There is no objective “best” enamel dial among anOrdain, Voutilainen, Vacheron Constantin, and Seiko Presage: each maker offers a different mix of color, surface, decoration, and watch design. This is a personal-favorites question, not a quality ranking. The useful comparison is what kind of dial—and level of watchmaking—you want.
What makes an enamel dial different?
Enamel is glass fused to a metal base. The result can have a smooth, glassy surface, but “enamel” does not name one uniform technique or appearance. Makers can vary the pigments, layers, firing approach, and decoration, so a plain white dial and a translucent fumé dial are not directly comparable on a single scale.
Vacheron Constantin describes using finely ground glass mixed with oxide pigments, applied to metal and fired under controlled conditions. Its documented techniques include Grand Feu, cloisonné, and champlevé; these names refer to distinct approaches, not interchangeable labels. Vacheron Constantin’s enamelling overview explains the craft.
How the four makers differ
| Maker | Documented dial approach | What to look for |
|---|---|---|
| anOrdain | Vitreous enamel, including opaque and fumé approaches. For fumé, the maker describes transparent enamel over a domed silver base, with counter-enamelling to help reduce warping. | Color and gradient-like visual depth. The silver and enamel respond differently to heating and cooling, making cracking a challenge in the process. |
| Voutilainen | The 2021 feature discusses the 28E as an example of guilloché enameling; exact specifications and present-day availability are not established here. | Interest in enamel combined with guilloché decoration, rather than enamel as a plain field alone. |
| Vacheron Constantin | Officially documents Grand Feu, cloisonné, and champlevé enamel. | A range of enamel techniques within a broader decorative-arts vocabulary; assess the specific dial rather than assuming every model uses the same method. |
| Seiko Presage | Presage includes enamel-dial watches. Seiko identifies enamel craftsman Mitsuru Yokosawa and distinguishes enamel from urushi lacquer, Arita porcelain, and Shippo enamel. | A more accessible entry point to a watch with an enamel dial, with the exact design and craft varying by reference. |
What each choice may appeal to
anOrdain: color and fumé depth
anOrdain’s enamel collection is a natural place to look if you are drawn to colored dials and the layered appearance of fumé. Its own description calls vitreous enamel “Grand Feu” and defines it as glass fused to metal. The process account also makes clear why a vivid dial is not simply a painted surface: its fumé method uses transparent enamel on a domed silver base, and counter-enamelling helps address warping. anOrdain’s enamel page describes its approach. Collection and order information can change; the site’s current listings are the place to check for availability.

Voutilainen: enamel alongside guilloché
The 2021 feature points to Voutilainen’s 28E in its discussion of guilloché enameling. That makes it relevant to readers who value a dial where enamel is paired with engine-turned decoration. The available information here does not establish exact 28E specifications or whether it can currently be ordered, so treat it as an example from that feature rather than a current recommendation for a purchasable model.
Vacheron Constantin: several traditional techniques
Vacheron Constantin’s documented range includes Grand Feu, cloisonné, and champlevé. Those techniques offer different ways to build a dial’s surface and decoration; the name of the technique matters more than a general assumption that one is automatically better. Check the specific Métiers d’Art watch to see which technique it uses and how it shapes the design.

Seiko Presage: enamel in a broader craft collection
Seiko’s Presage line includes enamel-dial watches, and its craftsmanship materials name Mitsuru Yokosawa as an enamel craftsman. Seiko also presents enamel alongside distinct crafts such as urushi lacquer, Arita porcelain, and Shippo enamel, which should not be mistaken for the same dial material or process. Its Presage craftsmanship page introduces the crafts, while its Classic Series page discusses enamel dials.
Which enamel dial is best for you?
- Choose by appearance: decide whether you want a quiet, glossy field, a saturated color, a fumé effect, or a dial with visible decorative work.
- Look for the named technique: “enamel” alone does not tell you whether a dial is Grand Feu, cloisonné, champlevé, or another treatment.
- Compare the whole watch: dial craft is only one part of the choice; case, hands, proportions, and overall design determine whether the watch works for you.
- Set a realistic budget and check availability: these makers span very different watch categories, and current prices, stock, and regional lineups are not established by the dated feature or the craft descriptions.
What has changed since the 2021 favorites list?
The original Fratello feature, published September 6, 2021, presented these four names as the author’s personal favorites. It should be read as a snapshot of taste, not a current market survey. Seiko later announced three new Presage Craftsmanship Series creations on September 12, 2023, describing the enamel dial as central to their artistry; that launch announcement is dated context, not proof that those watches remain available. Seiko’s September 12, 2023 announcement records the launch.
