What is the Seiko Prospex SPB439?
The SPB439J1 is part of Seiko’s Prospex 1968 Diver’s Re-interpretation GMT line and the Save the Ocean limited-edition series. Seiko lists production at 1,500 pieces. Its case back carries a limited-edition marking and an individual serial number. Seiko’s UK product page identifies the model as SPB439J1.
What does the Save the Ocean dial represent?
Seiko describes the dial as inspired by polar landscapes and seascapes. The official Middle East product page states: “The new creation’s textured dial captures the power of the polar glaciers that shape the landscapes and seascapes of the Arctic and Antarctic.” The striated dial is silvery white, with a light-blue 24-hour GMT hand. This is Seiko’s stated design inspiration.
How does the SPB439 GMT hand work?
The watch uses an additional 24-hour hand to display a second time zone alongside the regular hour hand. Seiko’s March 8, 2023 announcement explains the GMT display in those terms. The available specifications do not establish whether the watch should be classified as a caller or traveller GMT, so those labels are not useful for identifying its operation here.

What matters when comparing it with other diver GMT watches?
- Fit: Compare diameter, thickness and especially lug-to-lug span with watches you already find comfortable. The SPB439 is 42.0 mm across and 48.6 mm from lug to lug; its 20 mm lug width is a separate measurement relevant to strap sizing.
- Diving specification: Its stated rating is 200 m / 660 ft diver’s water resistance. Compare the rating and intended use, rather than treating water resistance alone as a complete measure of a watch’s suitability for diving.
- Movement: The 6R54’s listed reserve is approximately 72 hours, and Seiko gives its accuracy as +25 to −15 seconds per day. These are manufacturer figures; they are useful for a like-for-like specification comparison, not a guarantee of an individual watch’s observed performance.
- GMT use: The 24-hour hand provides a second-time-zone display. Compare how each model presents its second time zone, and check the maker’s documentation before relying on a more specific GMT-operation classification.
Launch date, availability and buying checks
Seiko Watch Corporation’s announcement, published March 8, 2023, scheduled the new mechanical diver GMT models for sale beginning June 9, 2023. That date records the planned launch; it does not establish current stock or today’s price. Seiko’s regional pages may show market-specific pricing, not a universal current transaction price.
If you are looking for the Seiko Prospex SPB439J1, confirm the exact reference, condition, regional variant, seller and current listing before buying. The available manufacturer specifications establish a 20 mm lug width but do not confirm compatibility with any particular replacement strap or part.
