The Seiko SBBN011 is identified by specialist watch publication Fratello as the original “Darth Tuna”: an all-black version of Seiko’s Professional Tuna saturation-diver watch, introduced in 2005. Fratello reports a 1,000-meter depth rating, a 7C46 quartz movement, a ceramic shroud and a black-coated titanium inner case. Those model-specific details come from Fratello, while Seiko’s official history documents the earlier engineering that shaped the Tuna family.
What is the Seiko SBBN011?
The SBBN011 is a professional saturation-diver watch in Seiko’s Tuna family. “Darth Tuna” is a collector nickname for the family’s all-black execution, not an official model name. Fratello calls the SBBN011 the original and first Darth Tuna and dates its introduction to 2005, three decades after Seiko’s first Tuna.
Fratello identifies the case reference as 7C46-0AA0. The watch pairs the Tuna’s protective, substantial case design with a dark treatment that distinguishes it from earlier professional models. Its reported 1,000 m depth rating and 7C46 quartz caliber are model specifications reported by Fratello, not details established on the Seiko history pages cited below.
How the SBBN011 fits the Tuna lineage
Seiko traces its professional diver lineage to a 1975 600 m watch developed after a saturation diver reported that ordinary watches could not withstand helium-mixture diving conditions. Seiko says that predecessor used a one-piece titanium case, an outer protector and a specially developed L-shaped gasket intended to resist helium penetration without a helium escape valve. The distinctive shape helped inspire the “Tuna” nickname, according to Seiko.

This history explains the family’s design rationale; it should not be read as a complete specification for the SBBN011. The model’s particular materials, crystal and other details below are reported by Fratello, a specialist secondary publication.
What distinguishes the SBBN011’s design?
Fratello describes the SBBN011 as the third major update of Seiko’s Professional Saturation Diver line. Its key difference is not simply a black dial: the dark finish extends across major case and bezel components, while the model also introduced construction and hardware changes within the professional Tuna line.

- Black-coated inner case: Fratello reports a titanium inner case with black DLC coating, replacing the gold-colored TiN coating used on the earlier execution.
- Black-treated bezel: The bezel is steel with a black treatment, according to Fratello.
- Ceramic shroud: Fratello identifies the all-ceramic shroud as a first for a professional saturation Tuna.
- Sapphire crystal: The crystal is sapphire with an internal anti-reflective coating; Fratello describes this as a first for this lineage.
- Black hexagonal bolts: The shroud is fastened with black hexagonal bolts rather than the Phillips screws used on earlier versions, according to Fratello.
Together, these details make the SBBN011 a specific design generation, rather than a generic label for every black Tuna or every later watch called a Darth Tuna by collectors.

How the SBBN011 differs from later Darth Tuna references
Later references retained the broad all-black Tuna idea but changed details. Fratello reports that the SBBN013 followed the SBBN011 in 2009, retaining the 7C46-0AA0 reference while moving the Marine Master inscription from the caseback to the dial and adding a signed crown.
For the 2015 SBBD025, Fratello reports the same quartz movement and case dimensions as the SBBN011, along with a ceramic shroud and black-coated titanium monocoque case, but a different handset. These are descriptions from that article, not an exhaustive independent side-by-side inspection.

Because the nickname applies to an all-black family of watches and later generations differ in their details, use the reference rather than appearance alone when identifying one. For a potential purchase, confirm that the watch is represented as SBBN011, and compare its condition, service history, completeness and seller documentation.
