The Seiko Rotocall re-editions are the choice for a smaller, lighter digital watch with a distinctive rotary bezel; the full-metal Casio G-Shock Square is the choice for shock-resistant construction, solar power, radio timekeeping and Bluetooth. The comparison is between Seiko SMGG17, SMGG19 and SMGG21 and the Casio GMW-B5000D family. The comparison article names the Casio GMW-B5000D-1C, while Casio’s US product page uses GMW-B5000D-1, so check the regional reference when shopping.

What is being compared?

Seiko’s 2026 Rotocall re-editions—SMGG17, SMGG19 and SMGG21—take their design cues from the brand’s 1982 Rotocall. Their defining feature is an octagonal rotary bezel that selects modes. The Casio is a full-metal member of the G-Shock Square 5000 line: a modern digital watch with a conventional multi-button interface and connected timekeeping features. These are different takes on a steel digital watch, not interchangeable versions of the same idea.

“Steel Square” can also describe a resin G-Shock 5600 with a steel bezel. That is not the Casio configuration compared here: Casio distinguishes the 5000 line’s stainless-steel case from the 5600 line’s resin case, although some 5600 models have steel bezels. Casio’s 5600/5000 series guide explains the distinction.

How do their size and materials compare?

The Seiko is notably more compact and lighter on the published specifications. The figures below are manufacturer specifications; Seiko’s dimensions and weight are for SMGG21, while Casio’s are for GMW-B5000D-1.

Specification Seiko Rotocall SMGG21 Casio GMW-B5000D-1
Case dimensions 37.0 mm diameter; 43.5 mm lug-to-lug; 10.6 mm thick 49.3 × 43.2 × 13 mm
Weight 107 g 167 g
Case and bracelet Stainless-steel case Stainless-steel case and bezel; solid stainless-steel band with one-touch three-fold clasp
Crystal Hardlex Mineral glass
Water and impact protection 10 bar water resistance; no G-Shock-style shock rating is stated in the cited Seiko specifications 200 m water resistance and shock resistance

Sources: Seiko’s SMGG21 specifications and Casio’s international GMW-B5000D-1 specifications. The case shapes differ, so the dimensions do not describe how much wrist area each watch covers in exactly the same way. The published weight nevertheless makes the trade-off clear: the full-metal Casio is 60 g heavier than the cited Seiko.

What do you get for timekeeping and power?

The Seiko uses quartz caliber A824, with manufacturer-listed accuracy of ±20 seconds per month and an approximately three-year battery life. Its feature set is self-contained: the watch does not rely on a phone connection or radio signal for the functions listed below.

  • 100-hour chronograph with 1/100-second increments
  • Timer to 100 minutes, adjustable in one-minute increments
  • Single-time alarm, dual time and counter
  • Full auto calendar through December 31, 2074
  • Battery warning and internal LED illumination

Casio lists Tough Solar charging, Multiband 6 radio timekeeping and Bluetooth smartphone linking for time adjustment. These are practical advantages if you want the watch to recharge from light and correct its time through radio reception or a paired phone. The cited Casio specification does not provide a battery-life figure to compare directly with Seiko’s approximately three-year estimate. Casio also describes fine-resin cushioning components between the full-metal case and bezel as part of the construction. Casio’s product specification details these features.

How do they feel to use?

Seiko: choose a mode with the bezel

The Rotocall’s rotary bezel is more than a visual callback: it acts as a mode switch. That gives the watch a distinctive, tactile way to move among its digital functions. Choose it if the compact proportions and unusual interaction are central to the appeal, rather than simply wanting the broadest feature list.

Casio: prioritize protection and connected time

The GMW-B5000D combines the Square silhouette with a metal case and bracelet, shock resistance, solar charging, radio correction and Bluetooth adjustment. Its extra weight is a real consideration for anyone who prefers a lighter watch. In Casio’s promotional wording, the Square offers “industry-leading shock resistance and 200-meter water resistance”; that is the manufacturer’s description, not an independent comparative test. Casio’s Square series guide provides the statement and feature overview.

Which one should you choose?

  • Choose the Seiko Rotocall if you want a comparatively compact, lighter steel digital watch, retro styling, and the rotary bezel’s mode-selection operation.
  • Choose the full-metal Casio Square if shock resistance, 200 m water resistance, solar charging, radio time correction or Bluetooth adjustment matter more than lower weight.
  • Consider how you wear steel watches. The Casio’s 167 g listed weight may feel substantial; the Seiko SMGG21 is listed at 107 g. These are specifications, not a controlled wrist-comfort test.

The February 8, 2026 Fratello comparison captures the divide as a choice between “retro heritage or modern and rugged design.” Its writers’ preferences are subjective: Daan favors the smaller Rotocall and says steel G-Shocks feel too heavy for his use, while Thomas prefers Casio’s feature set and protective concept. Those opinions are useful context, not universal fit or durability findings.

What do they cost, and which reference should you check?

Seiko USA lists SMGG17, SMGG19 and SMGG21 at $550 each, with an April 2026 release. Those are US-market launch details, not a universal or necessarily current price. The Fratello article reported UK prices of £550 for each Seiko and £499 for the GMW-B5000D-1C when it was published on February 8, 2026. A Casio UK listing surfaced at £489, but prices and listing status can change; check the seller and regional model reference before buying. The Fratello figures are dated article context, not current quotes.

For product details, see Seiko USA’s Rotocall announcement and the SMGG21 product page. Casio’s international specification page is for GMW-B5000D-1; regional suffixes such as -1C may differ, so confirm that a listing matches the version you intend to purchase.
