minutes and seconds, plus a date. Its 6R15 movement is listed at 3 Hz, and its reported 50-hour power reserve is five hours longer than the SPB073’s. At 40 mm, it is also 0.6 mm smaller in diameter. It is the more restrained option if you want the enamel dial to remain the main visual focus.
SPB073J1: more information on the dial
The SPB073 adds a calendar subdial and a power-reserve indicator, powered by the 6R27 automatic calibre. The extra indications make its dial busier, and its 40.6 mm case is slightly larger. Its listed reserve is 45 hours. The 2018 launch price was EUR 200 higher than the SPB075’s.

What makes Shippo enamel distinctive?
Shippo enamel is a Japanese form of cloisonne enamel. Seiko says the craft developed in Japan in the 17th century and distinguishes Shippo from porcelain enamel by its transparency and the polishing performed after firing. The result is a glossy dial surface with depth, rather than a flat printed finish.
Seiko identifies Ando Cloisonne, a Nagoya specialist with more than a century of experience, as the dial maker. According to Seiko, craftsman Wataru Totani hand-paints the glaze, the painting and firing process is repeated, and the dial is fired at 800°C before polishing reveals the pattern. Seiko also says the glaze is lead-free and was developed to meet its safety and ecological requirements and the EU RoHS directive. These production and compliance details are Seiko’s descriptions of its process.

- Choose the SPB075J1 if you prefer a cleaner, date-only layout, a slightly smaller case and the longer listed reserve.
- Choose the SPB073J1 if you value a calendar subdial and a power-reserve display, and prefer the more information-dense dial.
In either case, the defining feature is the enamel work rather than a complicated movement specification. No hands-on assessment or independent enamel testing is established here, so the comparison is based on the published specifications and Seiko’s account of how the dials are made.
