The Seiko Prospex 1959 Alpinist Modern Re-interpretation collection comprises three models: SPB241, SPB243 and SPB245. All three share a 38 mm stainless-steel case, Seiko’s Caliber 6R35 automatic movement with a stated 70-hour power reserve, and 20 bar water resistance. The main distinction is configuration: SPB241 and SPB243 come on stainless-steel bracelets, while SPB245 has a green dial and horse strap.

What the 1959 Alpinist Modern Re-interpretation is

Seiko introduced its first Alpinist, the Laurel Alpinist, in 1959 for mountain climbers and recreational field-sports enthusiasts. The SPB241, SPB243 and SPB245 are 2021 designs inspired by that watch, rather than exact reproductions. Seiko’s global collection description says the original’s mountain-shaped markers at 3, 6, 9 and 12 o’clock represented the four main compass points. The modern models echo the distinctive marker design, with large indexes and luminous hands and indexes.

Seiko describes the silver bases beneath the markers as creating a multi-dimensional effect. The curved sapphire crystal has an inner anti-reflective coating and is described by Seiko as scratch resistant; Lumibrite is applied to all three hands and the indexes.

Movement, dimensions and water resistance

Caliber 6R35 and power reserve

Each model uses Seiko’s Caliber 6R35 automatic movement. Seiko stated a 70-hour power reserve for the caliber in its 2021 launch material. That figure is the manufacturer’s specification, not an independent measurement.

Case and crystal

All three models have a stainless-steel case measuring 38.0 mm in diameter and 12.9 mm thick. The curved sapphire crystal has an inner anti-reflective coating, and the case back is a see-through screw-down type.

Water and magnetic resistance

Seiko lists 20 bar water resistance and 4,800 A/m magnetic resistance for the three models. These are the manufacturer’s stated specifications; the 20-bar rating should not be confused with a claim that any specific activity or depth is suitable without regard to the watch’s condition and care.

Do not confuse the SPB models with the SJE085

The SJE085 is a separate limited-edition product titled the “1959 Alpinist Re-creation.” SPB241, SPB243 and SPB245 carry the “1959 Alpinist Modern Re-interpretation” name. The SJE085 has different specifications, including Caliber 6L35, a stated 45-hour power reserve, a 36.6 mm case and 10 bar water resistance; those details do not describe the SPB models.

What the launch information can—and cannot—tell you

Seiko’s 2021 release establishes the collection’s model names, launch configurations and stated specifications, as well as approximate US launch prices. It does not confirm what is currently in production or available, or what a retailer charges today. When evaluating a listing, check that the reference is the exact SPB model you intend to buy and that the dial and bracelet or strap match the listing’s description.
