The Seiko Prospex SPB185J1 and SPB187J1 are closely related modern divers inspired by Seiko’s 1968 diver. Their core specifications are shared; the clearest difference is appearance: the SPB185J1 pairs a matte black dial with a brushed metallic bezel insert, while the SPB187J1 has a brushed blue dial and black bezel insert.
What’s the difference between the Seiko SPB185 and SPB187?
For these J1 references, the principal distinction is the dial and bezel treatment. Monochrome Watches describes the SPB185J1 as having a matte black dial and brushed metallic bezel insert, and the SPB187J1 as having a brushed blue dial and black bezel insert. Seiko’s Philippines Official Store likewise describes the SPB187J1 as a deep-blue-dial watch with a bold black unidirectional bezel. Monochrome Watches’ review and Seiko Philippines’ SPB187J1 listing support those descriptions.
| Feature | SPB185J1 | SPB187J1 |
|---|---|---|
| Dial and bezel appearance | Matte black dial; brushed metallic bezel insert (Monochrome Watches review, circa 2020) | Brushed blue or deep blue dial; black bezel insert (Monochrome Watches review, circa 2020; Seiko Philippines Official Store) |
| Case diameter | 42 mm (Monochrome Watches review, circa 2020; Seiko Brazil product listing) | 42 mm (Monochrome Watches review, circa 2020) |
| Case height | 12.5 mm (Monochrome Watches review, circa 2020) | 12.5 mm (Monochrome Watches review, circa 2020) |
| Movement | Automatic Seiko caliber 6R35 (Monochrome Watches review; Seiko Brazil product listing) | Automatic Seiko caliber 6R35 (Monochrome Watches review) |
| Water resistance | 200 m (Monochrome Watches review; Seiko Brazil product listing) | 200 m / 660 ft (Monochrome Watches review; Seiko Philippines Official Store) |
The sources do not establish a difference in their core specifications. The practical choice is therefore mostly visual: the SPB185J1 is the more monochrome option, while the SPB187J1 adds blue to the dial and keeps the bezel black.
Is the SPB187 just the blue version of the SPB185?
That is a useful shorthand for the most visible difference, but it is not a complete specification comparison. The SPB187J1 has a blue dial and black bezel insert; the SPB185J1 pairs a black dial with a brushed metallic insert. The reviewed pair otherwise share the listed 42 mm case, 12.5 mm height, sapphire crystal, screw-down crown, caliber 6R35 and 200 m rating. The available sources do not establish any further technical distinction between these exact references.

How big is the Seiko SPB185J1?
Monochrome Watches reports a 42 mm case diameter and 12.5 mm case height for both watches; Seiko Brazil’s SPB185J1 listing also specifies a 42 mm case width. Monochrome characterizes the case presence as imposing. These measurements and that reviewer’s impression offer a useful starting point, but case diameter alone cannot determine how a watch will fit a particular wrist.
What movement is in the Seiko SPB185J1 and SPB187J1?
Both use Seiko’s automatic caliber 6R35, according to Monochrome Watches. Seiko Brazil independently lists the 6R35 for the SPB185J1. The SPB185J1 product listing also specifies a date display and 24 jewels. The cited material does not provide a comparative accuracy test, so it cannot establish how these watches perform against one another in daily timekeeping.

How water resistant are the SPB185J1 and SPB187J1?
Both modern references are rated to 200 m. Seiko Brazil lists a 200 m diver rating for the SPB185J1, and Seiko Philippines gives the SPB187J1 a 200 m / 660 ft diver’s rating. The 300 m figure sometimes associated with this design lineage belongs to the historical 1968 Seiko diver, not these reinterpretations.
How the 1968 original relates to these modern divers
Seiko’s heritage page describes the original 1968 watch as a high-beat diver with 300 metres of water resistance, a one-piece case, screw-down crown and unidirectional rotating bezel. Seiko says it was created three years after the company’s first diver’s watch. That history explains the inspiration; it should not be mistaken for the SPB185J1 or SPB187J1’s specification. Seiko’s 1968 diver heritage page provides the historical context.
